Protect. Obey. Sacrifice.
These
words are the mantra of my existence. I’m not sure if it’s TitusRogen
inspiring my desire to go against what I am or my own DNA deviating. All
I can think is how Titus will look when he meets his end. It trumps
even my wish for freedom. In this moment, I want nothing more than to
watch the life bleed from Titus’s body. And I want it at my own hands.
Titus. The Creator.
I
stare at my palms. Strength aside, I wonder if I’m capable of taking a
life. A human life; one with a soul. And I wonder if that isn’t easier
than taking the life of an Imitation. At least humans have souls that
live on. What do I have after this? Where will I go? Back into a
syringe? Will Titus recycle me? Or will I be lost forever down a lab
drain?
We don’t deserve that.
We don’t deserve him.
Deserving
and receiving are so very different here. And I am beginning to
understand, to beat someone in this world, I‘ll have to play in it.

Review:
Deviation is the second instalment in Heather Hildenbrand’s alluring Clone Chronicles series and continues where the first novel left off; once more taking readers into the heart of Rowgen Tower and seeing our heroine Ven continue to fight for her freedom and that of the Imitations.
I will be honest here; I’m a Heather Hildenbrand fan. Every single one of her books have managed to capture my attention and entertain me from the get go, and this series is no exception. Imitation blew me away, and I enjoyed Deviation almost just as much. As a sequel, Deviation continued to develop the overall storyline, but also entailed plenty of action, romance and high-stakes. Hildenbrand has written the story well and continues making small revelations and developments that shape the story.
Personally, I loved the characters as much in this book as I did the last. Our main character Ven continues to be a fantastic voice to follow and continues to grow in this book. As an imitation, a clone whose purpose is to serve their authentic, Ven started out having very little self worth, something she only began to find during the events of Imitation. In Deviation, as Ven acknowledges her own feelings and importance we see a young woman who is supposedly a clone of another develop her own personality, drives and desires. Ven is experiencing so many things for the first time and learning her capacity to love.
Hildenbrand continues to have me all squishy inside with Ven and the relationships she shares with the other characters. The relationship between Ven and Linc is a favourite, for obvious reasons, but I also think the friendship between Ven and Obadiah is great inclusion to the story. He and Ven have a very cute dynamic that is enjoyable to read.
Continuing on where the first book left off, Deviation sees Ven and her friends struggling to protect and hide the imitations they managed to help escape in the first book, and expectedly features a lot of tension and desperation. No one, especially Ven, knows what Titus Rowen is going to do next and there’s a lot of danger lingering within the pages of this novel, but also a lot of friendship and romance two.
Heather Hildenbrand has written a very beautiful romance between Ven and Linc in this series and I absolutely adore any scene where these two feature together. They have a great chemistry and Deviation sees the two of them as strong together as ever before. I love the way they fit so well and the ferice dedication Linc has to Ven. He started out as a guard in Rowen Tower but since meeting and falling for Ven, he has become very dedicated to protecting her, and always puts her first. These two are a fantastic pairing and I can only hope things continue to run smoothly with their relationship.
Overall Deviation is a great follow up to its predecessor and I’m very much looking forward to the next book. With some interesting twists revealed in this book and another layer of mystery surrounding the goings on around Ven, I can’t wait until the release of the next instalment!
