Book Shelf: Winter (Evermore Academy #1) by Audrey Grey

Welcome to Evermore Academy where the magic is dark, the immortals are beautiful, and being human SUCKS.

After spending my entire life avoiding the creatures that murdered my parents, one stupid mistake binds me to them for four years.

My penance? Become a human shadow at the infamous Evermore Academy, finishing school for the Seelie and Unseelie Fae courts.

All I want is to keep a low profile, but day one, I make an enemy of the most powerful Fae in the academy.

The Winter Prince is arrogant, cruel, and apparently also my Fae keeper. Meaning I’m in for months of torture.

But it only gets worse. Something dark and terrible looms over the academy. Humans are dying, ancient vendettas are resurfacing, and the courts are more bloodthirsty than ever.

What can one mortal girl do in a world full of gorgeous monsters?

Fight back with everything I have—and try not to fall in love in the process.

Review:

Winter is the first novel in Audrey Grey’s new series Evermore Academy and is an absolutely sensational novel infused with passion, adventure and blossoming romance. The Cruel Prince meets Vampire Academy with a fabulous heroine and a swoon worthy love interest!

Summer Solstice lives in a world where she and those she loves struggle to put food on the table. It’s a stark difference to the opulent and luscious world of the Fae that mirrors the human one. Summer never expects to set foot in the land of the fae until one mistake sees her marked by the infamous Winter Prince for theft. The punishment for her crime? Drafted to Evermore Academy where humans are taught and trained to become shadows—the human protectors of the fae. What’s worse is that Summer’s fae keeper is none other than the cruel, arrogant and infuriating Winter Prince himself. Summer is sure she’s in for months of torture as the Prince’s shadow but what started out as punishment soon becomes something positive for Summer. If only she could figure out the Prince, who is caring one moment and cold the next. As something dark and dangerous looms over the academy, humans begin to die and Summer realises that the dangers within the academy are more than she first anticipated....including the danger of falling in love with a maddening fae prince who is all kinds of forbidden.

I absolutely LOVE Audrey Grey’s books—I’ve read every single one and have adored them all. So it’s saying something that I think the first instalment in the Evermore Academy series Winter is quite possibly her novel yet! Perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince and A Court of Thorns and Roses, Winter introduces readers to an intoxicating and beautifully written world of fae. Winter blends all the addictive elements of a great paranormal novel—action, danger, humour, romance—in an academy setting that is highly addictive.

The protagonist is Summer, a human girl is finds herself stepping into a whole new world when she is forced to attend Evermore Academy as penance for stealing from one of the fae. Summer was an awesome main character to follow! She’s intelligent and competent but also kind and noble. She genuinely cares about others and is willing to do the right thing at a risk to herself. I adored following her in this novel and seeing her stand up for herself against mean girls, cruel fae and infuriating princes. This is one heroine who just ticks all the boxes from the get go.

The world building within Winter is really enjoyable. I’m loving Audrey Grey’s take on the fae that explores an almost dystopian human world alongside a thriving, magical world of fae. The juxtaposition was enthralling and made for plenty of growth in our main character as she learnt of the fae history during her time at Evermore Academy. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the fae history and the darkling monsters in the rest of the series—-I can’t wait to see how Grey develops everything.

Summer’s love interest in this novel is the sexy Winter Prince, an intriguing and mysterious individual who is swoon-worthy and infuriating and deeply enigmatic. The Winter Prince and his motivations are very much a mystery during this novel. The chemistry between he and Summer is undeniable even as Audrey Grey keeps readers guessing as to the reasons behind many of his actions. The fire and electricity between Summer and the Winter Prince is magnetic and so addictive to read about—I devoured all the banter and bite between them and couldn’t help but want more each time.

Winter is a fantastically told academy tale. Academy novels have become all the range recently but it’s easy for authors to loose their storyline within the typical school setting. This is definitely NOT the case with Winter; quite possibly the best academy novel I’ve ever read as Audrey Grey infuses the story with fae mythology, tangible characters and a promising storyline.

As this instalment in the series comes to a close, I can’t wait to see what Audrey Grey has next for Summer and her Winter Prince in the next novel and second year of her attendance at Evermore Academy. Can’t wait to see what the feisty Summer gets up to next!

Book Shelf: Styx & Stones by Carmen Jenner

A heartbreaking mature YA novel from the author of the bestselling contemporary romance, Harley & Rose.

Cancer sucks … and then you die.

Alaska Stone is everything I've ever dreamed of.

For years, I’ve watched her in the halls, wanted her, but she never knew I existed.

Not until she walked into my chemo session.

For me, it was love at first sight.

For her? It might take a little longer.

But hey, it’s not like we’re on a deadline or anything.

Review:

Styx & Stones is a heartfelt and poignant YA read from bestselling author Carmen Jenner that will bewitch readers with its moving and emotional storyline and tangible, genuine characters.

Seventeen year old Styx Hendricks thinks cancer sucks and why shouldn’t he? He beat it once and now its come back worse then ever. Chemo makes him weak and sick and Styx is so over putting poison in his body. There’s nothing in life to be positive about….until Alaska Stone walks into his chemo session. Alaska has always been Styx’s dream girl and it seems like a cruel twist of fate that she’s finally noticing him when things seem so grim but Styx is determined to prove to Alaska that there are things more important than dying, and living—and loving—is the most important of them all.

I knew heading into this novel that Carmen Jenner was going to break my heart. How could she not? Anyone who has read Harley & Rose knew how Styx’s story was going to end. There wouldn’t be a “happy ending” for this lovable dork, but Jenner surprised me by the amount of wonder, sweetness and joy she packed into this novel—Styx & Stones is a story about true love, exploration and living in the moments you have, especially when your future isn’t guaranteed. And I think it was absolutely beautiful.

Styx & Stones unfolds through the dual perspectives of main characters Styx Hendricks and Alaska Stone, switching back and forth between them throughout the novel. Both Styx and Alaska have sharp, distinct voices and Carmen Jenner explores a tough topic—kids with cancer—in a very respectful, genuine but entertaining way. This story is actually really fun. Until the final few chapters, it’s often easy to forget how dire our protagonists situations are as they spend time together.

Styx and Alaska are adorable and awkward and just honestly normal teenagers facing the biggest fights of their lives. They’re also falling in love; in the middle of all the pain and uncertainty and fear they’re facing, they slowly find unexpected friendship and love with each other. It’s really sweet seeing them stumble through their feelings and I feel like Jenner did this so perfectly. There’s an innocence to their romance as they experience physicality with each other and tenderness as they fall in love. It’s heartbreaking knowing their time together will be short, but uplifting too as at least they have experienced love during what little time they have.

I’ll try not to give away too many spoilers, but there were aspects of this novel I really wasn’t expecting; both good and bad. I was expecting to have Styx break my heart, but Alaska was unexpected and given how much I came to love these two quirky teens, seeing their pain was heartbreaking and emotional and gut wrenching….BUT the very ending of Styx & Stones is also very hopeful so I will forgive Carmen Jenner for the emotional roller-coaster she took me on.

Beautifully written, thoughtful and moving, Styx & Stones is a powerfully told novel that allows readers to experience a whole spectrum of emotion as Carmen Jenner proves that she can write anything---adult, NA and now YA-- and knows how to get the most out of her readers with Styx & Stones that in my opinion deserves to right up there with The Fault in Our Stars and A Walk To remember as one of those timely, spectacular stories.

Review:

Curse Breaker is the second novel in Audrey Grey’s Kingdom of Runes series and is another tantalising instalment that picks up where its predecessor left off and draws readers into an enchanting world of fantasy, passion and danger at every turn.

Haven Ashwood survived the Devourers but she still has a lot to do if she wants to break the curse that threatens the realm. As her forbidden magic continues to grow, Haven travels alongside Sun Lord Acheron and his band of Solis in an effort to secure the ingredients they need to break the curse. By day her time is spent with the infuriating Sun Lord and by night her dreams are invaded by the darkly charismatic Shade Lord Stolas. Both Sun and Shade Lords are off limits, but undeniablily call to Haven and are the key to either her salvation or destruction. As the Shade Queen closes in on Haven’s best friend Bellamy, breaking the curse and saving Bell are more important than ever, but will Haven’s growing magic help her prevent darkness from overpowering the land or be the thing that brings her to her knees?

After stealing my heart with the first novel Oath Taker, I was ready to jump straight into Curse Breaker as soon as I was able to and I can’t say I was disappointed in any way. I’ve always enjoyed Audrey Grey’s novels—and I’ve read all of them to date—but I was especially excited to read Curse Breaker because I have no doubt this series is going to be something special given how wonderfully it has been depicted and constructed so far.

Flawlessly written, Curse Breaker is a superb second instalment in this fantasy series by Audrey Grey that is perfect for Sarah J. Maas fans. Beautifully detailed and explored, Curse Breaker offers readers another thrilling and adventurous story that features all the best elements of a well written and cultivated fantasy tale. The storyline remains endlessly exciting with many breathtaking moments where readers will be on the edge of their seat.

Grey continues to depict the novel in third person and through the perspectives of various characters, although Haven remains our main focal point and the main protagonist of the series. I really love all the characters within the series and feel they have fantastic chemistry together. They’re all complex and enigmatic and very compelling. I feel like they’ve been fleshed out really well and compliment the story wonderfully.

The world building Audrey Grey implores is spot on with the realm full of dangerous creatures, supernatural elements and magic. It’s deadly and dangerous this world Haven inhabits with creatures and magic of light and dark at war with one another. I feel like Grey has put a lot of thought into detail to bring the world to life. There’s also an aura of Beauty and the Beast interwoven into Curse Breaker with Bell’s tale and his experiences with the creature that currently holds him hostage reminiscent of the famous fairy-tale. I actually thought this gender swap concept was quite smart, even if it does make me draw comparisons to Sarah J. Maas novels more than I would like.

Curse Breaker is full of action and danger but also features moments of friendship and romance. There are sexual themes and I anticipate more of a New Adult vibe to feature within the series than a Young Adult as there is a sexual undertone to some of the circumstances.

I’m highly enjoying the romance between Haven and Acheron but while I do also very much like Stolas, I don’t quite think my heart can handle a love-triangle between those three. That being said despite a few developments at the end of the novel, I do fear that is the direction the series is heading and aren’t looking forward it regardless of how much I love both male leads. No doubt we'll see Stolas again in the future to continue this line of development.

Fantastic reading with an edge of your ending that includes moments of heartbreak and excitement, I for one can’t wait to see what Audrey Grey does next as this series is simply brilliant and seems to be getting better and better with each instalment—bring on book three!

Book Shelf: A Bite at the Cherry (Blackburn Academy #1) by Rita Stradling

Three things about Justin Roberts:
1. He’s a bully.
2. Our relationship is toxic.
3. He’s the only one who knows my secret.

A year ago, I woke in the morgue with a note in my hand telling me that I’m a vampire. I need blood or I’ll start killing people. Lucky for me, Justin has been sneaking into my bedroom and feeding me blood for a year, and the only price I have to pay for it is putting up with his cruel snipes and my unwanted feelings for him.

I just can’t figure out why he keeps coming back.

But all that changes when I’m offered a full-ride scholarship to Justin’s mysterious school, the elite Blackburn Academy, where I might finally learn about vampires. About myself. All I have to do is pass the grueling entrance trials, and the scholarship will be mine. Problem is, Justin doesn’t want me anywhere near his elite school and rich friends. He’s vowed to sabotage me.

Justin may have been feeding me blood for a year, but he doesn’t know who he’s up against.

But, Blackburn Academy is more than it seems. I’ll be facing more than what Justin Roberts alone can dish out.

Will competing in the trials be the new beginning I’m hoping for, or will it end my undead existence?

Review:

A Bite at the Cherry is Rita Stradling’s latest release and is a thrilling and enjoying vampiric tale woven with mystery and sizzling romantic tension.

A year ago, seventeen year old January Moore’s life changed forever when she woke in a morgue with a note telling her she was now a vampire. Following the instructions in the note, January found her way to Justin Roberts, a fellow teenager who agrees to supply her with blood in exchange for two things; she doesn’t ask questions and they tell no one of their weekly encounters. Now January’s grandmother has just taken a cleaning job on Justin’s side of town and January finds herself in close proximity to the boy she both loathes and can’t get enough of. Offered a scholarship to Justin’s mysterious high school, the elite Blackburn Academy, January soon begins to realise that Justin has his own secrets and they may just be the biggest threat January has experienced in her undead life yet….

I have to say I was quite impressed by A Bite at the Cherry. Though it is a “vampire” novel at it’s base, the elements of mystery and secrecy Rita Stradling weaves around January’s story gives the novel a thrilling and intriguing vibe. I won’t give too much away as part of the story's appeal is that you don’t exactly know what all the secrets are until the final few chapters, but readers will find themselves keen to discover the truth as January navigates her new life living on the Roberts estate.

As our protagonist, I quite liked January. Being a vampire is only a really small part of who she is as a character. As someone with an alcoholic mother, January has not lived a very easy life; she’s done it tough, but she never comes across as someone who feels sorry for herself or who wines about her position. January tends to make the most of things and I enjoyed this spunk about her. She wants a better life for herself and those she loves and she’s more than willing to work hard for it.

Readers will find themselves keen to piece the clues together as Rita Stradling details A Bite at the Cherry. It may come across that January blindly accepts certain circumstances too easily—namely that she’s a vampire---without further investigating too much, but this tends to bring more mystery to the story. It’s easy to get lost in January’s turbulent but sizzling relationship with Justin that is charged with desire on both ends as well as her blossoming friendships with other Blackburn Academy scholarship recipients. Teen drama and supernatural threats weave together effortlessly.

As the final few chapters of A Bite at the Cherry offer some long awaited answers, they also offer more than a few new questions and possibilities. Rita Stradling pulls a rabbit out of the hat with some revelations I wasn’t anticipating and leaves me raring to delve into the heart of Blackburn Academy and the Hawthorn Group alongside January. Bring on the next novel!

Review:

The Eternal Night is the fourth instalment in Rachel Morgan’s City of Wishes series and proves Morgan isn’t planning on slowing down anytime soon with this addictive, romantic and thrilling fairytale retelling.

Elle Winter is a human in a world of fae, vampires and magic. A slave to her fae stepmother, Elle was so close getting her freedom before everything began to go wrong. Now she has been kidnapped by a vampire and taken far away from the fae prince Dex she has found herself recently falling for and any hope of rescue. Unsure of his plans, Elle is surprised to soon discover that he may not be the enemy she thinks he is. Stuck in the Eternal Night, Elle will soon have to make [another] deal with the devil—AKA The Godmother—if she wants to save Dex and all those she loves from the vampire king whose plans for Elle will destroy everything she holds dear.

Rachel Morgan continues to please with The Eternal Night, another fast paced and deeply enjoyable read. After four instalments, I feel very committed to Elle, Dex and their friends as we follow them throughout the series. Well written to completely ensnare your attention, The Eternal Night offers readers some exciting new developments and some unexpected surprises for the characters.

Continuing to unfold through Elle and Dex’s perspective, The Eternal Night ramps up the romance aspect as Elle and Dex continue to explore the attraction that simmers between them in a sweet, thrilling and adorable way. I literally devour every moment where we see stolen kisses and touches and their feelings strengthening. Obviously most readers will know the love story within Cinderella, but that doesn’t make Elle and Dex’s romance any less enjoyable to witness unfold.

Addictive, exciting and so very good, The Eternal Night is another wonderful read from Rachel Morgan and leaves me ready to devour the next one as soon as it comes out!

Book Shelf: Sands of Eppla by Janeal Falor

Review:

Sands of Eppla is Janeal Falor’s latest release and is an enjoyable and magical fantasy tale that will ignite your senses with its passion, adventure and addictive storyline.

Cassandra lives in a world where people fall in love at first sight, but for Cassandra, finding love is an impossibility for she is blind. Facing a life without love, Cassandra lives in a world where being blind also makes her a criminal. Living alone in a small hut outside the closest village with only her trusty monkey Tewy for company, Cassandra is used to the solitude she experiances, until the day a mysterious stranger appears in her home. On the run from royal warriors, Nikon is injured and weak and Cassandra can’t help but be drawn to him. Despite knowing she faces slavery if she is discovered helping Nikon, Cassandra decides to trust the man who has become her friend and leave her home for the first time in years. Journeying to new villages is a wonderful experience, but with warriors on Nikon’s tail, staying ahead of them will take everything Cassandra has got.

I have to say I was very impressed with Janeal Falor’s ability to write and detail a story from the perspective of a character who is blind in Sands of Eppla. Though she hasn’t always been that way, protagonist Cassandra is completely without sight, yet Falor doesn’t let this stop her from bringing to life a thrilling and daring tale that is beautifully written and offers readers a tangible atmosphere, plenty of potential within the storyline and budding romance. I actually think it was really cleaver on Falors part and meant readers focused on other senses (touch, sound, feeling) as Cassandra utalizes all her other senses to detail her story.

As the main character, I did very much like Cassandra. Despite her lack of sight, she was quite capable and adapted well to her settings. Obviously, there were times her blindness left her at a disadvantage, but I felt Cassandra made up for it in other areas. I thought she was sweet but intelligent and I enjoyed that she took chances in Sands of Eppla. Cassandra had a very adorable friend in Tewy who is a cheeky but delightful monkey and who constantly brought a smile to my face.

Sands of Eppla details a world where society is divided into two classes, the odiosom; the general and overall population and the amant; the ruling class and those who have found love. The concept of people falling in love at first sight was very intriguing to me and I thought it was an interesting idea from Janeal Falor. The fact that those who find love are elevated in status is very fascinating and leaves me curious to see what effect Cassandra and Nikon's actions will have down the track.

Falor includes some romantic possibility in the story in the form of Nikon, but as Cassandra is blind, there is no danger of them "falling in love" at first sight, although the connection between them grows and remains a solid presence throughout the story. They're friends as of now, but there's no denying both would be open to more if the possibility of love is there. I'm hoping to see Falor explore what other options they have and if they can fall in love the good old fashion way; through mutual desire and affection.

Sands of Eppla takes place over many months and sees Cassandra, Nikon and Tewy journey a lot. Secrets are revealed and surprises abound and I for one and am super excited to see what happens next. Janeal Falor has me hooked once again and ready to see what she has planned for her characters in the next installment--more please!

Review:

The Midnight Masquerade is the third novel in the City of Wishes serial by Rachel Morgan and is another deeply addictive and bewitching tale that sweeps readers up into a fast paced and entertaining adventure.

Elle Winter was so close to having enough Essence to buy her freedom with a wish, but that disappeared in a puff of smoke the day her stepmother found her secret stash. Now Elle has no choice but to turn to the Godmother in order to obtain a wish; something she told herself she would never do. It’s well known that the Godmother’s prices are high but Elle never expected what she would have to do pay the price. It’s something Elle knows would change her forever should she follow through, so she’s made the decision to lie to the Godmother. But can she get away before the Godmother finds out? Or is Elle's chance at freedom over before it ever truly began?

Having breezed through the first two instalments, I was super excited to dive into The Midnight Masquerade and did so as soon as I was able. Rachel Morgan continues to write such a fun and engaging story which is effortless to read but really entertaining. I’m invested in Elle’s story and am keen to see her find happiness. Magical and entertaining, The Midnight Masquerade is fast paced like the first two novels and well rounded—there’s danger, romance, humour, excitement—all tied together nicely.

Certain revelations may not come as a surprise but I sure loved seeing them come to pass. Dex played a smaller role in this instalment than he did in the others, but he and Elle continue to be so endearing to witness. I’m enjoying the building romance and the mystery surrounding the vampires and their plans for the kingdom.

Satisfying and entertaining, The Midnight Masquerade was simply so much fun and ending on another cliffhanger has guaranteed I’ll be dying to get my hands on Rachel Morgan’s next instalment as soon as it comes out! Highly recommend!

Review:

Oath Taker is the first novel in Audrey Grey’s new Kingdom of Runes series and offers readers a bewitching and sweeping fantasy adventure that will delight fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo with its fast pace, death-defying danger and bold characters.

Having been saved from slavery by crown prince Bellamy of Penryth as a child, seventeen year old Haven Ashwood spends her days protecting and supporting the kind-hearted prince while secretly spending her nights hunting monsters just outside the castles walls. In a world where both light and dark magic exist, Haven remains an anomaly for her ability to wield both; her only friend the prince. Then Bell is kidnapped by the very monsters Haven hunts, and she finds herself determined to rescue him. Even if the cost means partnering with the arrogant Archeron Halfbane, a Sun Lord bound to the King of Penryth and a group of his fellow immortals. Journeying across the kingdom, Haven’s only hope at rescuing Bell lies in destroying the curse that hangs over Penryth, but to do so she must face a vicious Queen whose twisted magic is stronger than anything Haven has ever seen. Trusting Archeron isn’t an option, but as the only way to beat their shared foe, Haven will need to put her faith in the hands of someone capable of destroying her if she hopes to save the ones she loves…..

As someone who has read and adored all of Audrey Grey's novels to date, I was beyond stoked when I heard about her latest novel Oath Taker and as a fantasy lover I knew it sounded right up my alley. And boy was I right! In the vein of all the best fantasy novels, Oath Taker proved to be an exceptionally well plotted and detailed adventure that held my complete and utter attention from the very first page. Intertwining all the elements of a great fantasy---adventure, action, danger, magic, monsters, possible romance---Oath Taker brings to life a compelling and intriguing world in the form of Penryth, a land where humans exist alongside magic and creatures capable of wielding it with both kindness and cruelty.

Audrey Grey weaves together a really well rounded and paced story in Oath Taker. The world feels well structured and complete; nuanced and layered--it's clear Grey has put a lot of time and effort into constructing her world. Grey also implores a rich history to support her creation with a tangible backstory and mythology which includes the Noctis and Solis; two races of immortal beings who lives alongside and occasionally amongst the mortals of the world. I personally thought they were very intriguing races and am enjoying seeing them woven into the story which is darkly fairytale-like at times and reminiscent of some popular fantasy lore.

The protagonist of Oath Taker is Haven, a tough, capable and highly likable young woman who had a hard start in life and is guarded as a result. Haven doesn’t let a lot of people in and does not trust easily which has left her with only one person in her life she truly cares about; her best friend and the Crown Prince of Penryth Bellamy. Haven’s loyalty to Bellamy is unwavering and after he is kidnapped, she showcases her determination to find him constantly throughout the novel as she journeys with strangers in an effort to find him. I quite liked Haven. She intelligent and able and smart mouthed. This is a girl who knows how to take care of herself and I’m hoping she’ll find happiness throughout the series.

Alongside Haven is an interesting cast of characters, both human and immortal. Though primarily told through Haven’s perspective, Oath Taker also features chapters through the eyes of Archeron, Stolas and Bellamy. I genuinely enjoy the chemistry between Haven and Archeron and Haven and Stolas but am not liking the possibility of a love triangle. I foresee something similar to the Feyre/Tamlin/Rhysand love triangle Sarah J. Maas is famous for and am crossing my fingers this won’t be the case. Don’t get me wrong—I think both men are intriguing and promising characters but I really hate love triangles.

Swimming in magic and danger, Oath Taker is a lyrical and sweeping fantasy. Audrey Grey has set the base for what is sure to be a thrilling series and leaves this first instalment guaranteeing readers will be keeping their eyes peeled for more. I know I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel as soon as possible!

Review:

The Vampire Trap is the second instalment in the City of Wishes series by Rachel Morgan and is another fast paced and exciting adventure full of magic, danger and character connections.

Elle Winter is desperate for her freedom, so much so that she has agreed to be the bait while Dex and his friends attempt to track down a dangerous vampire faction in exchange for three vials of Essence each day. As she gets closer to her goal of having enough Essence for a wish, Elle must continue to keep her secret from Dex who appears to have more than enough secrets of his own. It’s simple; get her wish, gain her freedom…..but unfortunately for Elle nothing is ever simple when magic and fae are involved.

The Vampire Trap is another quick and effortless read that picks up not long after the first instalment left off and is filled with all the aspects I loved so much about the first novel. Rachel Morgan once again brings the City of Wishes series to life with a forward moving storyline that is sharp and entertaining as she offers her take on the classic Cinderella tale.

Heroine Elle continues to feature in each chapter with an occasional one thrown in through Dex’s perspective for good measure. Elle is sweet, likable and easy to follow and it’s impossible not to genuinely want the best outcome for her. Anyone who has read or seen a Cinderella tale will know the basic premise and timeline it follows but that doesn’t mean you wish any less for Elle to escape the clutches of her evil step family and find her “prince”.

Rachel Morgan’s vision of Elle’s journey is fraught with danger as she remains the target of a group of vampires who will stop at nothing to find her. There is a lot of questions and mystery surrounding why Elle is being hunted, why she has the ability to erase memories and who, and what, Dex is exactly. I’m really keen to see these questions explored and answered down the track and hope Rachel Morgan doesn’t make us wait too long for the next instalment.

The Vampire Trap truly is an easy story to find yourself lost in and one that I highly recommend for those who love fairy-tale retellings with magic and supernatural and full of likable characters and blossoming romance.

Review:

A Shifting of Stars is Kathy Kimbray’s debut novel and is a vivid fantasy novel that will appeal to fans of Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo and Maria V. Snyder.

Seventeen year old Meadow Sircha has never been the same after she watched her mother die from an illness the emperor could have cured had he imported the medicine that would have saved her. Her grief has overwhelmed her in the year since, and the knowledge that the emperor spends vast amounts of money on violent gladiator tournaments while his people live in squalor eats at her. Which is why she decides to speak out at a secret gathering of those who oppose the emperors rule, but when she is caught and imprisoned by the emperors soldiers, Meadow quickly finds herself drawn into the danger she only ever wanted to stay out of. Alongside a mysterious and secretive young man, Meadow journeys across the kingdom and discovers a secret that could not only change the very course of the emperors rule but Meadow’s very own destiny….

Offering readers a vivid and lush world, A Shifting of Stars was an enjoyable and solid fantasy novel, kicking off what I’m hoping will be an interesting series. Though the novel began somewhat slow for me personally, I felt like A Shifting of Stars got better and better as the novel progressed. Author Kathy Kimbray steadily developed the plot well and utilised all the best elements of the fantasy genre; detailing an eventful story of danger and ones love of family, amidst a world where the majority of the population prizes brutal and barbaric fights to the death.

A Shifting of Stars unfolds through the eyes of seventeen year old Meadow, a simple village girl who finds herself fighting for her freedom when she is caught speaking out against the emperor. The vast majority of Meadow’s actions stem from her desire to save her father and prevent him from being punished for her actions. I found it refreshing that Meadow wasn’t setting out to save the world. The novel wasn’t about her epic battle against a tyrannous ruler—although as the story progressed she begins to care more for the plight of the people and this does somewhat become a concern—however Meadow honestly does just want to find and rescue her father.

In the beginning of the novel there seems to be an overload of characters introduced and readers will be forgiven for getting names mixed up, however the purpose and role of these numerous individuals does become apparent as the novel progresses, especially in the final few chapters. A few unforeseen twists will keep readers on their toes with more than a few developments largely unexpected that will impact future storylines.

Kathy Kimbray had me biting my nails the last few chapters as Meadow and her traveling companion Vogel found their lives on the line. A Shifting of Stars entertained me until the end and left me very keen to see what happens in the next chapter of Meadow’s story now that she finds herself in a position to change the kingdom for the better.

Review:

Torian is the third novel in the Hunting Her series and is without a doubt Eden Summer’s best book yet! Darkly thrilling, evocative and passionate, Torian is a captivating novel of danger, revenge and romance built in a world where crime and family go hand in hand with startling consequences….

Cole Torian is the ruling head of an infamous crime family, whose reputation for being a brutal, calculated killer is well known. Keeping his control is important to Cole but there’s one thing more important; family. And Cole is determined to protect his…even if it means playing a dangerous game with member of the police force. FBI Special Agent Anissa Fox is a cold hearted SOB, or so she’s been told. The daughter of a disgraced agent, Anissa has fought tooth and nail for her position, and has finally been able to arrest the patriarch of the Torian family for sex trafficking and enslavement. It should be her crowning achievement, but Nissa is tormented by thoughts of the Torian prodigal son, Cole, a man she despises and wants to see behind bars with his father. Then the unexpected happens and Nissa finds herself facing a deal with the devil; help Cole and he’ll give her the one thing she craves—justice for his father’s victims, but as the attraction between them intensifies, Cole and Anissa quickly realise that criminal and agent may not be so different after all….

Eden Summers has absolutely blown my mind with Torian! A dark masterpiece of sexual tension, unexpected passion and explosive situations, this novel lives up to its promise and more. After enjoying Hunter and Decker, Torian was already geared to be a fantastic read, with each inclusion of Cole throughout the previous two novels ramping up my desire to see him front and centre. Eden Summers writes both Torian the story and the man beautifully; layered, nuanced, deceptive, complex, conflicting and enthralling.

There’s a dark brutality to the story and the characters that will draw readers in as Summers details a series of events where not everything is black and white and grey seems to be the colour of choice. I simply adored both of our protagonists. As the novel unfolds through the varying perspectives of both Cole and Anissa, I really felt I got to know the characters exceptionally well, with a lot of surprising insights into their motivations and true natures coming to light as Torian progressed.

It almost goes without saying that I knew I was going to like Cole. Eden Summers has always written tortured, misunderstood heroes perfectly and it doesn’t help that much of what people say and think about Cole is somewhat true…..he’s a bit of a naughty boy, but he’s also loyal, determined and lives by his own code of morals. He’s also cocky, arrogant, intelligent and basically your ultimate panty-dropping bad boy. And I love him.

Plus, there’s FBI Special Agent Anissa Fox! A woman I thought might have been the devil after Decker but now can’t get enough of. In my history of reading there have been two female characters who have gone from being the villain in my eyes to someone I’ve come to love; Aphrodite from P.C. and Kristin Cast’s House of Night series and Nan from Abbi Gline’s Rosemary Beach series. Until now. Until Anissa Fox. Anissa is someone who comes across as a cold-hearted b**** but while she is a genuinely capable and intelligent woman, there is also a side to her that is somewhat gentle and vulnerable, a side very few see. Anissa has had to fight for her position in a male dominated industry and takes her job as an FBI agent very seriously which puts her in confliction with her blossoming desires and feelings for the very man she should be trying to bring down.

Torian sees two people who should be worlds apart—criminal and FBI agent—come together with explosive results. They’re technically toxic in a lot of ways for each other, but the push and pull between them is undeniable and so electrifying. Between the brutal, but so sassy and on point verbal exchanges and their desperate need to push each other, Anissa and Cole’s relationship truly lights up the pages. It’s obsessive and passionate and unexpectedly tender at times as they eventually give into their desires. It’s highly intriguing reading as they can’t stay away from each other but despite their differences and different ideals where morality and justice is concerns, they’re surprisingly similar in a lot of ways. Oh and the sex scenes? Seriously H.O.T!

Explosive in nature and thrilling with unexpected revelations and developments, Torian is a spectacular read. At no point did I want to put this novel down and as it came to a close, I was already desperate to see what Eden Summer’s had planned for Cole and Anissa next. I’ll be counting down the days until I can read their next story and highly recommend Torian as either a standalone or as part of the overall series—you won’t be sorry you gave it a go!

Review:

The North is the fourth novel in Leigh Walker’s Vampire Royals series and is another brilliant read, this time featuring previously introduced pageant contender Blake and details another romantic adventure, this time located in the vampires home land of the North.

The Pageant has ended, but the adventure has only just begun for Blake Kensington! After seeing her friend Gwyn fall in love with vampire prince, Dallas, Blake is ready to step into her role as Goodwill Ambassador for the North. Departing straight after the wedding of the century, Blake is excited to travel to a foreign country, but it’s her travel companion who she is most curious about. Prince Austin Black is handsome and mysterious, and so darn frustrating. Like his older brother Dallas, Austin is a vampire but unlike his brother, Austin has only ever seen humans as food…..until he met Blake. Austin seems to care for her and continues to make her heart race but as he struggles to be truthful, Blake finds herself wondering if what she feels is really worth the pain. As dangers increase in the North and with a werewolf threat hanging over their heads, will Blake and Austin find themselves lost to their enemies or will they instead lose their hearts to each other?

Having fallen in love with this series throughout the first three books, I was ecstatic to discover Leigh Walker planned to continue it despite the conclusion of Gwyn and Dallas’s tale. Though I would have adored to continue following them, especially during their wedding, I was excited about the prospect of getting to know Blake and see Walker capitalise on the chemistry she and Prince Austin had in the last novel.

The North marks a new chapter in this series as readers find themselves drawn into the mind and heart of Blake Kensington, a fellow pageant contender who became a good friend to Gwyn throughout the previous three books. I liked Blake then and I like her even more now, having read her story. Blake is a sweet, food loving and kind individual who is determined to be a good ambassador. She wants to protect those she cares about and is genuinely easy to follow.

Blake and Austin have a fantastic chemistry. Leigh Walker imbrues their romance with possibility and potential and so much sexual tension. I love seeing Blake stand up to Austin and want to know what was going on. It was adorable seeing Austin let her keep Beast (who was too cute for words I might add) and slowly begin to act on what he was feeling towards Blake. He couldn’t deny the attraction he felt and I have to admit there’s something so addictive about seeing a strong, male come apart over a woman.

There are so many characters in this series I absolutely love! I’m stoked to be able to follow Blake and Austin again in another story but I would also love to see Eve and maybe even Shaye feature in a tale down the track. I feel like they, especially Eve, have real stories to tell!

Leigh Walker has captured my attention once again with The North and I am utterly captivated by Blake and Austin’s relationship. I’m dying to read more about them as soon as possible and can’t recommend this series enough!

Book Shelf: Raging Rival Hearts (The Lost Clan #4) by Olivia Wildenstein

Raging Rival Hearts is a spinoff told from Lily's point of view.

I WAS A PRINCESS. I WAS ENGAGED. I WAS ALMOST IMMORTAL.

Breaking my engagement to the man I had loved my entire life was a dangerous move, one that got me expelled from the faerie isle. I’d known the risks, though. I’d known that if Cruz, Cat or my brother didn’t find a way to get me home, the fire in my veins would dwindle until it was gone, and with it my life.

Months slid by, and still nothing. With mere weeks left to live, I set out on a last adventure: discover if more Daneelies had survived the massacre, the same way Catori’s ancestor had. Although I’d decided to go alone, Kajika insisted on accompanying me.

I wanted to believe he was coming because he liked me. But I was still the enemy…the mute girl whom he could hear speak when no one else could…the one person who could track him when he didn’t want to be found.

Perfect for fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Vampire Diaries.

Review:

Raging Rival Hearts is the exciting fourth novel in Olivia Wildenstein’s The Lost Clan series and is a passionate and thrilling story featuring the lovely Lily Wood and brooding hunter Kajika as they fight to save Lily’s life.

Lily Wood is dying. After breaking off her engagement, Lily was locked out of the faerie world of Neverra and as a result the fire in her veins is slowly dwindling. Months have passed and as her brother and close friends have searched for a way for her to return home her body has finally begun breaking down. With only weeks left to live, Lily wants to make the most of the time she has left and do something good for those she loves. Setting out to find the elusive Daneelies seems like a great way to give her sister-in-law Cat something; a connection to her people. Yet Lily’s travel plans take an unexpected detour when the darkly haunted hunter Kajika decides to accompany her. Lily wants to believe that the stubborn and infuriating hunter is coming along for her but with their people enemies, Lily knows there can never be anything between them. So why does he constantly haunt her thoughts? As Lily’s time begins to run out, will she be able to find a miracle? Or is her time up just when she has found something to really live for?

The Lost Clan is a series I have come to highly adore. The world and storyline Olivia Wildenstein has created has never failed to capture my heart and soul and as Cat’s story came to a close, I was thrilled to learn I would still have the opportunity to immense myself once more in this mouth-watering and addictive series with Raging Rival Hearts featuring Lily and Kajika who I have loved in the past.

Picking up where the last instalment left off, Raging Rival Hearts was a tantalising and exhilarating story. Lily has always been someone who intrigued me, especially seeing as she was mute. The opportunity to get into the head and heart of this bewitching faerie who has always been so much of a mystery was so exciting and I have to say I think Wildenstein did a fantastic job with her tale.

I genuinely loved Lily as a person. She was so good and kind and everything I had hoped she would be. I adored the building tension she had with Kajika who has always been a favourite of mine (even though I was always Team Ace) and immensely loved seeing their relationship develop. It was electric in a simple, effortless way but so consuming at the same time. Each tension charged moment they shared where it was clear they were coming to care deeply about one another was so addictive. I simply wanted to see as much Lily and Kajika as possible; they were so good together.

Raging Rival Hearts is not without its heartbreak and loss. Olivia Wildenstein keeps her readers on their toes as Lily and those around her fight for a way to get her back into Neverra in time to save her life. Ultimately this comes at a cost but this emotionally development seems to fit in very well with the storyline that is full of moments or romance, friendship and family.

As this fourth novel ends beautifully and better than I could have ever asked for, Olivia Wildenstein leaves me dying for the release of the fifth and final novel Reckless Cruel Heirs that is set to feature a certain baby I came to love in Raging Rival Hearts and another faerie child who we’re yet to meet but I just know I’m going to adore based on who I’m sure her parents are!

A fantastic novel in a breathtaking and addictive series, I highly recommend Raging Rival Hearts and the entire Lost Clan series for those who love adventure, excitement and thrilling romance with bite and flair!
