Book Shelf: Take a Chance (Chance #1) by Abbi Glines

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the story of Grant, the sexy playboy who first captured readers hearts in Fallen Too Far.

When Harlow Manning's rocker father goes on tour, he sends her to Rosemary Beach, Florida, to live with her half-sister, Nan. The problem: Nan despises her. Harlow has to keep her head down if she wants to get through the next nine months, which seems easy enough. Until gorgeous Grant Carter walks out of Nan's room in nothing but his boxer briefs.

Grant made a huge mistake getting involved with a girl with venom in her veins. He'd known about Nan's reputation, but still he couldn't resist her. Nothing makes him regret the fling more than meeting Harlow, who sends his pulse racing. Yet Harlow wants nothing to do with a guy who could fall for her wicked half-sister—even if there are no strings between Grant and Nan. Grant is desperate to redeem himself in Harlow's eyes, but did he ruin his chances before he even met her?

Review:

Take a Chance is Grant and Harlow's eagerly awaited story and finally see's Abbi Glines explore Grant Carter and Harlow Manning like never before! This unlikely pairing is sure to please with their killer chemistry and electrifying romance!

All I can say is finally. Finally we have Grant and Harlow's story. Personally I feel like I've been waiting for this tale forever. Ever since Grant laid eyes on Harlow at Rush and Blaire's wedding I've known that these two would have one amazing romance. And boy was that the case!

I was so excited to read this story. Grant has always been a likable character, winning over fans from the moment Blaire held a gun on him in Fallen Too Far. He's been one of those solid supporting characters whom you just know has their own story to tell and I'm thrilled that we finally get to see the beginning of it in Take a Chance. To begin with Grant Carter is a ladies man. That's fairly obvious. With his good looks and wicked attitude he's obviously someone who does what he wants and enjoys what he does. Or is he?

Abbi Glines does what she's good at and explores a different side to Grant in Take a Chance. Far from what he seems on the surface Grant fears caring deeply for someone and then losing them. He's always managed to keep his relations strictly physical, with the exception of Nan, although he learned from that pretty quickly, but all this changes when Harlow Manning enters his life!

Harlow Manning is the beloved daughter of rock legend Kiro Manning and couldn't be any different than her famous father. Shy, quiet and sensible, Harlow is happy hiding in her room with her books and being by herself.....until Grant Carter saunters into her life and changes everything. Personally, I adored Harlow! She is my kind of girl through and through; kind, selfless and sweet, I enjoyed seeing her grown and watching her embrace life.

I was a tad disappointed with how Grant and Harlow's romance begins in Take a Chance. That was really my only issue with the book and it had more to do with Abbi's writing style of this event than the actual content within the story. Take a Chance begins with Harlow seeing Grant months after the initial start to their relationship began and then ended, and it's not until Glines takes us into the past that we learn, and experience what happened. Personally I would have loved to have just seen it all unfold from beginning to end, but that's just me....

Abbi Glines tells a very complicated, and very difficult tale with Grant and Harlow's story, one that see's the two face many obstacles in their relationship from the very beginning, including Grant's sordid past with Harlow's sister Nanette and Harlow's secrets. I will admit, the chemistry these two share is off the charts! They're beyond electrifying and Glines writes their sex life nothing short of sizzling.

I certainly can't fault their connection, but it's the deeper issues where Grant and Harlow struggle. Grant has made many, many mistakes where Harlow is concerned; some that even I as the reader at times struggled to forgive Grant. You could say he's just a guy, but sometimes rationality isn't there. Harlow is very insecure where Grant is concerned, and this coupled with the difficulty Nan plays on their relationship sees them struggle at times. Don't get me wrong; I think they're perfect for each other, and it's obviously going to be a hard road ahead, but I think everything they've faced and will face will only make them stronger!

Saucy, sizzling and sexy, Take a Chance is a red-hot read! Glines stays true to her past stories; ending Take a Chance on a killer cliff-hanger that has this fan hankering for the next book pronto!

From Unrequited......

In the town of Belle Ridge, there were doctors, lawyers, and teachers. But there was only one vampire, and he happened to be the high school history teacher.

Will Leighton always loved the start of a new school year. Classes were set to begin the next day, and as he looked around his classroom at the empty chairs, he smiled as he imagined them filled with chattering young people. He always looked forward to catching up with former students and getting to know new ones. The sense of community he felt as a teacher was the only thing that came close to making him feel like he was part of something, like he belonged.

Will was an outsider, and he knew it. No matter how many friends he made or local groups he joined, there was always a thread of solitude running through everything he did. The loneliness had a certain feeling to it. It wasn’t quite sad, or depressing, it was more like he was adrift with nothing he could truly connect to. But on this day, somewhere in his two-hundredth or so year on Earth, Will felt something he never had before: familiarity. Something in himself was being pulled, as though by a magnet, toward a nearby presence. Could it be that after so many years, Will Leighton wasn't alone anymore?

Monday Madness-September 2014

Alright, it's time for my Monday Madness giveaway for September and like my previous Monday Madness I'll be giving away TWO books to make up for missing a month---The Winners Curse by Marie Rutkoski & Waterfell by Amalie Howard!

Here's a little about what I thought of these books.....

"A rich and compelling read, The Winners Curse is a beguiling tale of politics, secrets and honour woven together with a complex love story that spans different social standings and sees a strong young woman face losing everything she loves for the chance to save her people."

"Waterfell is a well written and riveting on land adventure that mixes romance and friendship with otherworldly sea creatures in this exciting tale that sees typical teen drama mingle with undersea political agendas and surprising dangers!"

Winning what you want may cost you everything you love.

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction.

Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Book Blitz: Undertow by K.R. Conway- Excerpt & Giveaway

Welcome to the Book Blitz for Undertow by K.R. Conway thanks to YA Bound Book Tours! Even though I'm yet to read this book, I love the sound of the series and am thrilled to share it with you today :)
________________________________

High school senior Eila Walker knows that good luck skips over her like an Easter Bunny on Speed. So when she inherits her grandmother's million-dollar Cape Cod home, she is downright shocked. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself.

A self-proclaimed loner and previous-social reject, Eila thinks she's hit the jackpot when drool-worthy Raef O’Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow. But being hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow slams the brakes on bliss – especially when Raef storms to her aid with coal-black eyes and iron-like strength.

Eila, entirely freaked, demands an explanation and Raef comes clean, revealing that neither of them are average humans but rather the genetic remnants of an angelic pissing-match gone wrong. Eila supposedly can channel the power of human souls, while Raef is quite adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn't such a myth, since Eila’s grandmother was one kick-ass warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila's DNA.

Now sought by Raef’s own family for her destructive ability, Eila must trust him to watch her back. But when a quest for information goes terribly wrong, Eila is suddenly left with only two options: become a weapon for the enemy or follow in her Gram’s fearless footsteps to save those she loves. Unfortunately she needs a willing enemy to ignite her suicidal energy and the only one she trusts has been guarding her butt and scorching her lips.

From Undertow.....

Five weeks ago, I nearly killed the girl I loved.

It wasn't an accident. It wasn't a mistake.

I did it deliberately, and the feeling of her body weakening in my arms haunts me still, as if branded into my hands. The sound of her last, thin breath replays over and over in my mind, a taunting reminder of what I am capable of and what I had done.

She carries the mark of where I had forced a stolen soul into her - a thin, finger-long scar engraved between her breasts.

She tries to hide it, but I know it's there.

She will carry that scar to her grave, a permanent reminder of who I truly am - a killer, designed by the darker hand of fate.

The scar had bled down her beautiful, fair skin that night, turning the bodice of the white ball gown she had worn into a sickening, mottled pink. In my mind I see her, lifeless, tucked under me as I try to shield her from the pieces of falling stone and wood that rain down around us. Debris that was from the massive hole her energy had drilled through the Breakers. Energy that was unleashed when her body switched to overload, and her DNA hit the self-destruct button because of me.

In her own words: I have been a journalist for 15 years and serve on the Board of Directors for the Cape Cod Writers Center. I also drive a 16-ton school bus because I am ENTIRELY NUTS.

In addition to working jobs that should come with a warning label , I hold a BA in Psychos (Forensic Psych), torment the tourists about Jaws, and occasionally jump from the Town Neck bridge in an attempt to reclaim my youth.

I live on Cape Cod with two smallish humans who apparently are my kids, my fishing-obsessed husband, two canines (adept at both flatulence and snoring), and a cage-defiant lovebird that sleeps in a miniature tent. Nope - that's not a type-o. The bird is quite the indoor camper.

From Violet Storm.......

"Are you okay?" I start to inch toward him. Maybe something hurts badly and he’s just being too big of a man to admit it.

He raises a halting hand. "Let me finish. What I’m trying to say is you’re obviously well put together. You look… I mean, you know…ugh, forget it." He turns away giving me only his cheek, now the color of ripe crimson, to stare at.

"That’s okay. Honestly, I don’t want to know." The last thing I want to hear is how disturbed he is by my face. For some reason it matters. I don’t want him to think of me as ugly.

"Oh, I bet you don’t," he says. "You don’t seem the type."

I release an exaggerated breath of patience. "So now I’m a type?" It’s like trying to make sense out of a child’s rambling.

"You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?" Those gold-rimmed eyes cut back to me, except this time his gaze roams over me with slow, lingering deliberation.

The air I was in the middle of breathing catches in my throat. There it is again…the desire I have never seen directed at me with such acuteness. Fear, yes. But desire? No one’s ever spared so much as a second glance. I’m Aeva Storm, known most prominently as "The Hellstorm," a Fila champion, whose grace and beauty were only ever on the Fila field. The only emotion people felt for me besides reverence and fear, was jealousy.

"What nonsense are you talking about now?" I ask, slightly breathless.

Something in Karth changes again. His expression becomes serene, eyes glowing, his movements languid and predatory. He surges from the fallen trunk, all confidence back in his strong, lean body. He walks right up to me, so close I have to tilt back to see his face. He leans down, whatever distance between us now gone.

My knees go a little weak, lips pursing tightly to suppress their sudden trembling. I turn away, not wanting him to see the unfamiliar fear in my eyes, but I can still feel the breath from his lips caressing my cheek.

He says the next words quietly, "I said, you know what—"

"I heard you," I whisper harshly. "And no. I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about."

"Oh, sure…" He draws the word out, his voice husky. "But I’ve seen this all before."

I turn back to him, frowning with confusion, feeling strangely hypnotized. This close, his long, luminous face is even more striking. A foreign sensation twists and tumbles in the lower region of my abdomen, clenching taut.

He smiles rather wolfishly, his canines looking somewhat sharper. "People like you…not who they’re pretending to be—not who they’re supposed to be."

His words aren’t making any sense. But maybe that’s my fault, too flustered and unfocused by his nearness. My is body demanding so many inexplicable things that I can’t string even the simplest thoughts together.

"What’s coming out of your mouth doesn’t add up to what I’m seeing."

"What?" Is all I can manage.

Karth reaches for me, trailing a long finger down the length of my cheek. Fire spreads from where he touches, briefly consuming all thought. I shiver, eyes drifting closed.

"Don’t think that I haven’t noticed," he whispers, and I swear I can feel his lips brush against mine. "How a girl like you…"

My lips part, sucking in the caress of his soft breath, my body wanting so badly to see where this is all leading.

But then there is space, cold air where there was once warmth. "How a girl like you…" A hardness enters his tone, coated with an unsettling darkness. "Could have incredible hearing more attuned than my own. With the ability to see in pitch black as if it were light as day, who hasn’t eaten or drank a thing for a full day and night," he adds with a chuckle. It held no warmth, no kindness, no mercy. "And let’s not forget, the ability to push a grown man several feet with the force of inhuman strength. Oh, yes…I’ve seen this all before."

The excitement of his touch evaporates. His words are no longer lost on me. It all comes back, and this time with unfailing clarity.

Karth’s voice is like the first chill of winters’ kiss. "So I’ll ask you one last time, who are you?"

Slowly, I raise my gaze to Karth’s. His eyes no longer show desire. No. They look as empty and as detached as they had when he’d killed Jervis.

Review:

Anna Soliveres’s debut novel, Violet Storm is a rich and descriptive forward moving dystopian novel that is deeply entertaining and blends together elements of sci-fi with danger, intrigue and betrayal.

Told through the eyes of Aeva Storm, a tough as nails athlete, Violet Storm is a futuristic dystopian that sees Aeva’s world turned upside down when her village is destroyed and she is kidnapped and modified into something more than human. Now struggling with her newfound abilities and the loss of time between when she was playing a Fila game to when she woke up drastically altered with her family presumed dead, Aeva finds herself at the centre of diabolical plan to overthrow her kingdom’s Monarch. Forced to play the role of someone she is not in order to get close to those in power, Aeva slowly discovers that she is the perfect weapon to bring about a new era where everyone are transformed into Modi’s (modified human beings) and only by making hard decisions will Aeva been able to save her people.

I’ll be honest here; I went into this novel not sure what to expect. The premise sounded promising, but at the same time didn’t give too much away. I had hopes I would enjoy it, but didn’t expect too much. I was ecstatic to discover from the opening chapter of the novel that the story was completely captivating.

Violet Storm was a rich dystopian read that follows a strong heroine and has an exciting storyline. I was entertained by its fast moving storyline and really enjoyed the character dynamic seen throughout the story. There were plenty of surprises and developments that altered the storyline from time to time and kept things moving in unpredictable directions.

As the main character, I very much liked Aeva. She’s clever and daring and has a lot of fight in her. That being said, Aeva really finds herself caught between a rock and a hard place in this novel; an unwilling pawn in a horrible plan to over throw her nations monarch. With those she loves threatened, Aeva doesn’t have a lot of choice, except to go along with a plan to assassinate her king. An athlete through and through, Aeva has a lot of fire in her and her modified body combines perfectly with her brave heart to see her fight to make the right choices, so matter how badly she wishes she didn’t have to.

Author Anna Soliveres introduces Aeva to two very different possible love interests over the course of the book although there isn’t any real romance within the story at this point in time. Personally I think there’s possibility with both guys and like them both, although I think the one Aeva meets first may just have a nose on the other guy in my mind.

Lush and exciting, Violet Storm races towards a thrilling ending that sees out heroine make a startling choice and surprises be revealed. Featuring a great ending that opens up a world of possibilities for Soliveres to develop the story further, I’m super excited to read the next book as soon as it’s released!

From Stay With Me......

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand.
“Why?” I asked.
There was a beat. “Why what?”
Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.
A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.
But then he moved.
Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”
“But—”
“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.
“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.
His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.”
I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed.
Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.
Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?
“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter.
“Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.”
He chuckled.
I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.
I felt cared for . . . cherished.
Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.
