The Stars Never Rise is the first novel in Rachel Vincent’s latest YA series and is a riveting and unique post-apocalyptic/dystopian tale that introduces an intriguing world and complicated characters.

I’ve previously read and loved Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers, so when I learnt she had a new YA series coming out, I knew I had to get on board. Having finally gotten around to reading The Stars Never Rise, I have to say I thought it was a promising first novel in a new series and definitely managed to entrance me. It started off just the tiniest bit slow for me, but I’m interested in the story and the characters; especially Finn. His particular predicament is really unique and entertaining. I won’t give any spoilers away, but it makes for intriguing reading where Nina and he are concerned.
The world within The Stars Never Rise was well thought out and expressed. I know some people will shy away from the religious aspect of the story, but I thought it was well executed on Rachel Vincent’s part and liked the complexity it brought to the story. The whole idea of demons and demonic possession as well as exorcists and the deformed and brutal degenerates was awesome. Admittedly there are some darker parts to the story that may not sit well with everyone, but I loved the rawness and git it brought to this urban fantasy tale.
The dedication Nina has towards her sister was admirable and I loved the determination she had to protect her. In this demon infested world, I liked that Vincent wrote in some strong family bonds. As well as the bonds of friendship she demonstrated between Finn and his fellow exorcist friends. These guys are a close bunch and I really liked them.
Racing towards a climactic ending and more than a few unexpected surprises, The Stars Never Rise is a forward moving and action riddled tale that has me raring to jump straight into the sequel, The Flame Never Dies straight away!
