Blog Tour: Chameleon by Kelly Oram-Guest Post and GIVEAWAY!!

Today the Chameleon by Kelly Oram blog tour stops at The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Since reading V is for Virgin and The Avery Shaw Experiment, I've becoming quite a fan of Kelly Oram. Her books are fun and quirky and so brilliantly written. As Kelly makes the jump from contemporary writing with a dash of sci-fi on the side into straight fantasy/paranormal with Chameleon, the fabulous lady herself is here to share her leap into this whole new genre!

____________________________________

I completely understand why so many writers pick one genre and stay there. Each story genre from suspense to sci-fi to romance to fantasy has its own flavor. They all have their own set of rules and clichés. As a writer, you really have to know and understand your genre in order to write a great book. This is not easy. It takes time, research, and a certain love—a real passion—for whatever specific genre you chose to write in.

Personally, I simply cannot stick to one genre. (As a reader and a writer.) I love too many of them way too much, and get bored when I stay with one genre for too long. I have always had a love for paranormal and fantasy books, but it took me a long time to build up the courage to write it myself.

I started out as a contemporary writer, and then took my first shot at something new with my comic-book-esque novel Being Jamie Baker. Jamie turned out to be a great transition novel. It has a lot of contemporary elements to it but also takes that first step into make-believe. It gave me my first taste of bending the real-world rules. I immediately grew a major thirst for it, but knew I had a lot to learn before I delved fully into the world of fantasy.

Contemporary fiction and fantasy are two entirely different beasts. There were two major differences that posed as challenges to me. The first was the difference in story lines. Contemporary works tend to be more character driven. Plots often revolve around a romance, or overcoming emotional obstacles. Your main character is often trying to defeat their inner demons, whereas with fantasy most of the time the demons are the literal kind.

Fantasy plots are usually more action driven. You have a villain to defeat, a mystery to solve, an adventure to go on. This doesn’t come as naturally to me as a plot that revolves around a characters dealing with emotions or falling in love. The more involved plot took much more planning. My outlines had to be a lot more detailed, and I had a lot more rewrites because I’d find plot holes or I’d back myself into a corner and have to find another way to make something work. I actually learned a lot while doing this and had a great time with it. I’ve always been a bit of an outliner, but now I think it’s safe to say I’m a bit obsessive about it.

The other main difference I noticed was in the description. When dealing with fantasy, suddenly you have to explain a lot more. You really have to be a lot more visual. You can’t just quickly describe your character’s sexiness and give a brief paragraph about the beach house they’re spending the summer at or whatever. You have to build an entire world for your reader that they’ve never seen before. You have to describe creatures that don’t really exist. You have to explain all of the lore and set up a whole new set of rules for people to understand. All of these new things are not something your reader will automatically relate to. If you can’t help them visualize it, they will never be able to get sucked into your story the way you want them too.

Personally, as a writer my strengths lie in character interaction and dialog. Description and action are a challenge for me. I loved being able to tackle my weaknesses and watch my writing improve, but it took a lot of time, effort and practice before I felt I was ready to write something I could share with people. (I have a few fantasy stories that will never leave my hard drive because they suck oh so badly!)

The good news is that so much blood, sweat and tears (and hair loss!) went into this manuscript that I grew a special love for it. Everything felt new and exciting, and made it easy for me to want to work my hardest to make Chameleon the best book I could write. I’m very proud of it, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Hopefully I’ve succeeded in my genre jump. Hopefully this book will feel like something new and refreshing compared to my previous books, and I hope my contemporary fans will give it a chance because I developed a brand new passion. I’m sure I will always have a good contemporary novel in the works, but I plan to write many more fantasy books in the future.

For small-town rebel Dani Webber magic and monsters are no more real than the Easter Bunny… until the day she accidentally stops time. Dani quickly discovers that not only do supernaturals exist, but she herself is one of them. This is great news for her life-long best friend Russ, who can finally come clean about his own supernatural status and his undying love for her. Before the two can start to enjoy the long overdue relationship, Dani is taken by a powerful council of supernaturals who believe she is the Chosen One destined to save them from extinction.

As if being kidnapped and expected to save the world isn’t bad enough, an ancient prophecy warns of the Chosen One’s dark nature: “Only the truest love will keep her an agent for good.” The council believes they know who this “true love” is and, unfortunately, that person isn’t Russ. The mysterious, powerful and devastatingly handsome Seer is the last person Dani wants in her life, but when she starts having visions of a horrific future, she has no one else to turn to for help. Soon Dani finds herself torn between two very different boys with two very different opinions of whom she can trust. With the visions getting worse and time running out, Dani is forced to put aside her feelings and work with both the Seer and Russ before an ancient evil is unleashed upon the earth.

Book Shelf: Because of Low (Sea Breeze #2) by Abbi Glines

Set in the steamy coastal Alabama town of Sea Breeze, an interconnected group of older teens hook up, break up ...and much, much more. Marcus Hardy had hoped to enjoy a year away at college while he put the summer he'd rather forget behind him. But instead, he's jerked right back his home town of Sea Breeze due to a family crisis. The only bright spot to returning is the hot redhead who sleeps over at his place several times a week. There's just one thing though - she's sleeping in bed with his new roommate, Cage York.

Willow "Low" Foster needs a place to live. Running to her best friend Cage's apartment every time her sister kicks her out isn't exactly a long term solution. But Cage has a new roommate and suddenly sleeping over at his apartment isn't such a bad thing. Not when she gets to see those sexy green eyes of Marcus's twinkle when he smiles at her like he wants her there. There's one problem though, Cage is under the disillusion that when he's through sowing his wild oats, he's going to marry Low - an assumption Marcus intends to change. But when his carefully laid plans come crashing down with a revelation he never expected, Marcus will have to choose between Low or his family. Because once the truth comes out ...there's no other choice.

Review:

Because of Low is a fun, sensual tale by Abbi Glines that really will have you rapidly turning the pages, yet at the same time, desperately hoping the story isn't about to end!

From start to finish, Because of Low really is a great read. While this isn't actually the first book in Glines's Sea Breeze series, this is this first one I have read, although I definitely know it won't be the last! Chronologically, Because of Low takes place after the first book in the series, Breathe, and considering I'm yet to read Breathe, I must point out that you don't necessarily need to have read Breathe to pick this novel up....it can quite easily be read on it's own, or as part of the rest of the series.

In Because of Low, Abbi Glines introduces us to Willow "Low" Foster, a sweet, vulnerable girl who's had a tough run in life as well as Marcus Hardy, who's own family is falling apart and who was also the unlucky love interest in Breathe, although he's the leading man this time around.

Told in dual POV, this book tells the story of Low and Marcus as they connect with each other amidst their joint trust issues and family drama, seeing them ultimately fall in love. Considering that Because of Low is a fairly short book (I read it in two sittings), the relationship between Low and Marcus does come on strongly, and their love for one another fast, however it was easy to overlook this fact as Glines creates such a great dynamic between the characters in the story.

It was nice seeing this story unfold. The plot is admittedly simple, but in this case the saying less is more really does fit as the simple story is easily addictive to read about. Abbi Glines has done a great job with her flawed, yet very likable characters. There are a number of great characters that litter the pages of Because of Low and as she explores the relationship between Low and Marcus, Glines also allows us to read about the relationships between Low and Cage as well as Low and her niece Larissa, which I found both to be interesting for very different reasons.

I found I liked both Low and Marcus very much. I admit, I had a few problems with Lows character at times, especially towards the end of the book, but for the most part, I really enjoyed these two. Both together, and as individuals. Together, they have a really sweet chemistry that coats the pages. By herself Low has a lot of fears and a few problems, but she's a really nice girl and someone you can easily like for the most part. As for Marcus, he's a typical guy. This golden boy makes mistakes and makes the wrong choices, but he does care for Low and dearly loves his family.

As Glines weaves together Marcus's and Low's lives, there are a few interesting twists throughout the story that make it so much juicer. This book really showcases how human we can all be; we all have fears and we all make mistakes. That's part of life and we have to forgive and move on. Glines makes this abundantly clear where Low and Marcus are concerned and as their story ends, I find myself very eager for Cage's.

Glines has definitely made a fan in me, and I'll be on the lookout terrific tales from her in the future!

Interview with Katie McGarry & GIVEAWAY!

Today I'm thrilled to be interviewing author of Pushing the Limits and Dare You To Katie McGarry! I also have two copies of Katie's latest release, Dare You To to give away to two lucky Australian followers thanks to Morey Media and HarlequinTeen :)

Don't forget to check out my review of Dare You To, but let's jump straight into the interview! Enjoy!

_________________________________

Hi Katie!

Thank you so much for agreeing to take the time out of your busy writing schedule to chat with me. I'm really excited to ask you a few questions about your latest release, Dare You To, which hit stores in the US on May 28th and then here in Australia in early June.

Now, I don't want to take up too much of your time, so let's begin shall we?

1. First off, I have to say congratulations on Dare You To's recent release! Personally, I know how excited I was to finally read the book, so I know it must be a really exciting time for you. Are you as nervous to hear what people think of the book as I imagine you were with the first in the series?
I think I’ll always be nervous. I put a bit of my soul into my stories so it’s hard to wait to hear what people think of them. So far, I’ve been thrilled with the reviews for both PUSHING THE LIMITS and DARE YOU TO.

2. Considering that readers all over the world fell in love with your writing and storytelling in the first book, Pushing the Limits, how was it for you as an author to tell Beth's tale this time around? Was there any added pressure?
I actually wrote DARE YOU TO before PUSHING THE LIMITS was released so I was able to write it in a vacuum. There’s always a pressure when I write—I want to do my characters justice. I want to tell their story correctly.

Beth and Ryan gave me some problems at times. They were determined to change the story I had plotted. Sometimes I fought them, but they always won!

3. To someone who hasn't yet read Dare You To, how would you describe it in five words?
Intense, romantic, gritty, hot, swoon-worthy!

4. I'm a massive fan of the characters in this series. Not only Beth and Ryan from this book, but also the others we fell in love with in book one, Noah, Echo and Isaiah. How do you manage to write such really, deep characters? Obviously, they're very flawed, but really , that's what makes them so real.
I try to know everything about my characters when I write them. I want to know their favorite color, movie, first kiss, first date. What they like and don’t like. I think knowing all the little things about them help create deep characters.

5. Speaking of characters...Beth! My goodness! I don't think I've ever felt for a girl while reading a book more! Maybe it's just me, but I can honestly say I've known girls like Beth; hardened, lonely....just wanting someone to love them. I have to know, did you take inspiration for Beth's character from anywhere in particular?
While I’m not Beth, not at all, I do understand her. At one point in my life, I traveled a difficult path and I lost the ability to trust. I gave Beth this part of my life and it wasn’t easy to revisit those dark places.

6. There's so much emotion in your books. You really know how to explore deep issues like cutting and teen depression. Why is that so important for you to explore?
Because I want people to know that no matter what problem they are facing that there is always hope.

7. And in ending, I have to ask....You allowed us a glimpse into the opening chapters of Crash into You, Isaiah's story at the end of Dare You To, and considering his leading lady not only has an awesome name (I'm not bias, I swear!) and an intriguing life, are there any little hints you can give us about what we're in for in book three? Anything at all? Please, please throw us a bone!
There are going to be some seriously fast cars and some hot kissing!

But before you go.....
6 Quick Questions:

Favorite color? Purple
Favorite movie? Casablanca
Day or Night? Day
Books or Movies? Books
Favorite ice-cream flavor? Chocolate Chip
Lucky number? 3

Thanks again Katie for allowing me to ask you a few questions! Personally, I LOVED Dare You To and I'm looking forward to many, many more terrific books from you in the future :)

Review:

Dare You To is the sensational follow up to Kate McGarry’s debut novel Pushing The Limits and is as good as, if not better than its predecessor. Filled with nothing but pure emotion, desire and harsh, raw characters, Dare You To will made you feel and feel everything!

Kate McGarry is a literacy genius! Plain and simple. With a talent for creating real, believable characters that are easy to empathize with and with a talent for creating storylines that draw you in and never let you go, my goodness does this woman know how to break my heart!

It’s a beautiful thing to read a book like Dare You To. And a very rare thing too. In a time where one YA book flows into the next and storylines seem so similar, there’s something so spectacular about discovering a book, and series, that can rip you apart in its emotion. From start to finish, Beth’s story made me bleed. That’s the only way to describe it. Thanks in part to Pushing The Limit, I felt I already knew what kind of life Beth had, but as the events of this Dare You To unfolded, it became clear that things were worse than I expected.

Kate McGarry ripped every possible emotion from as I read this book. Told in dual POV, McGarry details the lives of Beth Risk and Ryan Stone, the skater girl and golden boy. Two very unexpected young lovers who connect so deeply, that every moment of their story held me captivated—in fact, I tore through the book in less than a day. One of the shining aspects of this book for me is that Kate McGarry in no way shys away from the harsh critical aspects of Beth’s life. She explores the impacts drugs can have on the relationship between mother and daughter, where the roles are reversed and the one meant to be doing the protecting is in need of protection themselves. When a sad individual needs their child to protect them, and deal with the beatings/and consequenses, simply because they aren’t strong eough to deal with it themselves. This is real. This is something I don’t doubt people deal with every day and McGarry makes you face it in Dare You To. And she makes you see.

As with the previous book, the characters in Dare You To were perfect. They were real and believable and incredible to read about. McGarry has created a great cast of characters in this series, all so different, all so flawed and yet that work together. Each one from Beth and Ryan to their friends Noah, Isaiah, Chris, Logan and Lacy, to the parental figures of Beth’s uncle Scott and Ryans mum and dad….they gave the book an authenticity that it really needed.

As the male lead Ryan is a fantastic character. He’s got a real personality, unlike many golden boys of YA literature and he’s actually quite strong in himself. He obviously has his issues, but together with Beth he begins to deal with them as he falls for the rough-around-the-edges skater girl who’s so much for than she seems. And speaking of…..

Beth. Beth Risk. Stop me if I’m wrong, but to me, Beth is one of the most incredibly portrayed characters I’ve read about. Ever. Beth is broken. That’s the only way I can put it. It’s very rare to come across a character so incredibly broken, and yet is unconditionally real. I know girls like Beth. I’ve never been one, but I’ve seen them. Girls from broken homes, where alcoholism and drugs run rampant. Girls who are labeled because of the bad choices they’ve made regarding boys and relationships….all in an effect to be loved. And feel loved. Yes. I liked Beth. Yes. I felt for her. Yes…..my heart bled for this girl as I read Dare You To. Kate McGarry has done a beautiful thing in writing Beth. Writing someone so flawed and afraid, and rightly so. The pain of a life lived like Bath could break anyone, so that’s way seeing things begin to slowly get better; seeing Beth start to trust, and love, felt so rewarding.

And as for Beth and Ryan together, well….I’ll be honest, when I heard that Beth wasn’t going to be paired with Isaiah, I was a little bit surprised. And disappointed. But you know what? After reading this book…I get it. I get it. I completely understand why McGarry wrote the series the way she did. Isaiah was…is Beth’s best friend, and they have a very deep connection. He was always there for her; the one she turned to when life was hard. He may have helped make the pain go away from a while, but he never fixed it. Being with him didn’t make the pain go away for Beth. Only Ryan, as surprising as it sounds, could do that. The love he had for her and the way he felt about her was the only thing that could make her feel worthy, that could make her feel good enough.

In all honestly I’m not sure my review does this book justice. Dare You To is perfect. It really is. There’s so much raw emotion and pain that litters the pages, and yet as the story unfolds and Kate McGarry allows her characters to find strength and happiness in one another, this book couldn’t be more of a pleasure to read.

Dare You To is an incredible deep, emotional read, yet fun and romantic too. The chemistry between the main characters burns and the story is electric. This is one contemporary romance you’ll regret missing out on. Trust me…..

Review:

Unravelling by Elizabeth Norris takes mystery to a whole new level as this exciting sci-fi novel takes you on a mystifying adventure that will have you eagerly turning the pages and anticipating what will happen next!

Janelle Tenner was dead. Until loner Ben Michaels brings her back to life. Then things start getting really strange…..I must say it’s been quite a while since I’ve read a novel like Unravelling. Author Elizabeth Norris weaves a complex tale of the paranormal kind in this story; one that has you on the edge of your seat and scratching your head for the majority of the time, wondering just what is going on.

I very much found myself enjoying Unravelling. There’s so many fantastic elements to it that all blend so perfectly together. With a bunch of mysterious and gruesome deaths, strange occurrences and an unidentified countdown, this book really nails its twists and turns.

Norris’s writing does her story justice and the characters are likable. As we watch our main character Janelle stumble her way through trying to save the world, finding love and ultimately herself along the way, I imagined Janelle as quite the mini-detective. Considering her father is an FBI agent, Janelle quickly thrusts herself into the heart of the mysterious goings on in her town, and as she connects each piece together bit by bit, it was really hard not to like this stubborn, strong heroine.

I liked all the other characters in the book too. Ben, Elijah and Reid prove to be of interesting origins and Alex proves to be a great confidant and best friend to Janelle. Struz is funny as her dad’s partner; someone who is like a big brother/second father with his childlike, yet occasionally serious personality and Janelle’s little brother Jared is a cutie in his own way too. Admittedly, I did enjoy the romance between Janelle and Ben (how could I not?) however it does come on relatively fast considering everything that’s going on. Then again, I suppose from Ben’s POV that’s really not the case.

Elisabeth Norris doesn’t shy away from complexity in this book, intermingling her storylines. There’s a number of shockers in this book too; including characters going bye, bye fairly quickly and revelations you don’t expect. I did feel that the ending was kinda abrupt. It seemed to me that there were so many things happening in a short, rushed, period of time and then the book was over. I understand things build to a climax and then end, but with so much going on around the world I would have liked a bit more of a solid ending from Norris.

And yet with this chapter of the story coming to a close, I’m really excited to see what’s going to happen in the next book. It’s going to be interesting see the consequences of so many things that happened in Unravelling and I look forward to seeing what happens next!

Guest Post:
The book started out as a short story. My now-former literary agent was putting together a Zombie Romance anthology to shop with major publishers. Zombie Romance in itself is weird---when was the last time you wanted to make out with a zombie? I thought hard about the concept and wrote a short piece that eventually became ZOMBIE, INCORPORATED’s final chapter. But the short story didn’t fit with the ones from other authors so it didn’t make the anthology cut, even though the anthology sold to St. Martin’s Press. I still wanted to do more work in the world I created though. After I parted ways with the former literary agent who asked me to write it, my new agent encouraged me to expand the idea into three chapters and a book proposal, so I did. That book proposal also went nowhere, since the setting for the story involved an 18-year-old girl who was embarking on her first job in the adult world---not the norm for the zombie genre, but it is the norm for the emerging New Adult genre. But I just couldn’t let the idea go, so I wrote what is now the first installment in a planned three-book series.

I completed the manuscript and my literary representation still showed little to no interest in a New Adult zombie series. But I know readers are demanding New Adult paranormal books even if publishers aren’t putting them out, so I just went the self-publishing route instead of waiting for publishers to catch up with readers. The worldbuilding and character development for this series is substantial, and Book One ends on a cliffhanger as the heroine’s zombie romantic interest finally makes his first appearance.

It’s ironic---I couldn’t get editors or my own literary agents to read the book because it was so outside the zombie norm (it’s a New Adult psychological thriller!), but reader response has been fantastic. Readers love the book and are demanding more, more, more! My agent is now very interested, and has even asked a New York Times bestselling author (I’ll announce who it is later) to do a cover blurb for me. Goes to show that a good book will always find an audience, no matter how different it is!

Author Jill Elaine Hughes in her own words!
I'm an independent author of New Adult (mature YA, 18-26) fiction as well as a full-time freelance journalist based in Chicago. I've contributed to the Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Chicago Reader and many magazines as a journalist over the past 15 years. And like most New Adult fiction authors these days, I've gone the self-publishing route for my work since most publishers haven't caught up to the readership trends in this emerging shelf category. My writing is usually laced with humor and also often has sexual and/or dystopian elements.

Monday Madness Giveaway- June 2013!

Welcome to the June edition of Monday Madness! On the last Monday of every month I'll be giving away a copy of the book I was most mad about. I've read some good books this month, but my favorite is by far Reboot by Amy Tintera! So to celebrate it, I'm giving away a copy!

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.
