Should you only marry for love?

Since breaking with her last boyfriend, Karen has refused to trust any man her age. For the past three years, she has not dated the same one twice, and only one in ten has received even a goodnight kiss as she turned him away. Karen is an artist. She follows her feelings, lives in a cluttered loft, and gushes over vivid sunsets.

Mark still dreams about his almost-fiancée, and his date book has been empty since he threw her out a week before he’d planned to ask for her hand. His friends call him the “Ice Man,” since he seldom smiles, especially at a woman. A math professor at the College, logic guides his behavior, he loves order, and an elegant proof is a thing of beauty.

Both Karen and Mark have all but abandoned hope of ever falling in love, and, left on their own, these opposites would never attract. So, their mothers become matchmakers, entangling them in a series of dates, extracting promises that they will go out together three times, suggesting that, in the absence of love, a “marriage of convenience” is a live option.

If you like heartwarming stories based on true-to-life behaviors, with complicated relationships and a less-than-certain outcome, you will enjoy Just Three Dates!

“You need a husband.”

A week and a half had passed since her lunch at the Grill. Wrapped in a beach towel, Karen sat under the awning on the patio behind her parents’ house, a few chips, a bite of hamburger, and the remainder of her Coke on the table beside her, the cool water in the pool tempting her to take another plunge. Her mother sat on the other side of the table, a glass of red wine standing beside the remains of her meal.

“Mother, we’ve talked about this before and—”

“Stop.” Her mother held up her hand. “This afternoon, I’m the one who is going to talk, and you are going to listen.”

Karen opened her mouth to begin her litany of objections, but changed her mind. She felt weary of arguing. She folded her hands, glared at her mother, and waited.

“I’m listening. Go ahead.”

Her mother leaned forward, resting one arm on the table. “You are twenty-five years old, and you need to have some concern about your future.”

“I do, Mom,” Karen exclaimed. “I’m a college graduate. I have a good job—”

“You’re supposed to let me talk.”

Karen sighed. “Okay.”

“You are twenty-five years old, you’re a college graduate, and you have a good job.” Margaret nodded. “One that makes it possible for you to have a four-room apartment above an attorney’s office on King Street.” She paused, watching as Karen bit her lower lip.

“I love my apartment and the location is terrific.”

“You’re listening, remember? Not talking?”

Karen shut her mouth firmly and made a show of pretending to insert a key and turning it to lock her mouth closed, a gesture from her childhood. Karen had always been “rather verbal,” as one of her teachers had put it.

Her mother chuckled at the gesture. “Your apartment really is quite pretty. You’ve decorated it nicely, and it is very close to the museum, but, sweetheart, it’s not how you are accustomed to living. Your friends trip over each other as they walk from the living room to the kitchen. You have no space for even a small table, so you eat at the bar.

“You have very basic insurance. You have no savings, you’ve never taken a vacation, and when your car departed this life last year, I bought you a new one.”

“You insisted on buying it. I would have found—” Karen pinched her lips shut, finding it virtually impossible not to jump into the conversation.

“A used car that was little better than the one that you last saw behind a tow truck. My point is, sweetie, you are just getting by and—”

“Do you know how many people would love to have my salary and my apartment? My life?”

Her mother nodded. “They would. You’re right. But it’s not the way you grew up. It’s not what you expected from life…It’s not what you want, not long term.”

“So I need a husband to bail me out? I need an additional income stream as Dad would put it?” Karen sat back, her arms crossed over her chest.

Her mother laughed. “Your daddy phrased it exactly that way.”

“Daddy agrees with you?” It was beyond belief.

“Look, sweetheart, you’re an artist, and a very good one. I knew you would love to paint when I saw the expression on your face the first time you picked up a brush. Critics rave about your work and buyers snap up every piece that you are willing to sell. I’m thrilled you enjoy
your work at the museum. I would hate it if you ever needed to leave your job or to put away your brushes, but your salary and your sales simply do not provide enough for the life you want, the one you deserve.” Her mother sipped her wine and shifted her position, leaning back, matching Karen’s posture.

“If you would produce prints of your paintings, prints with mass appeal, there might be no problem, but you won’t. If you had fallen in love with medicine, with law, with finance even, money might not be an issue, but you didn’t.”

“But, Mom…”

“You need a husband to provide for you.”

“But if I don’t love him…” Karen held out her hands, appealing to her for support.

“Love is absolutely wonderful, sweetie, but it doesn’t pay the bills.”

Karen glared at her, but her mother continued.

“You’re lonely, sweetheart.”

“I’m not—”

“I’m talking, remember? Or trying to.” Her mother smiled. Karen sighed and nodded.

“You’re lonely. I know you have friends. Kimi, Vicky, and Pam are all good friends, but Vicky and Pam are married—Pam just recently, but still. Emily Stuart is getting married next spring. You sit at home by yourself. You go to parties by yourself.”

“When have I ever…?”

“Who is taking you to the gala when your Monet exhibit opens in two weeks?”

Karen dropped her eyes, staring at the table.

“You. Need. A. Husband.” Her mother drew out the sentence, emphasizing each word.

Karen looked up, her eyes narrowed. “So you have a plan.”

“I do.” Her mother smiled as she nodded. “Speaking of the Stuarts…Remember last week, when we had lunch at the Grill? With Elizabeth Stuart.”

Karen nodded. She’d felt as if Ms. Stuart was grilling her.

“You know her daughter, Emily, but she also has a son.”

“Yes…and?”

“Mark is a professor at the college, you know. A math professor.”
“A math professor? You want me to…to marry a math professor?” Her mother’s suggestion made less sense than would a declaration that the sky be purple.

Her mother ignored her. “He’s very nice, unmarried…”

“Take me now,” Karen whispered, closing her eyes and bowing her head as if in prayer.

“…and he has agreed to go out with you.”

Book Shelf: End Game by Lisa Swallow

He’s my knight in shining armour, but not the romantic kind a girl dreams about. This one invaded my online world and threw everything into chaos.

My sorcerer can kick his ass in the game, but real life kicks mine. Gaining experience points online is easier than in reality, and when I play, I know where my quests lead. In the real world, the storylines confuse me, and I don’t know which direction I’m heading in.

In the game, I’m in control.

Or I was until he arrived.

This guy never shares anything about himself, and I only know him as 'Thorsday'. My Aussie gaming nemesis can't be a blond haired, blue-eyed god in reality.

Can he?

There’s something about this enigmatic man that intrigues me, and the more we play together, the bigger my desire to meet him. And I know he feels the same.

The problem is, if I allow my game world to merge with reality, I could die standing in the fire.

Romance meets LitRPG in this romantic comedy from USA Today bestselling author, Lisa Swallow. If you think geek heroes can't be hot... think again!

Review:

End Game is Lisa Swallow’s latest release and is a fun and adorable NA perfect for those who like their romances with a cheeky spark and geeky aura.

Twenty-one year old Evie loves to get lost amongst her favourite online game of sorcerers, mages and monsters. Every quest and level-up is exciting and keeps her from thinking about her day to day reality which consists of a dead-end job and no plans for the future. Until a new player joins her guild and changes everything….Aaron is arrogant, cocky and his online avatar “Thorsday” is way too good for Evie’s liking. Add to the fact Aaron’s voice is shiver-inducing and Evie finds herself wondering what the often infuriating player from the other side of the country is like in real life. When the opportunity arises for the two of them to finally meet, Aaron and Evie can’t deny the attraction that simmers between them, but with distance and Aaron’s determination to keep his secrets to himself threatening their budding romance, will Evie manage to snag her knight in shining armour? Or is she destined for nothing but heartache?

I have to admit this is my first novel by Lisa Swallow I’ve read but it definitely won’t be the last. Fun and light, End Game was a flirty and endearing novel that appealed to the geek in me. As a lover of sci-fi and fantasy myself, I could emphasise with Evie and her friends and their love for Comic-Cons and nerd-like things. I’m a fair geek myself—and though I’ve never played an online game personally, I’m in attendance at every Comic-Con or Supanova in Sydney, so I could completely envision the well depicted and explained events Swallow included in End Game.

Evie was a down to earth heroine and easy to follow. She had a quirky personality and a defiant flair. As someone with somewhat similar likes to Evie, I enjoyed seeing her fan-girl over the latest pop-culture fads and elements out there. Evie and even the whole story was very relevant to me as someone who enjoys this stuff too. I felt like I was reading a story about a friend; someone with similar likes and tastes, and this made for easy empathy.

Lisa Swallow gives Evie a love interest in the form of Aaron, a “Mr Hemsworth” look-alike. I liked he was cheeky in his own right and complimented Evie. Aaron is very much a mystery outside of the game for the majority of End Game—just the way he likes it—until things force him to confront and admit to Evie his past. Personally I felt bad for Aaron and all he had gone through, but couldn’t deny that his inability to explain was the cause of most of the angst between him and Evie.

Filled with unique and quirky characters as Evie’s friends, Lisa Swallow leaves me interested to see if she turns this tale into a part of a series and explores some of the other characters we met. I’d love to see Tyler and Erin and Cole have their own tales—they were great to read about.

An enjoyable and easy to read novel, End Game was entertaining and leaves me interested to see what Lisa Swallow releases next!

Waiting on Wednesday #192

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Markswoman by Rati Mehrotra
Releases on: January 23rd 2018
An order of magical-knife wielding female assassins brings both peace and chaos to their post-apocalyptic world in this bewitching blend of science fiction and epic fantasy—the first entry in a debut duology that displays the inventiveness of the works of Sarah Beth Durst, Marie Lu, and S. J. Kincaid

Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the Order of Kali, a highly trained sisterhood of elite warriors armed with telepathic blades. Guided by a strict code of conduct, Kyra and the other Orders are sworn to protect the people of Asiana. But to be a Markswoman, an acolyte must repudiate her former life completely. Kyra has pledged to do so, yet she secretly harbors a fierce desire to avenge her dead family.

When Kyra’s beloved mentor dies in mysterious circumstances, and Tamsyn, the powerful, dangerous Mistress of Mental Arts, assumes control of the Order, Kyra is forced on the run. Using one of the strange Transport Hubs that are remnants of Asiana’s long-lost past, she finds herself in the unforgiving wilderness of desert that is home to the Order of Khur, the only Order composed of men. Among them is Rustan, a young, disillusioned Marksman whom she soon befriends.

Kyra is certain that Tamsyn committed murder in a twisted bid for power, but she has no proof. And if she fails to find it, fails in her quest to keep her beloved Order from following Tamsyn down a dark path, it could spell the beginning of the end for Kyra--and for Asiana.

But what she doesn’t realize is that the line between justice and vengeance is razor thin . . . thin as the blade of a knife.

Thoughts:
What can I say? I love a good YA fantasy tale and Markswoman looks like a good fantasy tale. Not only is the cover pretty darn kicking, but the description ticks all my desires in a great fantasy tale. Kick-ass heroine? Check. Murder? Check. Betrayal? Check. Possible romance/love interest? Check. Check.....Bring January on because I really want to read this one!

What do you think of Markswoman? Is it something you want to read?
And what are you waiting on this Wednesday?

Review:

The Raven King is the fourth and final novel in Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle series and is a vividly told ending to a magical and whimsical series full of wonder and adventure!

All her life Blue Sargent has known that her true love would die if she ever kissed him. Her curse has never been a problem as Blue has never believed in love, but since becoming friends with Gansey, Ronan, Adam and Noah it’s become impossible not to believe in impossible things. Now Blue and the Raven Boys find themselves nearing the end of their search for a slumbering Welsh king and with strange and deadly things starting to happen in their town of Henrietta, the end by come sooner than any of them think…..

Maggie Stiefvater has always been one of my favourite authors; ever since I read her debut novel, Lament: A Faerie Queen’s Deception. Her imaginings never fail to win my heart, but I truly do believe The Raven Cycle has been the most unique and vivid creation of hers yet. Before the first novel, ley lines were something I had never heard of and now I feel like I know them and their reasoning’s better than I ever expected.

Throughout the series I’ve constantly enjoyed being swept up into tales of magic, dreams and premonitions and The Raven King is no exception, ending the series in spectacular fashion. This instalment is whimsical and full of incredible things but also dangerous and deadly with no one guaranteed to make it out alive.

I’ve loved following Blue and the boys throughout the series and seeing the story unfold in third person has always allowed for a very well rounded reading experience. I love being able to see what is going on with Ronan and then follow Blue or Gansey for a chapter. Even some of the smaller roles; Grey Man, Piper and others have helped enhance all that is going on throughout the story.

Stiefvater has created such a unique and different cast of characters within this series and I’ve loved following them all. Gansey, Ronan and Adam have a strong friendship and Blue brings more life to their dynamic. Even Henry manages to become a more focal part of the story and wins himself a place within Gansey’s group of merry men. There’s wonderful romance between Blue and Gansey who have fought the inevitable but ultimately can’t deny now they feel…..and Ronan and Adam! Totally didn’t see that coming but loved it none-the-less!

The stakes have never been higher than they have in The Raven King. Our beloved characters will have to make some tough choices and as always, Maggie Stiefvater keeps you guessing until the very end. Beautifully represented and lyrical, The Raven King is a thrilling final novel and leaves the series at a perfect place.

Bok Shelf: Her Book Boyfriend (The Awkward Duckling #1) by K. R. Grace

She believes the secret to love is in the tropes of her favorite romance novels. He’s the best friend prepared to prove her wrong.
Then comes the bet.
If she can’t land a boyfriend for prom by recreating the ten popular tropes in her favorite romance author’s books, she has to go to the prom with her.
The glitch?
They’ve been close their entire lives. He’s the rock god and school legend, while she’s the brainy sidekick who does all his dirty breakups. Thus, finding a guy who doesn’t think they’re already an item is going to be a lot harder than she thinks.
Will she land the book boyfriend of her dreams? Or will she be forced to go to prom with her best friend.
The truth is in the pages.

More info on Goodreads.....

Review:

Her Book Boyfriend is K.R. Grace’s latest release and is a delightfully charming contemporary romance that is full of entertaining moments, endearing romance and sweet moments of true friendship.

Macey Greere and Camden Davis have been best friends since they were toddlers. Cam is the rock-star player who runs through a slew of girls and Macey is the diligent best friend who lets them down when he undoubtedly tires of them. High school graduation is nearing and Macey wants to experience a bit of romance herself, so she sets out to follow all the tropes found in her favourite romance novels in an effort to find love. Cam is adamant that she won’t land a boyfriend that way and so a bet ensues. If Macey can’t find love using the steps in her novels, she’ll accompany him to prom. Macey is determined to secure herself a guy, and prove Cam wrong in the process, but as things don’t quite go as plan, will Macey admit defeat? Or is she about to find that the perfect boyfriend was closer than she thought the whole time?

From beginning to end, I found Her Book Boyfriend to be a really sweet and easy to read novel. Though undoubtedly predictable, Her Book Boyfriend manages to be a quick, highly entertaining YA that charms you with its quirky characters and charming friendships. Featuring a best-friends romance, Her Book Boyfriend unfolds through Macey’s POV and will appeal to book lovers who have always wondered if finding love is as simple as they make it sound in books.

Macey was an intelligent, sharp individual who embraced her intellect and was a lover of books; something that allowed me to emphasise with her as a fellow book lover myself. Personally I think Macey’s approach to landing a boyfriend was somewhat superficial and unnecessary, but I highly enjoyed watching her stumble along with each encounter as she attempted to find someone she wanted to be with.

It really was a case of seeing what was before your eyes all along with Her Book Boyfriend. I think it was safe to say heading into the novel it’s almost guaranteed that Mace and Cam will end up together by the end of the story, but I was surprised to see how long it took for them to actually cross over to more than friends. Even though it’s obvious there’s something there, the fact it took until the final few chapters for something to really occur almost made the ending feel too rushed in my eyes.

That being said, I really did enjoy this story. Macey and Camden had a great bunch of friends and I loved that the author includes so much family interactions with their families as well. Overall, Her Book Boyfriend was a fun and flirty read that was highly addictive and every enjoyable reading!
