Waiting on Wednesday #208

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Defy the Worlds by Claudia Gray
Releases: April 3rd 2018

Noemi Vidal has returned to her planet, Genesis, as an outsider. Ostracized for refusing to sacrifice Abel, the galaxy's most advanced mechanical man, she dreams of traveling through the stars one more time. And when a deadly plague arrives on Genesis, Noemi gets her chance. As the only soldier to have ever left the planet, it will be up to her to save its people...if only she wasn't flying right into a trap.

Abel, now fully aware of his soul and captaining his own ship, never thought he'd get to see Noemi again, not when the entire universe stands between them. But when his creator, Burton Mansfield, delivers news of Noemi's capture, Abel must go to her, no matter the cost.

In a race against time, Abel and Noemi band together to stop Mansfield once and for all. The depraved scientist has engineered a way to achieve immortality, but that technology comes with perils of its own. Abel and Noemi are about to discover a secret that could save Genesis and Earth...or destroy them all.

Thoughts:
The predecessor to this novel, Defy the Stars was one of my absolutely favourite books of 2017 and I'm SOOOOOOOO excited to read this sequel! The ending of Defy the Stars actually had me scared for a while as I wasn't sure if it was a standalone or not and I just couldn't handle Noemi and Abel's story ending as it did. Can't wait to see what Claudia Gray does with book #2---just know it's going to be epic!

Have you read the first book Defy the Stars?
And what are YOU waiting on this week?

Owl Post #198

Inspired by The Story Siren's In My Mailbox, Owl Post allows us bloggers to showcase the books we've bought, won or received throughout the week and is hosted by Brodie over at Eleusinian Mysteries. We all know that the Owl Post is the fastest way to send and receive mail and they certainly make me happy every time they drop a book off.

Hello booklovers and welcome to the first Owl Post of 2018! Can you believe we're in 2018?!?! I certainly can't; time is just going too quick!
It's been a while since I've shared an Owl Post. My last was in November I think, so I've got a few books to share with you today :)

For Review:
From Hot Keys Books/Allen & Unwin:
-  The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
This seems to be a highly anticipated novel in the bookish community and I've enjoyed Holly's novels in the past so I'm defintely looking forward to diving into this one.

....Thank you guys!
 ______________________________

From Bloomsbury:
-   Libby in the Middle by Gwyneth Rees
 - The Firefly Code by Megan Frazer Blakemore
Both of these novels seem directed to the younger audience, so I'm not sure how likely I'll actually read them although I am more likely to try The Firefly Code if I'm being honest as it seems more my style.

.....Thank you guys!

I Bought:
-  Gilded Cage by Vic James
I read Gilded Cage in ARC form but received a finished copy of book two for review so I wanted to get myself a finished copy of book one too.

-  Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
I originally read Three Dark Crowns via Netgalley and seeing as I just got a copy of book two, this was another one I wanted to have a physical copy of.

-  The Becoming of Noah Shaw by Michelle Hodkin
I about fell off my chair when I heard Michelle Hodkin was writing more novels featuring Mara and Noah and simply HAD to get a copy asap. Can't wait to read this!

-  Unearthed by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
One of my favourite series is the Starbound trilogy so words cannot say how excited to read this duo's latest novel together. Seriously. Soooooooo excited! Oh and this edition is SIGNED by both authors from their Australian tour which I unfortunately wasn't able to go to :( Still, signed book so very happy!

-  One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake
My brother kind of broke the "no buying Rachel books for Christmas" rule we have in our house and gave me a QBD voucher for Christmas that I got this and Renegades with :) Looking forward to reading this!

-  Renegades by Marissa Meyer
Renegades totally makes me think of Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson so I'm excited to read it. Sounds really good.

-  Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
-  The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore
-  Bewitching by Alex Flinn
-  Hidden by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast
-  The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
I LOVE going to second hand/charity stores and raiding their book departments. I always manage to find some great second hand books in brilliant condition for next to nothing. I've been meaning to get a copy of Night Circus for a while and found this HARDBACK for $4 is freaking PERFECT condition! Score. I've also been wanting to give Fangirl a go for a while and I enjoy Alex Flinn so I'm looking forward to reading Bewitching as I loved Beastly.

- Divine by Blood by P.C. Cast
- Divine by Choice by P.C. Cast
- Divine by Mistake by P.C. Cast
-  Model Misfit by Holly Smale
- Bitter Blood by Rachel Caine
- Alpha by Rachel Vincent
More books from charity stores. Bitter Blood and Alpha were $2 while the read were all $1.50. I mean come on; they're perfect, no marks, no tears, no cracks in the spines even--had to get them.

- Magnus Chase and the Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan
-  Geekerella by Ashley Poston
-  Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
- Silver Silence by Nalini Singh
So. Target had a 20% off after Christmas sale.....what's a girl to do!?!? I had to get some bookish goodness including the two Rick Riordan latests, Geekerella and Nevermoor which I'm looking forward to reading. Silver Silence I had on pre-order though and it arrived during the Christmas break. Great book; I was actually reading it via Netgalley when the paperback arrived lol.

And that's me! Quite a few novels I bought and am looking forward to reading.
What did the owls bring you recently? Let me know in the comments!

Book Shelf: On the Plus Side (A Perfect Fit #2) by Alison Bliss

The second book in a laugh-out-loud new contemporary romance series from Alison Bliss!

Big girls don't cry. They go after what they want.

Thanks to her bangin' curves, Valerie Carmichael has always turned heads-with the exception of seriously sexy Logan Mathis. Just Valerie's luck that the object of her lust-filled affection is also best friends with her overprotective brother. But Valerie's determined to get Logan's attention . . . even if it means telling a teeny little lie to get a job at his new bar.

Logan can't remember a time when Valerie didn't secretly fuel all his hottest fantasies. Now the curvaceous she-devil is working behind his bar, tempting him every damn night. It's only when he finds Valerie's naughty things-to-do list that Logan decides to break every rule in the book-by making each red-hot deed a reality.

No one warned them that they were going to fall this hard. And no one warned them that sometimes the smallest secrets can have the biggest consequences.

Review:

On the Plus Side is the second novel in Alison Bliss’s A Perfect Fit series and this time features the previously introduced character Valarie and the man she has secretly wanted for years.

Valarie Carmichael has always had feelings for her older brother Brett’s best friend. As a teenager, her crush seemed unreciprocated and unattainable, especially when the man in question left town without a word and has only just returned after eight years. Logan was the only man Valarie’s sexy curves and vibrant personality wasn’t able to win, but the years apart haven’t changed the way he makes her feel. Logan Mathis has returned to his hometown of Granite, Texas in the hopes of saving his mother’s home that is about to be foreclosed on. The plan is simple; open a bar and make enough money to get her out of trouble. He certainly wasn’t expecting Valarie to ignite a different kind of trouble in his life…..Logan has always forced himself to avoid acting on the raging attraction he feels for his best friends little sister, but Valarie isn’t a little girl anymore. Beautiful, mouthy and determined, Valarie makes him burn hotter than ever before. Getting involved with her may be a bad idea but as the two find themselves working together at Logan’s bar, they’re about to discover that neither can deny what simmers between them….

On the Plus Side is another fun and flirty contemporary romance from Alison Bliss. As with the first novel, On the Plus Side features likable characters, funny dialogue and plenty of sensual and saucy moments between the love interests that bring the romance to life. Unfolding in the varying POV’s of main characters Valarie and Logan, On the Plus Side offers readers a well-rounded story with plenty of entertaining moments.

Valarie was a confidant and capable young woman. I appreciated that Alison Bliss wrote her comfortable in her own skin and didn’t focus too much around what she weighted, unlike previous main character Leah who had a lot of insecurities where her weight was concerned. Logan too was a solid male lead and I thought he and Valarie were sexy and thrilling together.

A solid read from beginning to end, On the Plus Side was another enjoyable contemporary romance. I’m hoping we have a chance to see Valarie’s brother Brett feature in a story down the track and am looking forward to seeing Max star in the next instalment!

Book Shelf: The Black Witch (The Black Witch Chronicles #1) by Laurie Forest

A new Black Witch will rise…her powers vast beyond imagining.

Elloren Gardner is the granddaughter of the last prophesied Black Witch, Carnissa Gardner, who drove back the enemy forces and saved the Gardnerian people during the Realm War. But while she is the absolute spitting image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren joins her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University to embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother's legacy. But she soon realizes that the university, which admits all manner of people—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of all Gardnerians—is a treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

As evil looms on the horizon and the pressure to live up to her heritage builds, everything Elloren thought she knew will be challenged and torn away. Her best hope of survival may be among the most unlikely band of misfits…if only she can find the courage to trust those she's been taught to hate and fear.

Review:

The Black Witch is Laurie Forest’s debut novel and is an exciting new fantasy tale that launches a promising series and offers readers the opportunity to fall in love with a new world of danger, magic and unexpected alliances.

Elloren Gardener is the granddaughter of the last Black Witch, Carnissa Gardener who destroyed her people’s enemies and brought victory to the Gardnerian race during the Realm War. Every Gardnerian knows Carnissa’s name and as the splitting image of her late grandmother, Elloren lives in her infamous shadow. Raised alongside her brothers in isolation by her eccentric uncle, Elloren is nothing like Carnissa, for she has no magic at all. When a visit by her estranged aunt sees Elloren given the opportunity to pursue her dream of studying apothecary, Elloren travels to a renowned University to study alongside her brothers. Living amongst other races for the first time in her life, everything Elloren thought she knew about herself and her people slowly begins to unravel and with evil looming, will Elloren have the strength to do what’s right even at her own cost?

After a slow and turbulent beginning, I surprised myself by absolutely falling in love with The Black Witch. A large novel with 600 plus pages, the first 200 pages of The Black Witch were a real struggle for me as I couldn’t seem to connect or care much for the characters and story. From about that 200 page mark however the remainder of the novel absolutely flew by for me; and I thoroughly enjoyed what I read. Laurie Forest held me entranced by her world and especially many of the minor characters the heroine Elloren had the pleasure of meeting and interacting throughout the story.

The world within The Black Witch is very intricate with a lot of difference branches that bring it to life. The Gardnerian society make up a large part of what we see within The Black Witch but Laurie Forest also introduces her own version of shifters, fae, Amazon warriors, demon-like creatures, and selkies among others. Admittedly it is a lot to take in at times and it took me a while to become comfortable with such a vast array of races and characters, but eventually I came to love all the different groups and what they brought to the story.

The protagonist in The Black Witch Elloren begins the novel as a somewhat naïve individual, especially where the true nature and the true way of her people are concerned. At her heart she’s actually quite kind and soft so as The Black Witch progresses, Elloren begins to learn the truth about the world around her and has her eyes opened to the suffering and treatment of others. Watching Elloren take chances and do the right thing is really uplifting and honestly endears her to me.

I adored all the minor characters Laurie Forest introduces in this novel. Admittedly there are a lot of them and though you might be forgiven for thinking there is too many, each and every one seems to bring something new to the story. From Elloren’s brothers Rafe and Trystan, to Lupine’s Jarod and Diana, brooding and mysterious Yvan, fellow Gardnerian and sweetheart Ashlenn, Icarels Wynter and Ariel, Gypsie boy Andras and even Wynter’s Fae brothers….I loved them all, especially when they were interacting and working together; they all made such a fabulous team.

The Black Witch is also full of blossoming romances, both forbidden and endearing. As the novel progresses, Forest begins to pair off many of the characters. Not that I’m complaining as I really am a romantic at heart. Personally I really enjoyed seeing some of the relationships develop. I won’t give away any spoilers, but Diana’s comfortability in her own skin and self-assurance made me smile as did her unwavering determination to be with who she wanted. I also think there are the potential for more pairings—I don’t know why but I think Ariel and Andras would be an intriguing pairing with plenty of possibility. She’s crazy, but I think he could handle her nature better than anyone else.

There was honestly so much about The Black Witch that I ended up loving and I genuinely did not want to put the book down whilst reading. I’m still thinking about the story now, long after I’ve turned the final page. I will definitely be looking to read the next novel as soon as it is released! Can’t wait to see what Laurie Forest does next this this thrilling series with so much potential!

From The Wishing Heart....

“Hand it over, pigeon.” The officer gestured to her bag.

Rebel sighed. How ironic. Could her life get any worse? “As you can see, I’m poorer than a vagabond.” She gazed down at herself. “There’s nothing in my bag except my hopeless dreams.”

“Is that why it looks so heavy?” His lips curved into a grin, and his teeth gleamed against his beard. He was a beast of man, his vast shoulders pushing the uniform to its absolute limit. “Don’t be foolish. Give it here, girl.”

“Woman. You hobnocker,” she spat, in no mood.

A chuckle vibrated in his throat. “Skinner said you were a spitfire and a slippery grift.”

Rebel stiffened as awareness caught up to her, the satchel heavy at her side. He was no officer. Even worse, this had trap written all over it. But was it Skinner’s trap, or whoever had been on the other end of that phone call— someone even more brutal? Her eyes darted about, scouting an escape. Nothing good ever happened when a girl was snatched off the streets from a henchman twice her size.

The man glanced at her satchel. “I’ll be taking that now.”

When in doubt, distract. “Fancy outfit just to rob me of a vase? You’re not overcompensating for something, are you?”

“Don’t play stupid. The vessel’s not the prize, we want what’s inside it.”

Rebel squinted. “There’s nothing inside it, you tool.”

“Wrong answer.” He growled, sounding more animal than man, and something changed in his features. His eyes glowed amber in an extremely inhuman face.

“What the…” She lurched back, her nose twitched at an odd scent, and dizziness emerged. Now wasn’t the time for her heart to hamper reality. “This has got to be the weirdest panic attack.”

“No attack, unless you refuse.” The man inched closer.

“Touch me and I’ll carve Repent on your chest.” Rebel fumbled at her belt, grasping the bone handle of her switchblade. She never actually used it on anyone, never wanted to.

“All’s we want is the vessel,” he warned. “There’s no need for it to go there.”

“You don’t want it to go there,” said another.

Shadows moved out from behind the man.
A young female appeared, followed by a male version of her, both cloaked in animal-hide coats. The twins’ blood- red hair spilled over their shoulders like lions’ manes, the girl’s pelt trimmed in fur of equal shade. As they moved, between one second and the next, they shifted into a wave of rippling fur. Bones snapped out of place, and jet-black muzzles emerged from their faces, until they formed into four-footed shapes. Their backs contorted, and slowly, bone plates elongated down their spines like an armadillo’s shield.

They were not human. Not even close.

Werewolves.

“Wolves?” she voiced it aloud.

“Lycanthrope,” the man corrected. His eyes burned like embers as his ears tapered skyward, and his vastness seemed to increase compared to the others. Obviously, the alpha. “A thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf. Didn’t legends ever teach you about the big bad one?”
