Book Shelf: Rose Petal Graves (The Lost Clan #1) by Olivia Wildenstein

ANCIENT SECRETS CANNOT REMAIN BURIED FOREVER.

Founded two centuries ago by a powerful tribe of Gottwa Indians, Rowan was a quiet town, so quiet that I fled after graduation. Staying away was the plan, but Mom died suddenly.

Dad said she suffered a stroke after she dug up one of the ancient graves in our backyard, which happens to be the town cemetery. Creepy, I know. Creepier still, there was no corpse inside the old coffin, only fresh rose petals.

As we made preparations for Mom’s burial, new people began arriving in Rowan, unnervingly handsome and odd people. I begged them to leave, but they stayed, because their enemies—my ancestors—were beginning to awaken.

Review:

Rose Petal Graves by Olivia Wildenstein is a thoroughly entertaining and a delightfully unique blend of Native American folklore and fae mythology. A sharp, well written and at times emotional read guaranteed to entrance from beginning to tend.

Founded centuries before by a powerful Native American tribe, the small town of Rowan is where college student Catori “Cat” Price grew up, the daughter of the town’s undertaker and funeral director. Studying medicine in Boston, Cat finds herself returning hom after the heartbreaking death of her mother. Cat’s family are struggling to deal with their unexpected loss, while Cat is determined to prove her mother’s death wasn’t of natural causes. When the young medical examiner arrives to examine her mother, Cat’s senses start telling her the handsome young man isn’t who he appears and as Cat begins to delve into her family’s Native Gottwa roots in an effort to learn the truth about her mother’s death, she’ll discover some shocking truths about the town of Rowan and the creatures whose history is as tied to Rowan as they are her own…..

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by Rose Petal Graves. Heading into the novel, I wasn’t sure what to expect as the description doesn’t give too much away but I have to say, I really loved the story I discovered within its pages. I’m a big faerie lover and Rose Petal Graves was a fresh and exciting take on them in my mind. Olivia Wildenstein weaves together some unique faerie abilities with Native American folklore and imagined history in this story—it made for some really interesting reading.

Cat is a strong and likable main character to follow who is understandably grief stricken from her recent loss, but also very fiery as she navigates this new supernatural world she’s discovering and the dangers that come with it.

Weaving a lot of mystery into the story as Cat uncovers the truth about her mother’s death and Rowan’s history, Wildenstein introduces a whole cast of different characters from all walks of life. Something I really loved about this novel, is the way Olivia Wildenstein really made me care about all the characters in the novel as Cat finds herself questioning who are the good and who are the bad guys.

With the ancient hunters and fae at war with one another, Cat interacts with both sides of the divide and Wildenstein writes them all very complex and complicated where you as the reader find yourself liking, emphasing and understanding everyone involved. Cruz won me over very quickly, but then so did Ace who continues to be the “bad” boy and appears untrustworthy while continuing to do things that surprise you as the reader. And then there’s Kajika whose very existence cost Cat someone she loved and yet whose story is so very heart breaking.

There’s moments of romance between Cat and two of the three men who are becoming focal points in her life, although I couldn’t help but detect chemistry between her, Cruz, Kijika and Ace. Normally some kind of love triangle is my worst nightmare, but in Rose Petal Graves, I loved all three of the guys so I’m finding it really hard to pick someone I would prefer Cat to choose. That being said, at this point it could go either way and it’s too soon to really pinpoint where Cat’s heart is leaning……I’m eager to see what happens down the track as my heart already hurts for all those involved.

Mysterious and intriguing, Rose Petal Graves is a highly entertaining read that will impress you with its unique fae mythology and leave you ready for more. A great read—I can’t wait to see what Olivia Wildenstein has in store in the sequel!

Book Shelf: Cream of the Crop (Hudson Valley #2) by Alice Clayton

Manhattan’s It Girl, Natalie Grayson, has it all: she’s a hot exec at a leading advertising firm, known industry-wide for her challenging and edgy campaigns. She’s got a large circle of friends, a family that loves her dearly, and her dance card is always full with handsome eligible bachelors. What else could a modern gal-about-town wish for? The answer, of course, is...cheese.

Natalie’s favorite part of each week is spending Saturday morning at the Union Square Farmer’s Market, where she indulges her love of all things triple cream. Her favorite booth also indulges her love of all things handsome. Oscar Mendoza, owner of the Bailey Falls Creamery and purveyor of the finest artisanal cheeses the Hudson Valley has to offer, is tall, dark, mysterious, and a bit oblivious. Or so she thinks. But that doesn’t stop Natalie from fantasizing about the size of his, ahem, milk can.

Romance is churning, passion is burning, and something incredible is rising to the top. Could it be...love?

Review:

Cream of the Crop is the second novel in Alice Clayton’s Hudson Valley series and is another delightfully sensual and humourful novel full of witty dialogue, saucy moments and wonderfully developed romance.

Natalie Grayson is a born city girl and can’t imagine why anyone would ever set foot outside the concrete jungle of Manhattan, even if she’s always secretly fantasised about giving up her successful job at an ad agency and run away to become a cheesemaker. Her love of cheese saw her attend and then drop out of culinary school in collage where she met her best friend Roxie, and now has her tongue tied over the hottest cheesemaker this side of the Hudson. Dairy farmer Oscar Mendoza is the owner of Bailey Falls Creamery and is tall, dark, handsome, covered in tattoos and seemingly oblivious of Natalie’s crush. Indulging herself every weekend at the Farmers Market where Oscar has a stall is a weekly treat for Natalie, even if she can’t seem to get out more than two words to the mysterious farmer. When a possible ad campaign for Bailey Falls lands in Natalie’s lap, will this be the opportunity for Natalie to finally sample more of Oscar’s wares; the ones she has naughty dreams about at night? And will the city girl and country boy simmer, or curdle?

Ahhhh, another great Alice Clayton novel. I mean, how does she do it? It’s like the woman doesn’t have a bad book in her. As addictive as the first novel, Cream of the Crop sports all the sassy dialogue, laugh out loud and witty banter Clayton is famous for, as well as her sexy as sin romances.

Cream of the Crop features a likable main couple and plenty of sensuality and sexual tension. As well as saucy and steamy sex scenes. I liked that Natalie was a strong, confidant woman. Sure, she’d experienced difficulties with her body imagine in the past and had been through a lot to get where she was, but I liked that she was a bigger girl, not afraid to embrace her curves. And I loved that Oscar not only appreciated her body, but was particularly entranced by it. There’s nothing hotter than a man who appreciates a more curvaceous figure in his woman.

As far as the entertainment factor goes, Clayton hits the nail on the head every time. There’s nothing about this book that isn’t enjoyable and entrancing and like all Clayton tales, I loved every minute of it. It was wonderful following a new romance, but seeing the other characters back too with Roxie, Leo and the adorable Polly appearing in the tale.

I think the set up for the next novel featuring Clara and Archie is perfect and am dying to see what Alice Clayton has in store with the third book Buns. I’m sure it’ll be as good as the first two and then some!

Funny, flirty and wonderfully entertaining, Cream of the Crop is a delightful read you won’t regret devouring!

Review:

Grail is the superbly action packed and exciting third instalment in Realm Lovejoy’s Le Fay series and continues Morgan’s harrowing and breathtaking adventures as she fights to protect Camelot and King Arthur from forces of evil!

Morgan le Fay is the most hated person in all of Camelot. And yet, despite being in prison for treason and acts against the crown, Morgan is the only person who knows the truth….King Arthur isn’t safe and the deadly Luminaries are determined to overthrow the boy king. Despised and scorned, Morgan is still determined to protect Arthur, even if it means accepting her role as outcast and the humiliation it brings, but when Morgan finds herself on a mission to find the greatest Royal Relic in the world, the Grail, will it be her past that is Camelot’s ultimate ruin?

Realm Lovejoy never fails to keep me highly entertained with this sensational series and Grail is absolutely no exception to this rule! Picking up where the previous book, Sword, left off, Grail depicts how far Morgan has fallen. Strong willed and passionate, our beloved heroine made difficult choices in the last book that have seen her scored and ridiculed, cast aside and now perceived as a criminal. For one such as Morgan, this affects her deeply and as Grail unfolds, it’s a daily struggle for Morgan to find the inner strength to continue on. Yet being the powerful person she is, Morgan pushes on and along the way begins to slowly rebuild her life.

I loved the way Realm Lovejoy is developing Morgan. Morgan is a highly likable character and there’s a lot going on within the series that impact heavily on her. As secrets are revealed and heritages discovered, Morgan changes and adapts and I like that she struggles, that she feels, and though she doesn’t always react the way a rational person should, it’s nice to see her beginning to accept her limitations.

Despite being the third book in a series, Grail continues to keep up the high excitement and storyline development, while managing to maintain its own individual tale focusing around Morgan’s hunt for the Grail and the threat against Arthur.

Filled with all the great Le Fay characters; Merlin, Lancelot, Arthur and more, Grail is another great instalment in a thrilling series and ends a chapter in Morgan’s journey while leaving me dying to see what happens next!

Waiting on Wednesday #170

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows
Releases on: September 26th 2017

Before

Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.

But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

After

Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.

No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse.

Jodi Meadows’s new Fallen Isles series blazes with endangered magic, slow-burn romance, and inner fire.

Thoughts:
Alright, so I'm going to be honest and say that vainly, the first thing that caught my attention about this book was it's cover. I mean, come on?!? It's gorgeous! But damn does the description sound good too. I haven't had a chance to read anything by Jodi Meadows yet, but Before She Ignites may just change all that!

What do you think of Before She Ignites?
And what are you waiting on this week?
