“Set has risen.”

After being on the run from a psychotic cult for a week, Natara “Natti” Stone has finally come to realize she and Seth are the only two people standing between the Sons of Set and the secret name of Ra. Holding a part of the key that unlocks Ra’s power, they relocate to a more isolated location in the California mountains. While laying low, Natti becomes even more determined to understand her mother’s bloodline and her blessing from the goddess, Isis. But when she starts seeing the truth behind her destiny, she begins to doubt her role in the events that are about to unfold.

Then the unthinkable happens . . .

All Seth O’Keefe wanted was to get Natti as far away from his father and the Sons of Set as possible. Unfortunately, after hearing of Natti’s destiny from Isis’s own lips, he realizes they have bigger issues to worry about. Especially when one stupid slip up leads the god of chaos himself straight to their doorstep. Now Natti is the god’s prisoner, and Set holds the key to unlocking the location of the secret name of Ra. Can Seth save Natti from her own destiny and thwart the demented god’s rise to power?

Character Profile: Anubis

Name: Anubis
Age: Ageless
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Amber
Social Standing: God
Power: Transfiguration, telepathic, super strength, reading people's hearts
Closest Friends: Horus, Bastet, and Ma'at
Relationship(s): Ma at (his one and only; unrequited love)

Likes:
Flirting. For the god of the underworld, Anubis is lively, and he appreciates beauty. And he shows his appreciating through both appropriate and slightly inappropriate means. He particularly likes taking advantage of his jackal form and his puppy like demeanor.

Teaching. It's like second nature to Anubis, showing mortals the path to eternity. Yet teaching Natti how to use the power of Ma at is most thrilling. Especially since Natti reminds him of the goddess he loves.

Teasing. Anubis is a bit of a teaser. It goes hand in hand with his flirting, especially when he's around Natti. He cares for her . He doesn't know why. Maybe it's because she looks like Isis. Maybe it's because her heart carries a piece of Ma'at's power. Or maybe it's because she understands his taunts and jokes. Whatever the reason, she makes him feel relaxed.

Dislikes:
Set. Especially considering what he did to Anubis's mother, Nephthys. After all, it was his darkness and torment that drove her to Osiris disguised as Isis to copulate, giving birth to Anubis nine months later. He believes his uncle is nothing but a monster, and his followers aren't any better. Not even Seth O'Keefe.

Rejection. Despite his flirting and teasing, his heart only belongs to one goddess, Ma'at. Unfortunately, his love is unrequited. The goddess continually eluding his advances by using their age difference as her excuse. Seriously? What s a few hundred years between gods?

Contradiction. Though he is nothing like his uncle, Set, they do share some parallel traits. His quick temper to contradiction is one. He is a god, after all. He had been living for thousands of year. So how dare a mortal contradict his opinion and teachings?

Quote: "Just don't go making a habit of it. Exposing your heart to such darkness will only poison it. You will lose yourself to the very same emotions that enslaves all Sons of Set to their god."

Review:

Name of Ra is the third and final novel in Kelsey Ketch’s Descendants of Isis trilogy and brings the series to a powerful and endlessly exciting conclusion!

After the events of Son of Set, Natti and Seth are on the run. Having rescued the woman he loves from being a sacrifice to the god Set, Seth is keen to keep Natti as far away from the Sons of Set as possible. Yet when Set rises and manages to take Natti prisoner, Seth and Natti find themselves in a race against time, not only to get Natti out of the evil God’s clutches, but to stop Set from discovering Ra’s secret name and obtaining untold power. Trapped as Set’s prisoner, Natti is subjected to the god’s attempts at seduction, and must come to embrace her true destiny, lest she be tricked into becoming Set’s queen and seeing him rule the world…..

I must say, I have enjoyed reading this series and will be sad to see it go. Kelsey Ketch has done a great job weaving together her world, and I’ve enjoyed seeing the story unfold through both Natti and Seth’s eyes. Well written, Descendants of Isis has been a fast paced and exciting series, although a lot of the content wouldn’t be suitable for a younger YA audience due to the sexual themes and situations depicted in the books.

Having been to hell and back, Name of Ra is the final chance for Natti and Seth to stand against Set and stop him from taking control of untold power. Personally I think both Natti and Seth have come a long way in this series; especially Seth who grew up in the Sons of Set who believed women were their playthings and who took what they wanted, when they wanted. It was only through loving Natti that Seth came to realise just how wrong most of his actions were, and I think this really helped shape who he is by the end of this book.

A lot of history comes to light in Name of Ra, and much of what Natti’s mother and Seths ancestors went through fall into place. We discover the meaning behind the prophecies surrounding Natti and finally discover just what Isis meant for her all along. Stakes have never been as high for our two lovers are they are in Name of Ra, and I have to give Kelsey Ketch props—she really makes you feel their desperation. Especially towards the end and once they are in the clutches of Set, considering he has the ability to do unspeakable things to Natti. It’s very powerful to read about, especially when tragedy strikes.

Fast paced, exciting and riveting, Name of Ra is a great way to conclude the series. I’m sad to say goodbye to Natti and Seth, but I’m thrilled with the way Kesley Ketch brings this series to a close and am thoroughly glad I’ve taken the time to read these books!

Book Shelf: The Substitute (The Wedding Pact #1) by Denise Grover Swank

The first book in a humorous contemporary romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

Review:

The Substitute by Denise Grover Swank is a fun, feel good romance that kicks off a promising contemporary series from Swank titled The Wedding Pact and takes readers on a fresh, enjoyable adventure that sees two people brought together through fate and falling in love……

The Substitute is one of those novels that’s just plain fun and is sure to please those like myself who are hopeless romantics. The Substitute has such a feel-good aura to it that reminds me of a good rom-com that you can’t help but get lost in.

Told through varying POV’s, The Substitute introduces readers to Megan Vandemeer, a young woman who finds herself boarding a plane to head home for her wedding….a wedding she doesn’t see going ahead considering she and her fiancé broke up weeks before. Still too terrified to tell her parents despite the big day looming, Megan drowns her worries in couple of drinks that mixed with the motion sickness tablets she takes prior to boarding, see her spill her secret to the handsome stranger she’s seated next on the plan…..a stranger with a secret of his own.

Josh McMillan is willing to do anything to save his late father’s business, even if it means racing across the country on a crazy scheme not guaranteed to succeed, but when he finds himself helping the beautiful woman seated next to him, the last thing he expects is to be caught up in an even more crazier plan. Mistaken for her fiancé, Josh and Megan must figure out how to convince her family they're a real couple before a planned break up that will save Megan a whole lot of pain and embarrassment. Yet when the lies begin to feel real and Megan and Josh begin to fall for each other, will Josh’s secrets be the thing that tears them apart?

With solid writing and a fantastic pace, the storyline within The Substitute is really entertaining. I mean, it sounds like something out of a fantastic romantic movie, and Denise Grover Swank never fails to keep you smiling and laughing with this story. Featuring two lovely main characters and an endearing storyline, The Substitute is littered with a great cast of supporting characters that give it life. From Megan’s hilarious Gram who has a fondness for nudity, her mother who loves nothing more than order and schedules and her best friends who both help and hinder her and Josh’s developing relationship—you’ll want to get to know them all!

There’s no denying that Megan and Josh’s relationship moves fast and hard. Two people—complete strangers—falling in love over a matter of a few days seems a bit farfetched, but it’s really hard to be put off while reading The Substitute by this fact. Megan and Josh spend a lot of time together and do actually get to know one another; building on the initial attraction between them. If you enjoy the idea of love at first sight, true love or just simply knowing when you meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, then you’ll appreciate Josh and Megan’s relationship. Just like I did!

Sweetly told and entertaining, The Substitute is a great contemporary read that will definitely entertain. Having been introduced to Blair and Libby, the leading ladies in the second and third books, I’m looking forward to continuing on with The Wedding Pact series and seeing them find their HEA’s also!

Book Shelf: One by Sarah Crossan

Grace and Tippi are twins - conjoined twins. And their lives are about to change. No longer able to afford homeschooling, they must venture into the world - a world of stares, sneers and cruelty. Will they find more than that at school? Can they find real friends? And what about love? But what neither Grace or Tippi realises is that a heart-wrenching decision lies ahead. A decision that could tear them apart. One that will change their lives even more than they ever imagined...

From Carnegie Medal shortlisted author Sarah Crossan, this moving and beautifully crafted novel about identity, sisterhood and love ultimately asks one question: what does it mean to want and have a soulmate?

Review:

One is Sarah Crossan’s latest release and is a unique and beautiful tale of two sisters and their journey as conjoined twins.

Told in verse, One unfolds through the eyes of Grace, who alongside her sister Tippi make up a set of conjoined twins. At sixteen, both Grace and Tippi have been content with their existence, despite the difficulties they face in their day to day lives. Yet when lack of money sees their family no longer able to afford home-schooling, the girls are forced out of their comfort zone and must venture out into the world. Attending a normal high school opens their eyes and allows them opportunities they never had before; real friends, life experiences and maybe even love……

One really was a powerful, emotional and thought-inflicting, novel. Having read a few books by Sarah Crossan to date, I was excited about reading One, especially considering the concept is quite different and the fact it’s not what I would normally read. The prose within One is unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and though I worried heading into the novel if I would struggle, I found it easy to read and found myself flying through the story.

The idea of conjoined twins is something Sarah Crossan explores really well within One. Crossan gives both twins real personality and highlights their natural human flaws. One of the things I really appreciated about in this novel is that both girls really aren’t these meek individuals. They’re strong in the sense they understand their strengths and their weaknesses and know what they’re capable of.

Grace has a very powerful voice. It’s raw and real and doesn’t hold back. The girls are going through something really difficult and as different aspects of their lives crumble you really feel for them. It’s almost like they can’t catch a break, but the fierce way they keep their heads up and keep moving forward only endears them to you more.

Throughout One, it’s impossible not to hope for a happy ending. Grace and Tripp are beautiful teenagers making the most out of their circumstances. You really hope they’re going to make through everything Sarah Crossan throws at them and Crossan delivers a very powerful and emotional ending!

This week I'm waiting on.....

Dirty by Kylie Scott
Releases on: April 5th 2016

When Vaughn returned to his childhood home, the last thing he expected was to find a brokenhearted bride in his shower. Or the complete drama and chaos that came with her.

Lydia doesn't know what to do. Finding out the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it's with his best man, is another all together. Trying to escape it all, she runs...and finds herself in the arms of a handsome ex-musician turned bartender. Thoughts:
I'm such a fan of Kylie Scott's Stage Dive series and I can't wait to get my hot little hands on this spin-off series, starting with Dirty! We met Vaughn in Deep and I'm really looking forward to having him front and centre and finding his own HEA.

Have you read any of Kylie Scott's books? Are you waiting on Dirty too?
