Book Shelf: Play of Passion (Psy-Changeling #9) by Nalini Singh

In his position as tracker for the SnowDancer pack, it's up to Drew Kincaid to rein in rogue changelings who have lost control of their animal halves- even if it means killing those who have gone too far. But nothing in his life has prepared him for the battle he must now wage to win the heart of a woman who makes his body ignite... and who threatens to enslave his wolf.

Lieutenant Indigo Riviere doesn't easily allow skin privileges, especially of the sensual kind- and the last person she expects to find herself craving is the most wickedly playful male in the den. Everything she knows tells her to pull back before the flames burn them both to ash... but she hasn't counted on Drew's will.

Now, two of SnowDancer's most stubborn wolves find themselves playing a hot, sexy game even as lethal danger stalks the very place they call home.

Review:

Play of Passion marks the ninth book in the Psy-Changeling series so spectacularly told by Nalini Singh and is yet another deeply enjoyable, sensual and charismatic tale.

Andrew “Drew” Kincaid is known in his SnowDancer pack for his charming, easy-going, often silly nature, with few knowing he’s a talented tracker whose abilities are utilized by his alpha with sometimes deadly results. Drew is used to people underestimating him, but never has he felt the need to prove himself like he does as he prepares to convince the woman he adores to give him a go. Lieutenant Indigo Riviere is SnowDancer’s most dominate female solider. Holding a high position in the pack hierarchy, Indigo is thrown through a loop when the younger, and slightly less dominate Drew makes it clear what he wants something she never expected; her.

Play of Passion is yet another great novel by Nalini Singh. This series is so sensational to read and highly addictive. Honestly, I’ve been racing through this series, completely lost in Singh’s tactile world and luscious romances. Every development within this series seems to be so perfectly planned and explored that the result is a series of forward moving storylines set across a number of books. I love the way past characters and past developments keep coming up and are woven into each new story.

Front and centre this time around are Drew and Indigo, two strong SnowDancer members. Drew and Indigo were another pair I enjoyed reading about. Singh explores a very interesting dynamic between these two with the minor differences in their dominance levels impacting on their relationship. Indigo is four years older than Drew and holds a higher position in the pack; making their pairing one that holds difficulties where their wolves are concerned. I liked the way Singh reasoned their responses and reactions and had them resolve their issues.

I really enjoyed Drew in this novel and thought he was a real sweetie, with a charming, charismatic nature. I have to give Drew props too—even though he was younger than Indigo and less mature in many aspects, he really did know what he wanted. And it wasn’t a meaningless fling either; he was head over heels for Indigo and determined to prove to her he could be a worthy mate, something I found really sweet.

Play of Passion was another enjoyable instalment in this series and with the novel ending in a fast and edge of your seat manner, words cannot even begin to describe how excited I am to read Hawke and Sienna’s novel next! Theirs is the one I’ve been waiting for since I first began to fall in love with the series……..

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I know the exact date – February 3rd, 2013.  I ran out of reading material on my Kindle. I stared at the wall, for what seemed like hours. It was then that I had a light bulb moment.  I thought “Well, if I can’t find anything to read, I’ll just write something!”  The “something” became my first novel, Intentional.

Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
Yes and no.  I need uninterrupted time (I’m not one of those authors who can write for an hour per day) Give me four hours, and I’m good to go.  I do my best writing in the parking lot waiting for my daughter to finish her basketball practice.

Where did you get the idea or inspiration for The Reader?
I have absolutely no idea!  When I sat down to write it, the words, plot, dialogue literally flew from my fingers to the keyboard.

What books have most influenced your life?
The first book I remember reading was Exodus. I was in the 7th grade and I couldn’t put it down. Although I can’t remember all the details, I’m sure it has made me more compassionate.

The next book would have to be Slammed by Colleen Hoover. I know these two books are polar opposites, but nonetheless they both left their mark.  With Slammed, I was introduced to a simple, yet complex love story. It brought out all my dormant feelings of first love. My heart raced, my palms became sweaty – all of those feelings came back in a rush. If it were not for Colleen Hoover, and her wonderful writing, I would not have written my first book. That’s a pretty big influence!

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing, I like to think about writing.  When my fingers are not on my keyboard, my brain is batting around dialogue.  I think it’s called “Voices in my Head” but for writers, it means creativity, not craziness (I think - lol)

Any future writing news you would like to share?
Yes!  I am currently working on Famous by Default (another YA book).  Also, if I get enough requests, I’ll continue with The Reader Series :)  (So email me!)

MK has always been a voracious reader. After hitting a dry spell of reading material, she decided to write the kind of book she'd like to read. This resulted in the creation of her debut novel, Intentional. (Award for Best Sweet Romance - eFestival of Words- August 2014)

Unintentional, her second book, is based on the life of one of the characters in Intentional. Unintentional was written as a stand-alone book.

Breaking Braydon and Taking Tiffany have both been released. Available on Amazon.

The Reader is MK's latest project, due out 2016.

When she's not writing novels, she likes to spend her free time traveling the world, splashing in mud puddles (She lives in Seattle, what can she say?), watching movies and reading (!)

MK also runs her own business in her current hometown of Mercer Island, Washington.

Book Shelf: Tone Deaf by Olivia Rivers

His world is music. Her world is silent.

Ali Collins was a child prodigy destined to become one of the greatest musicians of the twenty-first century—until she was diagnosed with a life-changing brain tumor. Now, at seventeen, Ali lives in a soundless world where she gets by with American Sign Language and lip-reading. She’s a constant disappointment to her father, a retired cop fighting his own demons, and the bruises are getting harder to hide.

When Ali accidentally wins a backstage tour with the chart-topping band Tone Deaf, she’s swept back into the world of music. Jace Beckett, the nineteen-year-old lead singer of the band, has a reputation. He’s a jerk and a player, and Ali wants nothing to do with him. But there’s more to Jace than the tabloids let on. When Jace notices Ali’s bruises and offers to help her escape to New York, Ali can’t turn down the chance at freedom and a fresh start. Soon she’s traveling cross-country, hidden away in Jace’s RV as the band finishes their nationwide tour. Review:

Tone Deaf by Olivia Rivers is a wonderfully told contemporary romance that explores strong topics in a fun, rich tale that weaves different elements together including romance, friendship and the power of learning to survive.

Allison Collins was a musical prodigy with a bright future until a brain tumour left her completely deaf and her mother passed away not long after; leaving her in the hands of her abusive father who has no qualms taking out his anger and frustration out on Ali. Aware she can escape when she turns eighteen in four months, Ali’s chance comes a few months earlier after she wins a backstage tour of a famous band. Jace Beckett is the lead guitarist in Tone Deaf, a popular rock band and someone known for his bad attitude and playboy ways. Jilted and guarded, the last thing Jace wants to do is be forced to play tour guide to the winner of the band’s latest contest, yet when Jace meets Ali, he automatically recognises the bruises that litter her body for the signs they are. Determined to protect the girl he sees as an unexpected kindred spirit, Jace offers Ali the chance to join him and the band on the rest of their tour, but is Ali willing to take a chance with a moody musician she barely knows……

Having wanted to read it since I first read its description, Tone Deaf thoroughly satisfied me. Unfolding through both Ali and Jace’s POV’s, I really enjoyed the story Olivia Rivers has woven. Following a main character who was deaf highlighted just how strong people with disabilities can be, and how having an ailment or impairment doesn’t mean you are any less of a person.

As our female lead, Ali was someone I really liked. As a victim of physical violence, Ali was justifiably fragile and fearful, but she was also very strong. Strong for taking a chance, and strong for speaking out even when time and time again no one believed her. Ali was a survivor, and I think it was lovely how Olivia Rivers was able to write a character who was the vision of a real abuse victim, but also someone who overcame and who pushed on. Sure Ali was afraid, but she was strong in a way she needed to be and I liked that—my heart really felt for her.

And Jace too. Jace Beckett is far from your typical celebrity and I have to commend Rivers for giving Jace and Ali a true connection. Horrible as it may be, they connected due to their similar histories and the experiences that had both been though. Jace comes across as a jerk in the very beginning of the novel, but you quickly realize it's a survival mechanism and that Ali has the power to bring him to life like never before. It was lovely to witness and I think Olivia Rivers writes a great budding romance with Jace and Ali.

Perfect for fans of the Backstage Pass series published by Entangled Crush, Tone Deaf was a really sweet and sincere novel that managed to explore some serious issues while also managing to tell a romantic and entertaining story filled with great friends, sweet scenes and a great ending!

Book Shelf: Recreated (Reawakened #2) by Colleen Houck

From Colleen Houck, New York Times bestselling author of The Tiger’s Curse, comes Recreated, the second book in the epic Egyptian-inspired Reawakened series, in which a seventeen-year-old must literally go to hell to save the love of her life.

Lily Young thought traveling across the globe with a reawakened sun prince was a grand adventure. Now she’s about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.

When Amon and Lily part tragically, he transports himself to the Netherworld—what mortals call hell. Tormented by the loss of his one true love, he’d rather suffer in agony during Lily’s mortal years than fulfill his duty to protect humanity.

Heartbroken, Lily seeks refuge on her grandmother’s farm. Yet she can feel Amon’s pain, and she has been having dreams—dreams of Amon continually suffering.

For before he departed, Amon gave Lily something very special, an item that connects them even though they are worlds apart. Now Lily must use this object to free him, and to free their realms from darkness and utter chaos. She will do whatever it takes.

Review:

Recreated is the second novel in Colleen Houck’s Reawakened series that will entrance readers with its luscious Egyptian mythology, fast paced storyline and romance.

After the events of the previous book, Lilliana “Lily” Young has tried to move on with her life, but try as she might, she can’t forget Amon, the ancient Egyptian prince turned Guardian she loved and lost. It doesn’t help that Lily dreams of Amon, seeing his suffering and continued love for her. When Lily realises Amon is in trouble, trapped in the Netherworld and suffering endlessly she decides to travel there herself, hoping to rescue him from a future of endless pain and torture; even if doing so mean’s Lily will need to fundamentally change herself if she hopes to survive in the Netherworld. Alongside an unexpected new ally, Lily ventures across great lands and through battles in the hope of reaching her true love.

The first novel in this series, Reawakened, started out slow for me before capturing my attention, and Recreated seemed to follow the same cord with me. Vividly written with lyrical writing that paints a fantastic picture, Recreated explores even more Egyptian mythology than its predecessor and weaves ancient magic, friendship, romance and action with plenty of Egyptian gods, creatures and lore.

Lily continues to be a decent heroine to follow, if not someone who irked me on occasion. I like her tenacity and enjoy when she seems to take control of herself. There’s nothing better than a heroine who can kick butt and Lily has all the potential; especially with all her recent changes. When I think about it, my issues with Lily in this novel stemmed from the fact that Colleen Houck has me slightly concerned about the possibility of a love triangle—make that a love-hexagon! Some of Lily’s actions in Recreated seemed to be in contradiction of her love for Amon and I disliked that. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but that being said, if the idea I have in my mind as to what Houck really has planned with triangle/hexagon pans out then she’s really quite brilliant and I will forgive her.

Recreated doesn’t feature Amon as much as Reawakened did, but we have the pleasure of getting to know Asten and Ahmose a little bit more in this instalment. Colleen Houck introduces readers to some new characters including Tia, who I really loved. This is one lioness who makes me smile both with her view on things and the way in which she’s attempting to understand Lily’s world.

Featuring a fast paced ending that sees a lot happen and new layers to the story come about, I’m intrigued to see what Colleen Houck has planned for Lily and the rest of the series. It’s clear from certain comments and situations that Houck has big plans for Lily and her role in protecting and saving the world and I look forward to seeing exactly what that is in the next book!
