New York Times bestselling author Chantal Fernando returns with BREACHING THE CONTRACT, book one in a brand new series—The Conflict of Interest Series—about a brigade of lawyers who, despite being bad boys at heart, always end up just on the right side of the law.

Katerina Dawson knows exactly what she wants from life. And as the new associate at the top law firm in the city, she’s ready to live out her dreams of becoming a criminal lawyer. But going on coffee runs and babysitting kids during the day was definitely not what she had in mind. She knows that anyone else would kill to be in her shoes, but she has to draw the line somewhere. That’s easier said than done, though, when Kat has to confront her handsome boss…

Tristan Channing and Jaxon Bentley run a successful law firm together and the two partners couldn’t be busier right now. When Jaxon suddenly takes a leave of absence, Tristan begrudgingly assumes responsibility of the new associate, the hot new associate, who has curves for days. Needing to keep his distance from her, Tristan sends Kat on needless errands and has her doing work even an intern wouldn’t touch, like picking up his kids. But his plan backfires when he sees his children grow attached to Kat and sees her getting comfortable in his home. It triggers something deep within him, and it feels right to have her there. Will Tristan be able to keep his work and personal lives separate, or will he find that his heart holds the final verdict?

Review:

Breaching the Contract is the latest release by bestselling Australian author Chantal Fernando and is a heart-warming and passionate start to her new series, Conflict of Interest that features a romance readers are sure to love.

Katerina Dawson knows exactly what she wants out of life. And her recent employment at a top law firm is just start of achieving her dream of becoming a criminal lawyer. The only thing standing in Kat’s way seems to be one of her new bosses, who sends her out on coffee runs and to pick his kids up for school. Tristan Bentley is one of the partners and everything in a lawyer Kat wants to be. Too bad he’s also rude, bossy and managing to slowly worm his way under Kat’s defenses with his unexpected moments of vulnerability and kindness. Falling for Tristan could mean the end of her career if word gets out, but sometimes fate has other ideas that what we had planned for ourselves….

Launching Chantal Fernando’s new series, Breaching the Contract was a delightfully addictive and highly entertaining romantic read. I absolutely devoured this novel, easily finishing it in one day despite having to work eight hours of that day—I’m sure any reader could finish it in just a couple of hours. It was just a quick, solid read that manages to pack plenty of attraction, chemistry and entertainment into its pages.

I don’t know why but heading into Breaching the Contract, I was expecting a story that would unfold through the POV’s of both the main characters and this wasn’t actually the case. I think it comes from the impression the description made. That being said, I did very much like Kat so following her throughout the story was in no way unpleasant.

I loved this law firm that Fernando has introduced us to. Kat and Tristian are front and centre as our main characters, but I’m also already very keen to see more of cheeky secretary Yvonne, sexy tattooed and bearded lawyer Hunter, suave and strong partner Jaxon and even the quieter law student Callum. I know Jaxon will feature in the next novel, but I hope we see more of the rest of the gang too.

Kat and Tristian had a really endearing relationship and I loved seeing Chantal Fernando focus on more than just their sexual relationship. The build-up was fabulous, and it was so sweet seeing Kat get to know Tristian’s family as well as the man himself. Logan was beyond adorable and that little man certainly won me over throughout the story. He really was just the cutest!

A truly enjoyable read, Breaching the Contract was thoroughly entertaining and I can’t wait to see whatever Chantal Fernando has in store for these characters next!

A simple but forgotten truth: Where harbingers of death appear, the morgues will soon be full.

Angie Dovage can tell there’s more to Reece Fernandez than just the tall, brooding athlete who has her classmates swooning, but she can’t imagine his presence signals a tragedy that will devastate her small town. When something supernatural tries to attack her, Angie is thrown into a battle between good and evil she never saw coming. Right in the center of it is Reece—and he’s not human.

What's more, she knows something most don't. That the secrets her town holds could kill them all. But that’s only half as dangerous as falling in love with a harbinger of death.

From Black Bird of the Gallows....

His soft voice clashes with the intensity of his gaze. “You’re adorable when you’re trying to be mad at me. You needn’t work so hard at it, though. We aren’t meant to be adversaries.”

“I, um…” My thoughts disband, leaving nothing for communication purposes. I’m adorable? Adorable has many definitions. I think my dog is adorable, for example. “That…wasn’t what I was going to ask you.”

He inclines his head. “Okay, then. Ask.”

But that “adorable” echoes through me, clinking around like a penny down a well. “What are we meant to be, then?”

His lips curls up at the corners. “That wasn’t your question, either.

Review:

Black Bird of the Gallows is Meg Kassel’s debut novel and is a deeply engaging paranormal read that offers readers something new and addictive in this fast paced, romantic and well written tale that thrills from the very beginning.

Seventeen year old Angie Dovage knows there is more to her new neighbour Reece Fernandez than meets the eye. With her own painful past, Angie understands the shadows and figments of grief that lurk behind Reece’s well placed smile and can’t help the thrill that runs through her when she sees him. Reece and his family are harbouring dark histories and when something supernatural begins to affect Angie’s town, discovering Reece’s secrets is only the beginning; catapulting Angie into a dangerous world of ancient magic and violent creatures. Falling in love with Reece may seem next to impossible to avoid but with Reece’s very presence signalling an impending disaster, Angie is facing more than just the possibility of losing her heart. She may lose her very life if she and Reece can stop the forces threatening to tear them apart….

From the opening chapter of Black Bird of the Gallows, I knew I was going to enjoy the story. The prose Meg Kassel employs made for effortless reading and managed to be descriptive without being too wordy. I found myself intrigued by Angie and the world she inhabited from the get go, keen to discover more about who she was and her past, as well as the mysterious new family who had just moved in next door.

Angie was an intelligent and down to earth character who had a very personable voice. She was easy to follow and made smart choices and questioned things to my liking. I appreciated that Meg Kassel gave her a bit of a history which allowed her to be more layered and complex. She just fit within the story effortlessly and made you genuinely keen to see that she figured things out and made it out unscathed.

Kassel takes a basic YA recipe—teen girl, mysterious new boy and supernatural element—and gives it a fresh feel with Black Bird of the Gallows. The mythology and paranormal history was highly interesting with the carrion bird and bee element something I have never seen before. I loved the way Kassel took harbingers of death and wove them into the story. It was refreshing to read something very different and I find myself keen to learn more about the Beekeepers and about the Harbingers themselves.

The nature aspect of the story was also something I very much enjoyed with the disaster that effects Angie and her loved ones exciting and thrilling. Kassel wonderfully mixed the dangers of a natural disaster with threats of a supernatural kind beautifully. It was truly thrilling and action packed reading.

A beautifully written debut filled with wonderful characters, sweet romance and a different paranormal aura, Black Bird of the Gallows was a very satisfying read. Meg Kassel has introduced me to some refreshing mythology I’m looking forward to seeing more of in the future. This is definitely an author to keep an eye on!

Waiting on Wednesday #193

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Releases on: November 14th 2017

Step into The City of Brass, the spellbinding debut from S. A. Chakraborty—an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and One Thousand and One Nights, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass--a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for....

Thoughts:
I must say, I do love a good genie or djinn tale! They're something that has always interested me and I'm thrilled to see more and more novels featuring them lately. The City of Brass sounds really good and I'm super excited to discover this debut!

What are YOU waiting on this week?

He’ll do anything to protect her. Even if it means letting her go.

Vault of Sin, Book 2

Tate Jackson made a big mistake. No, a monumental one. He picked the wrong place to introduce his wife, Cassie, to the alluring lifestyle they’d fantasized about.

Cassie’s not buying it. In fact, Tate is the last person she blames for that horrific night. She’s willing to give him the space he thinks he needs to get his head straight, but when divorce papers arrive, she realizes she’s out of time. But when she learns the truth, she has to decide if her heart can take the strain of piecing their love back together.

Review:

Union of Sin is the second novel in The Vault series by Eden Summers and is another deeply sensual and sexy tale of romance, sensuality and passion.

Tate Jackson and his wife Cassie had the perfect marriage, full of love, devotion and passion until one fateful experience ended in a mistake that left T.J. riddled with guilt. Unable to continue to living with lies, T.J. moved from their home and began the process of letting his wife move on. Cassie knows she loves T.J. more than anything in life, and he her, so devastation doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling she experiences when T.J. serves her divorce papers. Heartbroken and confused, Cassie decides to make one last ditch attempt to save her marriage, but with T.J. determined to protect her, even at the cost of both their hearts, can Cassie convince T.J. to give them another chance? Or will they both be left broken hearted by pride and guilt?

As another quick and addictive read, Union of Sin is a salacious tale full of enticement and passion that will thrill readers looking for something sinfully naughty but with a great story line. Delving back into the world she introduced in A Shot of Sin, Eden Summers this time allows readers to get to know T.J. and his wife Cassie, two individuals whose love and lust for each other know no bounds but who will have to face some important decisions where their marriage is concerned.

Union of Sin was well written and sexy as hell. I’m thrilled to be able to follow Leo, T.J. and Brute in this series and have so far very much enjoyed both Leo and now T.J.’s tales. T.J. and Cassie were both great characters to read about with T.J. heavily laden with guilt and Cassie a woman on a mission; determined to save her marriage.

It’s pretty clear from the opening chapter of Union of Sin that T.J. and Cassie adore each other. The love they have for one another is never in question; it’s everything else they have to face that Eden Summers deliciously explores. Longing and desire are fundamental in this novel as Cassie and T.J. go to great lengths for the one they love. Both characters must face some harsh truths, T.J. especially as he has to come to grips with the choices he’s chose and possibly the mistakes he unnecessarily made.

Union of Sin is another sinfully delicious tale and with a perfect ending, leaves me dying to see what Eden Summers has in store for the remaining member of The Vault trio Brute. I have no doubt his tale will be a scorcher—can’t wait!
