Book Shelf: Countdown by Michelle Rowen

3 seconds left to live. Once the countdown starts, it cannot be stopped.

2 pawns thrown into a brutal underground reality game.

Kira Jordan survived her family's murder and months on plague-devastated city streets with hard-won savvy and a low-level psi ability. She figures she can handle anything. Until she wakes up in a barren room, chained next to the notorious Rogan Ellis.

1 reason Kira will never, ever trust Rogan.

Even though both their lives depend on it. Their every move is controlled and televised for a vicious exclusive audience. And as Kira's psi skill unexpectedly grows and Rogan's secrets prove evermore deadly, Kira's only chance of survival is to risk trusting him as much as her instincts. Even if that means running head-on into the one trap she can't escape.

GAME OVER

Review:

Countdown by Michelle Rowen is an exciting, heart racing story in the tradition of The Hunger Games but featuring its very own unique, and addictive storyline. It's The Hunger Games meets Saw in this fantastic read that blends dystopian with sci-fi and that is sure to please from the get go!

Heading into Countdown, I was really excited. It's my first book by Michelle Rowen, but it sounded so good. I hoped it would live up to my expectations.....and you know what? It totally did! From the very opening pages, I was glued to this story. The stakes were always immensely high; leaving me no choice but to keep reading. I had to know what was going to happen next. And as the story progressed, this stayed the same; Countdown held my complete and utter attention all the way through!

I was really impressed with this story. In a way there's something very simply about the idea, but Rowen's execution is perfect; her writing flawless, lending so much to a really exhilarating story. I liked the way Rowen brought to light little twists and developments over the course of the book that impacted on the story and drove it.

In Countdown, main characters, Kira and Rogan find themselves in an unexpected and shocking situation when they wake up and discover they are in the middle of Countdown; a horrendous game where contestants compete for their very lives over a course of death defying levels to the delight of a group of underground Subscribers who enjoy watching the game. Complete the task on each level and you move on, or fail it and be killed. What ensues is a lot of danger, excitement and shocking revelations as Kira and Rogan must learn to trust each other amidst a game where nothing is as it seems!

I seriously loved Kira! Admittedly, there is a real vulnerable side to her that we get to discover throughout the book, but she really was one brave and feisty heroine. Amidst a bad situation, Kira learns so much about herself and does what she has to do to survive, while still staying true to herself and her morals--I admire this! Basically, she was just one really likable character to follow throughout the story.

As Kira's partner in crime, Rogan proved to be a real conundrum. In the beginning of the book it's clear that there's so much more to this notorious criminal than meets the eye, but it's unclear what. As the reader, I found it thrilling seeing Kira discover the unexpected truth behind Rogan Ellis. Rogan was dark and sexy and a real diamond in the rough. He and Kira form an unexpected bond over the course of the book that had me very satisfied, and often giddy, with their chemistry and connection. Me likey!

From beginning to end Countdown is a thrilling read. There's plenty of story developments to keep things progressing nicely amidst the danger and high stakes that is the game of Countdown. My only issue with this book is that I feel there is so much left to explore about Rowen's world, most importantly Kira's ability and where they've come from. After reading this fantastic story, I find myself crossing my fingers that Michelle Rowen will allow us readers to visit Kira and Rogan once more with a sequel!

My Recommendation: Looking for an exciting, fast paced novel? Countdown is it!
Cover: It doesn't really showcase the story inside, but Kira & Rogan are on the front, so I like it =D
Will I read sequel/continue with series: At this point if Michelle Rowen were to write a sequel I'd read it for sure!

___________________________________________________

The end of the world happened quickly. The sun still shone, there was no explosion - just a tsunami-sized wave of human thought drowning the world in telepathic noise as everyone's inner-most secrets became audible. Everyone's thoughts, that is, except sixteen-year-old Danby.

Everyone looked like bad actors in a poorly dubbed movie. Their expressions didn't match their emotions and their lips didn't sync with what they were saying. But they were all so loud.

God-he-looks-hot-Can't-she's-my-best-friend-How'd-she-lose-that-weight-No-don't-you-dare-Oh-no-please-

The end of the world happens in the blink of an eye.

When The Snap sweeps the globe, everyone can instantly hear everything that everyone else is thinking. As secrets and lies are laid bare, suburbs and cities explode into insanity and violence. What might have been an evolutionary leap instead initiates the apocalypse.

Sixteen-year-old Danby Armstrong's telepathy works very differently. She can tune into other people but they can't tune into her. With only this slender defence, Danby must protect her little brother and reach the safety of her mother's mountain retreat. But it's 100 kilometres away and the highways are blocked by thousands of cars and surrounded by millions of people coming apart at the psychic seams.

Danby's escape is made even more dangerous by another cataclysm that threatens humanity's extinction. And her ability to survive this new world will be tested by a charismatic young man whose power to save lives may be worse than death itself.

Blog Tour: The Rig by Joe Ducie-Interview

I'm super excited to have the Aussie Blog Tour for The Rig stop by today! Thanks to Hot Key Books and Five Mile Press, author Joe Ducie talks with me about his debut novel and his interesting background in this oh, so fun interview
________________________________________________

Hi Joe! Thanks for agreeing to chat with me today. I'm really excited about being a part of the blog tour for your debut novel The Rig and can't wait to talk to you.....

Let's jump straight in, shall we?

To begin with, I have to say congrats on the recent release of The Rig! I'm sure it must be a really exciting time for you right now. How does it feel knowing your story's actually out there and that people can read it?
Thank you. Having the story out and about in the world is the best kind of scary-good feeling. Two parts good to every part scary! Strange feeling, walking into a bookshop and seeing the book on the shelf. I’m firmly resisting the urge to hang around the shelf and make a not-so-subtle recommendation to any one that happens by…

Describe The Rig in five words?
Boy meets girl meets sharks.

For those who haven't had the chance to read it yet, The Rig is actually a really complex novel with so many different elements, especially main character Will Drake, who has a knack for escaping even the most heavily of guarded prisons. Seriously, there are so many great male leads, but Will is something else! Is he based on anyone you know?
Will Drake is based entirely on my good self and my misspent teenage years getting into all sorts of trouble. Can’t say I was ever sent to an oil rig prison, but I came close! Heh, I’m joking. If Drake is based on anyone in my life I’d have to say my brother. They both share that same can-do attitude that gets the job done, no matter how dangerous the job may be. Both Drake and my brother act where others wouldn’t, and that makes for an interesting character.

It's evident from the very beginning that The Rig is going to be one crazy, intricate story; especially seeing as possible escape may be in the works for the main characters during the book. How much effort went into making sure every detail was perfect?
I wrote the first draft of The Rig in a busy 11 days, but I’d been thinking on the story in my head for months, so when it came down to putting it on the page I blazed through the words. To be honest, a lot of the story revealed itself as I was writing. Making sure the details were right in the aftermath of those 11 days was a lesson in perseverance! I think half the battle in writing a novel is finishing the darn thing and fixing the details later. Well worth it, though. And I can’t thank the editors from Hot Key Books enough for polishing those details all the more.

I LOVE the cover for The Rig. I'm not trying to be superficial, but boy is it striking. Did you have any say in the cover's design?
Oh, I am most certainly in love with the cover. The cover was designed by a chap at Hot Key and evolved quite a bit from the first time I saw it back in March. Have to say, even those early concepts were fantastic so there were no complaints or suggestions from me! I was just along for the ride on that one.

Will certainly goes through a lot during his time on the Rig; it's a brutal place. How do you think you'd fair being in a place like that?
As admirably, if not more so! Heh, again, no, I’d probably just learn to keep my head down and off the radar of the insane guards. That said, I wouldn’t be averse to a bit of mischief if I could manage it.

A little birdy told me you have a degree in counterterrorism, security and intelligence, and have worked in some really incredible fields throughout your career; from border protection to personal security and now writing. How did you manage to make the incredible jump from there to writing? Is it just something you've always had a passion for?
Oh, that old degree gets me into all sorts of trouble. Writing is something that has played on my mind for years, and I did spend years crafting drafts and stories before anything was even close to being published. Put in the practice, so to speak. The last few years, I’ve kind of used the writing as a buffer between me and the security/counterterrorism world. A sort of fence and a chance to relax, wind down, and work on projects that are entirely unrelated to security and intelligence! That side of my life can be… grating. With any luck, if the writing side of my life continues on course I’ll be able to hand in my badge and my gun and walk away!

You're British born but currently live Down Under, what's the biggest difference you find living in Australia?
There’s a lot more desert in Australia. Also I never saw a kangaroo hopping down the M6. No, seriously, I’ve spent the majority of my 25 years in Australia, with the occasional visit back to the U.K., so the biggest difference I find is the chocolate tastes differently and there’s a complete and utter lack of proper curry sauce at fish and chip shops in Australia.

If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, real or fictional, who would you want to meet and why?
Wouldn’t mind meeting Churchill. That man saved civilization. On the fictional side of the fence, I’d have to say Peter Venkman from Ghostbusters, played, of course, by Bill Murray. I reckon we’d get along and also I want to be a Ghostbuster.

The Rig races to a really climactic ending, any hints to what we can expect from you in the future?
Just finished a draft for a sequel to The Rig, picking up pretty much from where The Rig leaves off. Also working on a few other projects, urban fantasy and contemporary horror/tragic comedy sort of vibe. Got a lot of ideas, a whole lot of ideas, but alas for the time to get them on a page. Thankfully, plenty of time between now and the future, so by the time I’m done I’ll be littering two or three entire shelves at the bookshops!

6 Quick Questions:

1. Favorite colour? Blue
2. Day or Night? Night.
3. Rain or Shine? Rain.
4. Favorite ice-cream flavor? Rocky road.
5. Favorite movie? What Dreams May Come
6. Lucky number? 3

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions Joe--I certainly appreciate it. Best of luck in the future. If your debut novels anything to go by, I'm sure you have plenty of great stories up your sleeves!
Thanks for some great questions! Really enjoyed answering them.

The inspiration behind American Girl on Saturn

As much as I'd love to take credit for the idea of American Girl On Saturn, it was actually the idea of my sister, Emily. Many months ago, we were in the Taco Bell parking lot when she said, "You know what'd be a good book? If there was a boyband and something bad happened to them, so they had to go into hiding, and they ended up staying with some government agent and his family. And it'd be told from the point of view of the teenage daughter. You know, what it's like to have a boyband crashing at your house and spending your summer on lockdown."

Two weeks later, I was still thinking about this idea, so I asked her if she was planning on writing it. She said it'd be a fun book to read, but it wasn't "her type" of book to write. Then she said, "But you can write it if you want." I was on the couch that night with a bag of colored Sharpies and my One Direction notebook plotting American Girl On Saturn.

To be very honest, One Direction did inspire a lot of this book. How could they not? It's a book about a boyband, and they're only the most famous boyband in the world right now. I adore their music, and I admire their talent and drive to be the best they can be. I also very much respect them for taking on such an insane, hectic life at such young ages. Their music played in the background many nights while writing this.

But they aren't the only band who brought American Girl On Saturn to life. Punk-pop band Simple Plan influenced a lot of little things in this book (like Milo and Noah's middle names, the fact that the guys are from Canada, etc.) and rock band Hawthorne Heights inspired the fictional band Sebastian's Shadow, the main character Chloe's favorite band. Overall, a love for music in general inspired this book. Anyone who has ever fangirled over a band or stood in line for tickets or held tightly to an album to get them through a tough time will be able to relate to this book. Music is a universal language, and this story is a fun romance told from the point of view of a girl who gets to experience music from the other side.

Nikki Godwin is a Young Adult/New Adult author from the southern USA. She is a city girl who can't live without Mountain Dew, black eyeliner, Hawthorne Heights, and candles from Bath & Body Works. When not writing, she's not-so-secretly internet-stalking her favorite bands. She may or may not completely love One Direction.

The summer after graduation is supposed to be that first real taste of freedom - but not for eighteen-year-old Chloe Branson. Just as that breeze of freedom is making its way into her galaxy, her secret-service-agent dad drops a meteor-sized bomb of bad news on her and her sisters. An attempt has been made on the lives of Canadian boyband, Spaceships Around Saturn, during their USA tour, and the guys have to go into hiding ASAP. The only problem? In the midst of the crisis and media frenzy, their dad volunteered to hide the guys...in their house.

Six-year-old Emery is as ecstatic as any self-proclaimed Saturnite would be, but Chloe and her seventeen-year-old sister Aralie watch their summer plans crash and burn like a falling star. The SAS guys aren't happy with the situation, either. Bad boy Jules picks fights with Aralie about everything from his Twitter followers to his laundry, and heart-throb Benji can't escape Emery's fangirlisms for more than three minutes.

But after the super-cute Milo kisses Chloe during a game of hide-and-seek, she finally understands what Emery means when she talks about SAS being "out of this world." If this is what Saturn feels like, Chloe doesn't want to come back to Earth.

Review:

If ever a book was going to be written with the fan-girl at heart, American Girl On Saturn is it! Insanely sweet, sassy and hilarious, this book will make you sigh, swoon and squeal. Surrender to all things that is Starships Around Saturn with this fun, quirky tale that will have you grinning from ear to ear until the very last page!

When I decided to participate in a book blitz on my blog for American Girl on Saturn it looked like just another great-sounding book that I was sharing with my followers. Little did I realize how much I would want to read the book as I was setting up my post. What can I say? I knew I had to read it.

And I'm so glad I did. Honestly, I did have high expectations when beginning this but luckily for me I was addicted from start to finish. Admittedly, American Girl on Saturn isn't the best book I've ever seen written. Or the deepest, but by golly did I love this book! Author Nikki Godwin has penned my new guilty fan-girl pleasure with this cutesy tale that while sometimes seems over the top and far fetched, is nothing but fun, fun, fun.

Godwin explores many a teenage girls fantasy when Canada's most famous boy-band Starships Around Saturn is forced into lockdown at our main character Chloe Branson's house after an attempt is made on their lives. What follows is a lot of laughs, romance and unexpected friendship as Chloe and her sisters discover the true guys of Starships Around Saturn. If you've ever had a fascination with a boy-band at some point in your life, and lets face it....we all have at some point, American Girl on Saturn is for you!

The characters in the book are so amazing! I'm having to restrain myself from squealing like a fan-girl when I think of the brilliant way Nikki Godwin manages to weave together the very normal Branson girls with and not-so-normal member of Starships Around Saturn. They're all so great to read about and have different personalities. From main character and protagonist Chloe, who is down to earth and sweet and very easy to relate to, to the other Branson sisters; rocker/edgy Arelie and baby sis Emery who has more personality and flair than the entire cast of characters combined...every one made me smile for different reasons.

As the focus of the Branson hysteria and the band themselves, Starships Around Saturn is comprised of serious and sexy Milo, bad-boy Jules, heart-throb Benji, cheeky Tate and wise and trustworthy Noah. In the opening chapters as the boys are introduced, I really worried about having so many characters in this book. I mean, really? Who needs five sexy male characters? Seemed odd to me....until I read the book. Now the answer seems obvious....um, I do! These boys are so well developed and well rounded that each and every one brings something different to the story in one form or another. It's impossible not to love these boys!

Nikki Godwin blends plenty of romance into her story, but there's also a beautiful layer of friendship that shines throughout this novel. I just loved this. In fact, I think it was my favorite part! As Chloe, Aralie and Emery bond with the boys, different relationships form and different bonds are forged between the characters. Unexpected friendships are stuck and seeing how comfortable and trusting they are with each other is beautiful. It's impossible not to squeal over so many cute and funny moments between different characters.

Trying to keep my inner fan-girl in check is hard when I think of this book. There's nothing boring about this story and with all the laughs, fun and sensational character bonding that takes place, American Girl on Saturn is sure to please from beginning to end!
