Review:

My Lady Quicksilver is the third smashing instalment in Bec McMaster’s London Steampumk series and is another tantalizing tale filled with passion, fire and scorching romance.

Sir Jasper Lynch is the leader of the Nighthawks, an infamous group of blue bloods who police over society in an effort to protect and serve the people. Lynch is renowned for his cold and calculated abilities, but there’s one thing lately the seems to make him burn….an elusive mercenary by the name of Mercury who has become his obsession. Rosalind Fairchild despises the Echelon and through her persona of Mercury, she and her fellow humanist are preparing to make a stand against them. Yet first she needs to find her missing brother and in order to do so she must infiltrate Nighthawk headquarters. Rosa is prepared to play a role, but she soon discovers that Jasper Lynch is far from the man she believed him to be and quickly Rosa begins to realise that she may no longer be acting when it comes to her feelings for him. Having lost her love before, Rosalind hesitates to love again, but as Lynch continues his hunt for Mercury, taking a chance may be the best option to ensure she not only protects the man she has come to love, but herself too.

That’s it; it’s official…Bec McMaster has become my new favourite steampunk author! I’m in love with this series—simply in love. Each instalment seems to be getting better and better and I’m becoming more invested and more in awe of the world with each novel within the series. The whimsical, passionate and fiery world mixes with sharp, intelligent and witty characters to create stories that suck me in time and time again. Whether hero or heroine, McMaster writes her characters tangibly and with personality. It is almost effortless to follow them throughout each instalment as McMaster’s world building and romantic connections remains spot on.

My Lady Quicksliver features Nighthawk Jasper Lynch and humanist Rosalind Fairchild, two characters we have seen briefly in the first two novels. Rosalind was instrumental in saving Lena’s life in Heart of Iron but that is really all we have seen of her, whilst Jasper has only been mentioned in passing or during his duties as Nighthawk leader. This being said, I wasn’t sure heading into the novel how much I would actually like these two individuals—they were only ideas in my head, not really people. And then I began the book….and very promptly fell for them.

Rosa and Lynch were fantastic characters to follow. Rosa was calculated but cheeky and knew how to get under Lynch’s skin. She was much more than her role as Mercury and I loved seeing the other sides to her as well. Lynch was poised and collected, but beneath his controlled exterior was a man who was passionate and determined….at least where Rosa was concerned, and especially as she played the part of Mrs Marberry.

The romance between Rosalind and Lynch was absolutely tantalizing. The sexual tension was strong and all-encompassing from the very opening chapter and their relationship was one I really enjoyed reading about. She was an obsession he could not let go while he quickly became the one thing she never planned for. Bec McMaster built their romance beautifully with heated conversations and passion filled kisses and more. Rosa was far from the blushing virgin who had never loved before and I appreciated this layer to her character; she had to reconcile her aversion to love with what she felt.

Addictive and spellbinding, My Lady Quicksliver was yet another solidly written novel from Bec McMaster. I’m wholly invested in the characters and story still and looking very forward to beginning the next novel featuring Perry and Garrett straight away!
