Book Shelf: Cold Blood (Dirty Blood #2) by Heather Hildenbrand

Wood Point Academy is not at all what I expected. For one thing, it looks like a cross between military school and Buckingham Palace. Everyone stares, the floors shine so bright you can see your reflection in them from a mile away, and no one smiles. Unless they're kicking your butt in the process. Which happens more often than not for the freshman. Lucky for them, my presence has just stolen the spotlight, and they get a break from the daily joys of hazing. At least I've got plenty to take my mind off the fact that my psycho cousin, Miles De'Luca, keeps calling and declaring his love and promising to come for me just as soon as he's destroyed anyone standing in our way. Wes isn't going to like that idea. So between Miles, Wood Point's evil welcoming committee, and the drill sergeant hottie trainer from hell, I just keep asking myself, how did I end up here?

Review: (Warning: Contains some spoilers)

Cold Blood proves to be a delightful follow up to Dirty Blood. In this book author Heather Hildenbrand expands on her world and a change in setting marks a new direction for the series. New characters mingle with old as Tara begins the next phase of her life at Wood Point Academy, training school for hunters. New friends and new enemies come into play as Tara’s situation begins to become even more intricate and dangerous.

Things have sure changed quickly for Tara since the last book ended and she soon finds herself enrolled at Wood Point Academy where almost all the students look down at her and dislike her seeing as she’s part were-wolf. Lucky for Tara she soon strikes up a friendship with the nerdy, but very capable Logan and the spirited, mischief-making Cambria and soon these two misfits are her solace and strength in a school far different than what she’s used to.

I love Tara’s new friends. I enjoyed the ones she had in the first book, but the friendship she shares with Logan and Cambria is different. It’ more substantial and Cambria is awesome—a true friend to Tara. They seemed to form a bond really quickly and they just went together as friends real well. That’s exactly the kind of friendship I love to read about.
In the very beginning of the book I found myself really missing Wes. Apart from a brief appearance in the very start, right before Tara heads off to the academy, he’s not in it all too much. I was slightly disappointed in Tara at this point too, because it seemed as though she wasn’t even missing Wes all too much. Makes sense that if I have to miss him, she should too, right? She thought about him occasionally, but it didn’t seem like she missed him in the way I was expecting her too. And I wasn't sure if I thought that was a good or a bad thing....

And then.....Alex happened. He came into the picture, arrogant and cocky and totally a hunter through and though and suddenly all thoughts of Wes flew from my mind. He was chosen to train Tara, but kept getting on her bad side; offending her and being a bit of an ass and suddenly I didn’t miss Wes any more. I didn’t miss him at all. I enjoyed the interactions between Tara and Alex. With their difference of opinions it was no surprise the issues it caused, but as they got to know one another and train together, I found myself eager for their banter and to see Alex get under Tara’s skin. I loved Wes in the first book and thoroughly enjoy his relationship with Tara...but I think I’m switching teams in this scenario. I’m now officially an Alex girl! There’s just something about him that's so alluring and I can’t help but want him to succeed in winning Tara’s heart.

Tara has feelings for both boys now and with her connection to Wes messing with her mind and feelings, she’s unsure of how real her feelings are. I can see Hildenbrand continue to play with this situation and explore her characters more in the next book and look forward to seeing how things play out. Personally I know who I love and it’ll be interesting seeing Tara decide who she does.

An action packed read, all of great characters, humour, romance and never lacking adventure, Cold Blood races through a number of impressive battles to a killer ending that will have you hanging out for the next book! This isn’t one to be missed!
