Sometimes you find home, sometimes it comes looking for you.

Callie knows a lot more about pain than she does about family. She’s never belonged, at least, not until she falls through a portal into her true home. The beautiful faerie city of Eirensae doesn’t come free. Callie must find her amulet and bind herself to the city, and most importantly, avoid the Fallen fae who seek her life. Seems like a small price to pay for the family she’s always wanted.

Then she meets cynical and gorgeous Rowan, who reads the darkness of her past in her eyes. He becomes Callie’s part-time protector and full-time pain in the ass. He has secrets of his own for Callie to unravel. What they don’t know is that the future of Eirensae lies with them, and the once peaceful city is about to become a battleground for power.

 .....From The Reflection Pond.....

Lights flickered through the window, illuminating Callie’s face. She lifted one eyelid and groaned. Her shoulder blades and tailbone ached as though she’d fallen asleep on a sharp rock. Why was she on the floor? A steady beat throbbed at the base of her skull, like someone taking an ax to her brain and chopping it into tiny pieces. She pressed a palm to her forehead in hope of drowning out the world. A rumble shook the floor, vibrating up through Callie’s body.

She forced both eyes open. A gilt ceiling rose over her. Lightning turned the gold into knives that stabbed at her eyeballs. Her clothes felt damp and sticky. Her mouth tasted like rotten fruit. She rolled onto her side, cringing the entire way.

…and blinked.

…and blinked.

A woman lay next to Callie, hair spilling across the floor in a dark, silken waterfall. Her eyes were open, a startling blue that reminded Callie of an endless sky, bright against the china pale of her iridescent skin. She looked like stone, so smooth, so cold. A single scarlet droplet dangled from the woman’s dry lips.

Wine, Callie thought, but the idea had no roots.

Where was she?

Callie couldn’t remember.

As she watched, the dark bit of liquid grew heavier and heavier, finally falling into a large puddle of

Wine?

She was so still. So pale. So

Callie scrambled to her feet, her hands slipping and fumbling. Her mouth rounded, but no sound came out. The woman was wreathed in red. It splattered her face and trailed her neck. It spread beneath her like a blanket.

Helpsomeonewhere was she? Callie lifted her hands in front of her face, horrified. Her arms were streaked with blood, an abstract painting of death.

"Help me," she said. "Help me!" Her voice gained strength and she screamed. She ran for the closed door, her heels sliding in blood. She crashed into the frame, leaving bright, damning handprints. "Help me, help me, help me."

She left smudges on the doorknob and on the golden walls of the never-ending hallway. She threw open doors to empty rooms, still screaming. "Help me!" Nobody, nobody. She yelled at the hallway, the doors, the windows.

Finally, footsteps. Callie ran toward them, the swirl of her dress flinging blood onto the floor. She crashed into a blond woman. She knew her…knew her…

"Sapphire!" Callie shrieked. "There’s aand she’s—"

Sapphire’s hands were all over Callie. "Where is it? I don’t see any—"

A dark-haired boy emerged from a far doorway. "What’s all this screaming?" he growled, then he saw Callie and his face went pale. "Let me heal her," he said, rushing to them and pushing Sapphire away.

"She’s not hurt," Sapphire said.

"Then what—"

Callie grabbed a fistful of each of their shirts. Sapphire and Rowan. She knew them now. "She’s dead. She’s dead."

Rowan’s expression went from worried to confused to horrified, and then he was running away from them, into the room where Callie had been. Sapphire went after him. Callie followed, her stomach twisting. She reached the doorway as Rowan said, "She’s gone." He was knelt over the woman, hands pressed to her face.

Callie could see the wounds now, how they tore at her flesh, jagged slices in her arms, her legs, her neck. Callie’s gaze traveled over the pooled blood to Rowan. His lips were moving.

"What happened?" he said. "What happened?"

Sapphire was on her knees now, the woman’s head cradled in her lap. "Orchid," she whispered, saying the name over and over again like a prayer.

Callie swallowed the bile at the back of her tongue. "I don’t know. I don’t—"

"What happened?"

She backed away, his words sliced through her skull. She tried to remember, but there was nothing.

Review:

Reflection Pond by Kacey Vanderkarr is a lush and deeply magical tale where slight hints at violence and politics weave together with magic and glamour to create an alluring, riveting and at times romantic read that found me easily losing myself within its story!

Following seventeen year old Callie, I must admit I found myself very taken by Reflection Pond. The cover is stunning and the excitement within the story starts from the opening chapter when our heroine quite literally falls through into another world. Personally I’m a big lover of faerie stories but heading into Reflection Pond, though I adored the cover, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the book. Diving straight into the story when Callie falls through a seemingly normal pond and into the stunning faerie city of Eirensae, I found Reflection Pond to be a beautiful and beguiling read!

The world Kacey Vanderkarr details in Reflection Pond was colorful and vivid and I was pleased by the character dynamic Vanderkarr incorporates between Callie that those she meets within Eirensae. Admittedly the chemistry and dynamic Callie shared with Rowen was the highlight of the book for me, but I was also entranced by the other aspects of the story and the characters Callie meets as she begins to find her place within Eirensae, and in life.

Told both in Callie and Rowen’s POV’s, I really appreciated being able to see things unfold through both their eyes. I loved having the chance to experience both their thoughts and feelings. Callie was a very interesting heroine to follow; it becomes quite obviously from early on in the story that she is a haunted individual and has had something very traumatic done to her in the past. I liked that Vanderkarr gave her some substance instead of having a heroine who has never experienced a difficult day in their life. Though we don’t yet know exactly what happened to Callie, I can certainly make a good guess, and it’s clear it still has a deep effect on her.

I really liked Callie; she was feisty and genuinely had a good heart and I found her lovely to follow. Callie comes a long way in the small space of one book as she comes to accept Eirensae as somewhere she belongs. With the powerful abilities she has and the importance she has in the future of Eirensae, I can’t wait to see how Vanderkarr develops her further.

Callie finds a wonderful match in Rowen, the male lead of Reflection Pond and Callie’s constant pain in the butt. Rowen is sharp, sarcastic and extremely guarded. He’s arrogant, brooding and has a shield up around himself to keep people from getting close. He fights people off with snarky comments and biting attitude. Though he’s a fierce fighter and brave warrior, his attitude has him coming across was a bit of an ass to all those around him. Just the way he likes, and needs. it. However Kacey Vanderkarr leaves us readers with no doubt in our minds that Rowen is honorable, courageous and an amazing person.

Scorned by those around him and treated as an outsider even though he does everything in his power to fit in, I found it no wonder that Rowen acted as he did. His actions relayed a troublesome young man who didn’t care about anything at all and preferred to be a loner when in reality being inside his mind showcased how deeply he wanted to be a part of Eirensae, and how much he yearned for people to accept him for what he was.

All the minor characters in this book were wonderful, but as I previously mentioned Callie and Rowen stole the show for me, as they were no doubt meant to. Interesting individually, together they took it to a whole other level. These two had great chemistry and energy together and I loved the dynamic Vanderkarr explores between them. They give the story that extra spark that makes every interaction between them thrilling and addicting!

Reflection Pond was wonderfully written with Kacey Vanderkarr detailing a very riveting world with sensational characters. Racing towards an exciting ending that opens up a brand new chapter to the story; I’m beyond excitedly looking forward to the next book to continue Callie and Rowen’s journey!

Shadow Fire by Kimber Leigh Wheaton- Character Interview with Ashlyn & Zane

Today as a bit of fun on the blog, author Kimber Leigh Wheaton interviews her two main characters, Ashlyn and Zane from her debut novel Shadow Fire. Asking her characters questions no one else dares, Kimber manages to put them on the spot and picks their brains as only she can!
____________________________________________

Ashlyn a free-spirited teenager whose peaceful life is shattered when the village elders honor her with a perilous quest to recover a stolen relic.

Zane a jaded mercenary, torn by his undeniable desire for Ashlyn and the dark secret that could make her hate him forever.

Delistaire a malevolent sorcerer driven by an insatiable lust for power.

All three are bound together by an ancient relic supposedly infused with the power of a Goddess.

Shadow Fire adventure, passion, secrets, and betrayal
As Ashlyn and Zane race to stay one step ahead of the evil lurking in the shadows, their passions are ignited and their bond strengthens. But will they find the relic before Delistaire? Or has their entire quest been orchestrated from the very beginning by a madman in pursuit of ultimate power?

Each installment of the Light Chronicles is a standalone story.

Ashlyn Silverthorne

How did you feel the day you found out you were the Chosen?
It was awful. The entire town gathered in the town square that day. There were so many people packed together, it was hard to breathe. When the announcement came, it didn't click right away, you know? I remember being shuffled to the front by numerous hands, until I was standing on the wooden dais with the mayor. Everyone yelled and cheered. They laughed. I was being sent to my death and they all cheered.

Wow, that must have been rough. Do you know why they chose you?
I'd like to think it's because the townspeople thought I might succeed due to my hunting and martial arts skills. Perhaps I was considered the most expendable of the girls in the village. It doesn't matter anymore. What's done is done.

How about a lighter question? What's your favorite food?
Seafood, especially crab. I was introduced to the best fresh seafood during my time on the pirate ship. Taranis and his crew eat quite well.

Speaking of Taranis, tell me about the pirate captain.
Pirate captain? *snorts in laughter* It's impossible to describe Taranis so you'll just have to read about him yourself. How about a sheep in wolf's clothing? Yep, that describes him perfectly.

Interesting description. Tell me about Zane.
Handsome, loyal, powerful, sweet, my hero and my soul mate. Don't tell him, but I fell hard the moment I gazed into his eyes. *blushes*

So you believe in love at first sight?
I didn't. In fact, I thought my sister Celeste was crazy with her new love every few weeks. Please…

But… what about you and Zane?
Don't get me wrong, I was attracted to Zane immediately. I suppose I did fall in love pretty fast. But in my defense, we were on a dangerous quest we might not survive. Why bother fighting my feelings when any day could be my last?

What's your message to others based on your experience?
Live everyday like it's your last. We are responsible for shaping our own destinies. I thought being chosen was the worst thing that ever happened to me, the end of my life. After you read my story, you decide. Was being chosen the worst or the best thing that could have happened? I know my answer…
This or That

Sun or Moon? Moon

Forest or Mountains? Forest

Salty or Sweet? Sweet—preferably chocolate

Town or Country? Pirate Ship

Dragon or Griffin? Griffin—do dragons even exist?

Sun or Rain? Sun

Cats or Dogs? Either, though I'd prefer a fenrir or a griffin

Sword or Bow? Bow

Flowers or Candy? Candy—what would I do with flowers?

Zane or Taranis? Funny… I won't dignify that with an answer.

Zane Elistaire

How did you end up taking the job to protect the Chosen?
I hadn't planned to. In fact it was the last thing I wanted. You see, I knew who was involved, and frankly I didn't want to deal with him.

Him?
Delistaire, of course. Are you going to let me finish answering your question?

Sorry. Please continue…
I was in Verdane having just dropped off a merchant caravan. My plan was to leave in the morning and head to my next job. While I was relaxing in the town square, a beautiful girl appeared. She was playing tag with the town orphans. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Not only was she the most gorgeous creature I'd ever seen, but she was so vibrant, so full of life. Her smile warmed my heart. When one of the orphans yelled her name, I realized she was the Chosen. At that moment I knew I would protect her—I would give up everything in order to keep her safe. Even if that meant crossing paths with Delistaire.

Wow, that was romantic. How do you know Delistaire?
You know I can't answer that. I have no desire to give away secrets at this point.

What do you find most attractive about Ashlyn?
Everything. *laughs* Fine, if I have to choose, I suppose it would be her spirit. Ashlyn is a fighter through and through. She never gives up, even when the odds are against her. I admire the glimmer of determination she gets in her eyes when she's ready to fight.

What do you like least about her?
Do I look like a fool to you? *Rolls his eyes* Probably the same thing I like the most about her. She's not an easy person to protect…

You became a mercenary when you were twelve. How did you find work?
The mercenaries guild. There's one in every town.

They were willing to hire a child?
Sure things were difficult during the first year, but I had help. I was also quite skilled for a twelve-year-old. My guardian helped hone my fighting skills, and then I fought in the
coliseum in Palma. I rose among the ranks, made a name for myself. Afterward no one seemed to care that I was a child.

Who was your guardian?
Again with the questions I can't answer. How about something I can answer for a change?

Fine. What's your favorite color?
Blue. But not just any blue—the deep blue of the sea when the ship is out in deep water.

Any last words or advice?
If you're unhappy with your life don't sit back and hope for change. If there's something you really want, go for it. Never let fear hold you back. Sure you may fail sometimes, we all do. But nothing is worse than wondering what could have been had we only tried.

***Ooooh! Isn't this a fantastic character interview?!? I'm super excited to read this even more--I'm have to bump Shadow Fire up my to-review list :)

“I took great effort to see you.” His tone hinted the act made him deserving. “You sleep; I’ll keep watch. And my vow of yesterday stands. I won’t molest you.”

To her annoyance, her pulse danced a country jig. Whatever efforts he took on her behalf were of questionable nature, not romantic. She made a rude noise in case he held any such illusions.

“Keep watch for what? No one besides you could reach my window and my door’s bolted.”

Lydon laced his hands behind his head, his lips twitching as though fighting a smile. “Then I’ll watch you. Like before.”

Horror prickled over her in a rushing tide. She leapt up. “You watched me sleep? Not skulked around in my bedroom to attack me?” She groaned, imagining him watching her drool, snore, or grind her teeth.
He laughed, low and warm. “You’re so lovely when you dream, Lils. An angel.” He patted the empty spot beside him.

Her traitorous body, defenseless against him, obeyed. The red, silken comforter hissed beneath her knees while she climbed onto the opposite side of the giant bed. The lone lamp by the bed cast a mystical glow over Lydon, catching golden highlights in his light hair, the silver shards in his eyes. “Watching people sleep is creepy.”

He shrugged. “Not people, just you. Besides, I am creepy.”

Definitely not creepy. Kalila settled into a cross-legged position and fixed him with a no-nonsense look. “Since it seems you have nothing better to do than lie there like a sloth, be useful and fess up. Why am I being treated as some freaking porcelain doll in a glass case? How can my nightmares benefit the V’alkara? Can the V’alkara really take my dreams away? None of you seem sick—and no, mental doesn’t count—so what’s wrong? And when will you take us home?”

Lydon jiggled one black boot. What she thought might be disapproval flickered in his eyes. “I won’t waste our alone time answering inquiries. I have other plans.”

She swallowed hard. Maybe she’d misjudged him. Maybe he was so confident in his assassin abilities—and her helplessness—he felt sneakiness was unnecessary.

He sat up in a blink of an eye, moving with inhuman speed. One large hand was planted next to her knee. His breath fanned her chin. The scent of the outdoors and a tinge of smoke drifted from his clothes. His voice whispered spider-soft.

“Do you care to know what other less attractive names some call me?” The world seemed to shrink to Lydon and the force of his gaze. “Angel of Ruin. Living Nightmare. Scourge.” His eyes gleamed, darkened. “As you might guess from such monikers, peace in my life is rare. I’ll relish any fragments of it I happen to stumble across for as long as possible.”
His fingers trailed her cheek to cup her chin. In the span of a heartbeat, his face changed. From beautiful man to skeletal beast then back to beautiful man. A chill coiled around her soul, deep and cold as a winter storm. Who—what—was this guy?

“Do you feel it too?”

Kalila’s heartbeat rumbled in her ears, kicked at her throat. Her fingers jerked with a fierce need to touch him. Instead, she fisted the blanket. Admit nothing to the enemy. Yet the urge to nestle her cheek into his palm and purr grappled with reason. She had to take control before she did something stupid.

CJ blames her love for reading and all things Medieval on her father, who plied her often with fantasy novels ranging from Sir Lloyd Alexander to Piers Anthony.  Her love for romance, however, lies completely at the feet of her best friend Michelle, who dared to give her a romance novel for her birthday.  She smiled, politely said thank you, and tossed it in the corner, where it gathered dust.  In a moment of desperation, when only the revolting romance remained in her almost-always toppling stack of awaiting books, she sucked it up and read the romance.  Doomed.

She started writing fantasy and paranormal romance for the cathartic experience, decided she liked it, and after two overlong, horribly written novels joined RWA and the Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal special interest chapter.  Best classes and critique groups ever.  Double doomed.  Now, writing is a necessity, not just a hobby.

In her spare time, when she’s not writing or reading or actually working, CJ might be found in the dojang (4th Dan Black Belt, baby), rooting on the Mariners (who will some day win the World Series), working out (P90X, anyone?), gardening (a little dirt never hurt anyone), or playing Music of the Night on the piano (without mask or cape). She lives in Oregon with her fabulous husband and daughter. Not to mention her minions, a herd of cats.

WONDERFULLY WICKED is CJ's Burright's first novel.
