Book Shelf: Stalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper #1) by Kerri Maniscalco

Presented by James Patterson's new children's imprint, this deliciously creepy horror novel has a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion...

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling, #1 New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

Review:

Kerri Maniscalco’s debut novel Stalking Jack the Ripper is an absolutely sensational novel that introduces readers to a powerfully told adventure rich in history and featuring a strong willed protagonist, electric chemistry and a murder mystery you will be dying to get to the bottom of.

There’s a killer stalking the streets of Whitechapel, London and seventeen year old Audrey Rose Wadsworth is determined to get to the bottom of it! As the daughter of a lord, Audrey Rose leads a life of privilege but it’s not the social teas and silk finery that she longs for; it’s the stolen moments alongside her Uncle in his laboratory studying forensic medicine. When her Uncle is brought in to offer assistance in a series of gruesome murders being carried out in London, Audrey Rose finds herself drawn into the mystery surrounding the violent deaths and begins to wonder if the killer is closer to home than she wishes possible…..

It’s no secret that Stalking Jack the Ripper has been a wildly enjoyed novel since its release and having finally gotten around to reading Kerri Maniscalco’s debut myself, I can certainly see why. Stalking Jack the Ripper was simply superb! This novel captured my imagination from the opening chapter and I was thoroughly entranced by this vivid and wonderfully depicted world of 19th century London as Maniscalo weaves together the history of infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper with her own harrowing storyline.

Kerri Maniscalo brings heroine Audrey Rose and the world she inhabits to life with precise and often grisly attention to detail. I found myself immersed in Audrey Rose’s world and felt that Maniscalo did a fantastic job with the setting and atmosphere within the story. Detailed but authentic and realistic descriptions of corpses and the brutality shown by Jack the Ripper heightens the senses and offers a really enthralling ambience to the novel. It’s impossible not to become lost in the scene and the events currently taking place.

Protagonist Audrey Rose was someone who I really enjoyed following. Living in a day where women of her class were expected to be shy and demure, she was curious and inquisitive. I felt that Audrey Rose was intelligent and determined and I loved that she took an initiative and dared to be more than what societies opinion of her was. Her determination and attitude really appealed to me and I thoroughly enjoyed joining her on her journey to help her Uncle determined who was Jack the Ripper.

Amidst the mystery and unease of the killings, author Kerri Maniscalo also manages to include just the perfect enough amount of romantic entanglement within the story in the form of Thomas Creswell, a student of Audrey Rose’s Uncle and someone who managed to get under our heroines skin. Thomas really was charming in his arrogant way and the banter and flirtations exchanged between Audrey Rose and he made for some fabulous reading. The chemistry is undeniable and as their relationship continues to build I can only imagine where Maniscalo plans to take them together.

Racing towards a shocking ending, Stalking Jack the Ripper was a delectable and addictive novel. Kerri Maniscalo seems to hit every nail on the head and as this novel comes to an end, I'm ready to begin Audrey Rose and Thomas's next story, Hunting Count Dracula straight away! Fantastic reading!
