Waiting on Wednesday #113

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Built by Jay Crownover
Releases on: January 5th 2016

From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes an electrifying new spin-off series,Saints of Denver, featuring all the characters fans have been dying to read about.

Sayer Cole and Zeb Fuller couldn’t be more different. She’s country club and fine-dining, he’s cell-block and sawdust. Sayer spends her days in litigation, while Zeb spends his working with his hands. She’s French silk, he’s all denim and flannel.

Zeb’s wanted the stunning blonde since the moment he laid eyes on her. It doesn't matter how many smooth moves he makes, the reserved lawyer seems determinedly oblivious to his interest—either that or she doesn't return it. Sayer is certain the rough, hard, hot-as-hell Zeb could never want someone as closed off and restrained as she is, which is a shame because something tells her he might be the guy to finally melt her icy exterior.

But just as things start to heat up, Zeb is blindsided by a life altering moment from his past. He needs Sayer’s professional help to right a wrong and to save more than himself. He can’t risk what’s at stake just because his attraction to Sayer feels all consuming. But as these opposites dig in for the fight of their lives, battling together to save a family, the steam created when fire and ice collide can no longer be ignored.

Thoughts:
Having recently read, finished and loved Jay Crownover's Marked Men series I'm soooooo excited for the spin-off series, Saints of Denver and I cannot wait to read Sayer and Zeb's story Built. I'm super excited to see these two fall in love. Eeep!

What do you think of Built? Have you read Jay Crownover's books before?
And what are YOU waiting on this week?

Book Shelf: Prophecy (Legacy #2) by Ellery A. Kane

Over a year has passed since Lex Knightley journeyed alone into desolate San Francisco. The Guardian Force is disbanded, emotion-altering drugs banned, and citizens allowed to return to the seemingly resurrected city.

For Lex, life is almost normal, but normal is precarious. Normal has a way of falling apart.

One rainy night changes everything. Out on parole, Quin McAllister’s father is arrested for the brutal murder of his new wife. As the Resistance resurges, claiming a conspiracy, Lex doesn’t know what—or who—to believe. When old enemies resurface in new disguises and trusted friends start keeping secrets, normal splits right down the middle, leaving Lex and Quin on opposite sides.

Prophecy—the second novel of Ellery Kane’s Legacy trilogy—continues the story of Lex and Quin, testing the strength of friendship, forgiveness, and love.

Review:

Prophecy is the second book in the Legacy trilogy by Ellery A. Kane and takes readers on another suspenseful, mysterious and riveting journey that will leave you guessing until the very end.

Life for Lex Knightly has changed a lot since the events of the first book Legacy. More than a year has passed since Lex, Quin and their friends managed to help disable the Guardian Force and restore their fragile world to some sense of normalcy. Yet, their world begins unravelling once again when Quin's recently paroled father, George McAllister is arrested and charged with the murder of his new wife Shelley. Torn between supporting Quin and her own doubts about George's innocence, Lex finds herself struggling. As their relationship frays, Lex and Quin drift apart, but when old enemies resurface with dangerous new motives, things take on a whole new level of danger when it becomes clear that those in power still pose a threat to not only the happiness of Lex and those she loves, but their very lives......

Prophecy kicks off more than a year after the last book, and I was surprised to see how much has changed. Ellery A. Kane has a lot of tricks up her sleeve as Prophecy mainly focuses around Quin's father and his court trial, but also manages to make you question what else is going on with the bigger corporations and companies now that most emotion altering drugs have been banned from San Francisco.

The characters have come a long way since the last book and I was thrilled to see how much they've changed. Emotions and feelings are tested in this book as loyalties and the strength of the love Lex and Quin share are repeatedly put to the test. Kane manages to make her characters, most importantly Lex, face a lot of truths and not everyone manage to come out unaffected.

Well written and well paced, Prophecy was an enjoyable read that made me feel for Lex and many of the other characters. Old faces blend with new and Kane manages to keep you on your toes as well as questioning Quin's dads innocence yourself. Yet in true Kane style, we soon learn that not everything is as it seems and I'm personally really excited to discover what implications our discoveries in Prophecy have in the third and final book Revelation!

Book Shelf: The Revolution of Ivy (The Book of Ivy #2) by Amy Engel

Ivy Westfall is beyond the fence and she is alone. Abandoned by her family and separated from Bishop Lattimer, Ivy must find a way to survive on her own in a land filled with countless dangers, both human and natural. She has traded a more civilized type of cruelty--forced marriages and murder plots--for the bare-knuckled brutality required to survive outside Westfall's borders.

But there is hope beyond the fence, as well. And when Bishop reappears in Ivy's life, she must decide if returning to Westfall to take a final stand for what she believes is right is worth losing everything she's fought for.

Review:

The Revolution of Ivy is the stunning follow up to Amy Engel’s debut novel The Book of Ivy, and manages to give its predecessor a run for its money with tantalising romance, high stakes and fantastic action.

After the events of the first book, Ivy Westfall finds herself lost and desolate; banished beyond the fence of Westfall and facing a harsh, unforgiving new environment. Having been torn from her family, and worst of all her husband Bishop, Ivy struggles in the barren world, but is surprised to learn of a society of people who have made the world outside the fence their home. Chances rise when Ivy is joined by Bishop on the outside and the two quickly settle into a routine with their new friends. Yet their happiness in an unexpected place is threatened when chaos erupts in Westfall and Ivy and Bishop must head back in order to stop the ones they love from killing each other and destroying Westfall forever……

After adoring The Book of Ivy so much last year, I was ecstatic to jump straight into The Revolution of Ivy and I’m thrilled to say Amy Engel doesn’t disappoint. The Revolution of Ivy is really rich in romance between Ivy and Bishop, something I completely gobbled up. They have so much to overcome, especially considering Ivy’s admissions at the end of the last book about her feelings for Bishop. And yet, both Ivy and Bishop managed to come a long way over the course of The Revolution of Ivy as a couple and really blossomed. There were some hard times, but Bishop’s fierce dedication and love for Ivy forced the couple to decide what they wanted and fight for it; something that made for really fabulous reading.

I’ve fallen so deeply in love with both Ivy and Bishop as characters since reading this duology. They make a great couple but I also enjoy them individually. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing Ivy get out from under her family and find her own happiness amidst this dystopian world. She’s become an even more brilliant heroine to follow.

The Revolution of Ivy is steadily paced novel, faster at some moments than others, but is a really great follow-up that is sure to satisfy. I’m sad to say goodbye to Ivy and Bishop if this is in fact the end to their story but have loved following them, and certainly wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to re-visit the world within the series if the chance ever arose. I’m sure either Ash or Caleb have a story to tell! Highly recommend!

My Recommendation: This is a BRILLIANT dystopian series and a MUST READ!
Cover: I think it's beautiful and perfect with the first one.

Will I read sequel/continue with series: As far as I'm aware this is the final book in this series, but I look forward to reading more from Amy Engel in the future!

Review:

Dangerous Lies is the latest release from best-selling author Becca Fitzpatrick and is a surprisingly warm read that features a lovely coming of age story and wonderful character growth.

Everything about Stella Gordon is a lie. Her name, her life, her entire history. Everything about her is a carefully crafted lie orcastrated by the United States government after Stella witnessed a violent crime and was put into witness protection following the arrest of the man she saw kill her mother’s drug dealer. Ripped away from her home, her boyfriend, and her life in Philadelphia, Stella is sent to small town Thunder Basin, Nebraska to hide out. Stella just wants her life to return to normal and despises the thought of being stuck in Thunder Basin....but with the help of some super friendly locals, her tough-as-nails "foster mother" Carmina and her sexy next-door neighbour Chet, Stella soon begins to find unexpected happiness. But what happens when the secrets Stella keeps come back to haunt her? Will she and those she cares about pay for her past mistakes?

Having now finished this book, I'm finding it really hard to categories Dangerous Lies. Despite its premise, it’s not really a mystery or a thriller per say, despite our heroine’s connection to a violent crime. It actually comes across more as a coming of age story at times and merges with a nice romance set in a small country town in Nebraska.

Dangerous Lies is a steadily paced novel and isn’t overly fast. Some readers may find the beginning slow, but those who persevere will be rewarded with a warm and enjoyable read, tinged with mystery and the possibility of danger. Becca Fitzpatrick always satisfies and Dangerous Lies is no exception; if you’re anything like myself, you’ll be sucked into the characters world within Thunder Basin after a few chapters and be hopeful things work out for Stella.

Yet in saying that, in the beginning I very much loathed Stella. I mean, loathed her. She came across as spoilt and selfish and infinitely ungrateful. And yet, as the story went on, we began to understand the life she’d led and what forced her to become so guarded and jaded. We learnt about what went on behind closed doors of her high society life, and as Stella took steps forward and began to grow, I ended up liking her much more. By the end of Dangerous Lies, she was almost a completely different character who had grown so much—and I liked this.

The romance within Dangerous Lies as also something I did enjoy. Fitzpatrick starts Stella and Chet out as friends who despite their obvious attraction, slowly develop their relationship. Stella is very conflicted as technically she had a boyfriend prior to her move to Thunder Basin, so her reluctance to "cheat" on him is the main conflict behind her and Chet’s relationship.

I enjoyed the vast array of characters who called Thunder Basin home; most notably Carmina, Chet and Inny. Personally I would love to explore them some more if the chance ever arose. Becca Fitzpatrick manages to make the small country town of Thunder Basin a place I would love to visit (if it existed in real life that is!) with its swimming holes, carhops and carnival fun!

Overall a good read, Dangerous Lies admittedly starts slow, but then picks up to be an enjoyable tale. Worth a read!
