Each and every day you write another paragraph, another page, another chapter. The story, the plot….even the ending, are all up to you and often when you first set out, you yourself have no clue where you’re going to end up....Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07514580405061834469noreply@blogger.comBlogger2304125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6100229111647446880.post-67480427592816119242019-12-29T09:00:00.000+11:002019-12-29T09:00:00.450+11:00I'm On Vacation!

From Feather.....

“You wouldn’t like your soul the way it was if you knew what it meant,” I said.

“What it meant?” Jarod dipped his stubble-coated chin into his neck. “What does it mean, Feather?”

I
was about to feed him a basic explanation, the one we were allowed to
share with humans, when my mind caught up with the word he’d just
uttered. Feather. The pounding in my chest migrated to my temples. “Why
did you call me that?”

“Why did I call you what?”

“You just called her Feather,” Tristan supplied.

Time stretched on endlessly before Jarod said, “Because she looks soft and spineless. Like a feather.”

I
should’ve winced or balked at the use of the word soft—first Tristan,
now Jarod . . . couldn’t I be described any other way?—but the nickname
struck too close to home. “Worms are spineless; feathers have shafts.”

“Shafts aren’t spines.” A smile played on Jarod’s lips. “But if you’d rather I call you Worm—”

“No! Feather’s fine.” I licked my lips. “Does this mean you’ll give me a second chance?”

“Well, you’re nicer to look at than Tristan.”

“Salaud,” Tristan cursed, but his chuckling told me he wasn’t angry.

Jarod pivoted toward the porte-cochère. “This should be amusing.”

This
wouldn’t be amusing. Not in the least. But if I could get him to amend
just one of his terrible ways, then it would be worth it.
USA TODAY bestselling author Olivia Wildenstein grew up in New York
City, the daughter of a French father with a great sense of humor, and a
Swedish mother whom she speaks to at least three times a day. She chose
Brown University to complete her
undergraduate studies and earned a bachelor’s in comparative
literature. After designing jewelry for a few years, Wildenstein traded
in her tools for a laptop computer and a very comfortable chair. This
line of work made more sense, considering her college degree.
Review:

Feather is Olivia Wildenstein’s latest release and is a passionate and whimsical angel romance, loosely based on the classic Romeo and Juliet tale.

Twenty-one-year-old angel Leigh has only one month left to earn her missing feathers before she loses her wings forever. Desperate to ensure she ascends to the Heavenly realm, Leigh decides to take on a sinner whose shot at redemption is almost non-existent; twenty-six year old Parisian Mafia leader Jarod Adler and the worst kind of sinner….a Triple. If Leigh can convince Jarod to complete a single act of kindness she’ll gain 100 feathers—more than enough to ascend. What Leigh isn’t counting on is Jarod’s dark charm drawing her in and actually costing her feathers. Leigh’s determined to save Jarod’s soul, but as she finds herself falling for the unexpected sinner, Leigh discovers that Jarod is connected to her world in ways she never could have imagined. Falling in love was never the plan but when it becomes clear a future without Jarod is in the cards if she can’t save him, Leigh will need to decide who she is and what she truly wants if she has any chance at true happiness.

As always, Olivia Wildenstein is an author who never fails to impress. Her Lost Clan series will forever remain a favourite of mine and Feather just proves that she has more incredible stories up her sleave. Initially I was under the impression Feather was to be a standalone tale, but after reading the novel I’m excited about it being a part of a series and continuing on with Celestial to feature Feather supporting character Celeste.

Feather introduces readers to Leigh, a fletchling angel who has spent her life helping sinners in an effort to complete her wings and ascend to Elysium, the land of angels. Leigh is a kind and wholesome individual. She genuinely believes everyone can be saved and is deserving of such which is why she decides to take on a sinner long thought unsavable by her fellow angels. Admittedly there is a personal motivation behind Leigh’s decision, but I won’t share too much of this to avoid spoilers.

I thought Leigh was a sweet protagonist to follow. She believed in love and honestly wanted to help those under her care. I really liked Olivia Wildenstein’s take on angels and am intrigued by the hierarchy. I liked that Leigh wanted things to be different and enjoyed seeing her grow as Jarod opened her eyes to passion and the smaller things in life.

Intermingled with aspects of the traditional Romeo and Juliet story, Feather was a solid read from Olivia Wildenstein. Set in the beautiful city of Paris, Feather is woven together with culture and life as Wildenstein creates an electric and steamy love story. I’m entranced with the world and characters and hope to see more of Asher, Celeste and even Eve in future tales!

Feather is definitely worth a read for those looking for an angel tale with a twist. Imbrued with passion and promise, Feather builds to a climatic ending and leaves me eager to see what Olivia Wildenstein has planned in this new series next!
Spencer did not plan to work on her birthday. She didn’t plan a lot of things, but they
happened anyway. Like, when she touched a guy and he turned into a gold

She didn’t plan to see her
life forever changed by one simple act, and it still happened anyway.

What Spencer doesn’t know is why. Why is all this happening to her? Why does she have the power to turn people into gold all of a sudden. Who is she really?
The Last Atlantian.....

Steamy fog sprayed from the espresso machine as Spencer slammed the
lever all the way down. She shouldn’t have had to work, today of all
days. But the universe obviously hated her and it was punishing her.

That was the only explanation.

“Stop moping,” her best friend Cia said, shoving a tray of mugs beside the gurgling coffee machine. “Your boyfriend’s here.”

Spencer
groaned and rolled her eyes. She tried not to be angry with her friend
but refused to look at her. It was all right to be upset, but not good
to show it. Although, technically her shift hadn’t even started yet, but
Cia’s cute friend just had to have a latte and couldn’t wait, so Cia
let him in, without asking Spencer first.

This left just enough
time for him to show up and squeeze his skinny frame through the doors,
according to Cia. Spencer would bet that Cia held the door open and even
waved him over.

“Not my boyfriend,” Spencer told her through gritted teeth.

“But
does he know that?” Cia asked, smirking in that annoying way she did.
One side of her mouth turned up and her brown eyes went dark, almost
black.

Spencer looked around the machine to see she was right.
Josh, she thought his name was, stood at the counter taking off his
gloves, eyes finding hers instantly. A smile lit up his face, although
his cheeks had a slight color from the cooler December air. Spencer only
nodded and went back to finishing up the latte order.

Josh was
kind of cute, light eyes, strong chin. Although he had to be in his
mid-twenties and he was just a touch creepy. He was in here every day
and he stared when he thought she wasn’t looking. He would sip at his
coffee and she’d feel his grey eyes on her. And he’d always be toying
with this pretty blue pendant he wore on a black rope around his neck.
Spencer only caught a glimpse of it one time, because he kept it hidden
under his shirt or in his hand most of the time, but it was pretty. Some
pitchfork looking thing.

“She will be right with you, Jeremy. She’s just finishing up an order.”

Jeremy, that was his name. Right. She never remembered his name.

Yeah,
an order that I shouldn’t have to make for another… Spencer’s eyes went
to the little clock on the wall in the back. Half an hour.

Spencer just wished that this guy would let someone else serve him, but no. If she was on shift, he would wait for her.

Why
did she have to work today? At least, no one told him it was her
birthday today. For some reason, she didn’t want him to know.

As
luck would have it, the next words Cia uttered were, “She’s grumpy
because she had to work on her birthday.” Spencer noticed that Cia
leaned in close to him and pretended to whisper, even though Spencer
heard her quite clearly.

Mainly because there were four people in the shop and only one person actually working.

“On her birthday? That’s too bad.” Jeremy smiled from ear to ear, running his thin fingers through his thick, black hair.

Yeah, and I thought I was lucky enough to have the day off school today. Then Cia’s parents had to call and shatter that hope.

Spencer
decided she might as well get this part of her day over with so she
could celebrate her day, tossed a lid on the latte, called out for Cia’s
friend and then made her way over to Jeremy.

She offered him a
smile, but it was robotic at best. Normally, she dismissed Jeremy’s
actions as a bored guy with nothing better to do, but today, she didn’t
feel like dealing with him. She just wanted to go out and hang out with
her friends, do fun stuff. After all, she was seventeen today. But when
her parents wouldn’t help her get a car, she decided that she’d get the
thing herself. Fast forward to today, and she was stuck working.

“Hi,
what can I get for you?” she asked, finger hovering over the computer
screen, taking in the scent of his cologne. It wasn’t terrible, but it
was too much, too powerful. It almost made her gag.

“No polite chitchat today?” he questioned, still smirking.

Spencer
shuffled uncomfortably. The way he was looking at her made her insides
crawl. Couldn’t her best friend in the whole world see how uncomfortable
this guy made her? “Bad day. Would you like the usual?”

“Plain black. Straight cup of joe.”

“Anything else?”

His
smile faltered a bit, but he still aimed his grey eyes at her and he
was leaning over the counter so he could be closer to her. Seriously,
Cia should see something is wrong here. Thanks for nothing, Cia. “I
don’t suppose you’d give me your number.”

A loud bang from behind Spencer made her jump. Cia called out, “Sorry.”

Spencer
used the opportunity to sneak away and grab Jeremy/Josh’s coffee order.
On the off chance that he’d forget what he asked and she’d be home free
by the time she slinked back over to the counter to bring him his
coffee.

Spencer poured, noticing her hand was shaking. Normally
she didn’t let it get to her but today seemed different. She couldn’t
say why, but he seemed to crawl deeper under her skin today. She
shivered and prayed it was almost time to open the shop. With people
impatiently waiting on their caffeine fix, she didn’t have time to talk
to him and Spencer liked it that way.

She stalled as long as she
could. When Cia came out from the back with a stack of to-go cups,
Spencer turned and gave the guy his coffee. He held out a twenty and she
took it silently, hoping they didn’t have to talk anymore.

But then Cia went back to the back of the shop.

Spencer
gave the guy a strained smile as she reached over to give him his
change. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer to him. “You should
give me your number, Spencer. We’ve been dancing in circles for too
long,” he whispered.

Spencer’s heartrate changed, sped up. She
felt herself begin to sweat and shallow breaths were the only ones to
reach her lungs. He was so close she could see his pupils dilate.

She tried to jerk her arm free, but he refused to let go.

“Just give me your number, Spencer. No need to play shy.”

Spencer shook her head and grabbed his hand to remove it.

It
all happened so quickly, she could have blinked and missed the entire
moment. Josh… or Jeremy… or whatever his name was, stood before her, a
six-foot solid gold statue. The grey eyes that had just dilated in need
for her and creeped her out, were now cold, metal and unseeing. A gasp
slipped from her throat. She wanted to scream or cry. She wasn’t sure
which.

The hand gripping her arm hurt and that’s where she
decided to focus. It took her a few tries to twist her wrist from his
grasp, but as soon as she shook loose and jumped back, Cia came back to
the front of the shop.

She squealed and dropped the handful of
coffee bags she’d been holding. “What the heck happened here? I run to
the back for supplies and suddenly there’s a gold statue at the
counter.” She stared at the statue, not looking over and seeing the
terror on her best friend’s face.

Spencer couldn’t speak. She
couldn’t open her mouth to form words. Her brain wouldn’t even form any
words. If it was, it wasn’t relaying the message to her mouth.

Finally,
Cia turned to Spencer and must have noticed the horror on her face. She
took a step closer, kicking at one of the coffee bags. Spencer watched
it slide along the tile until it hit the baseboard and bounce less than a
centimeter. She backed away from Cia, for her own good. It was too
risky and Spencer didn’t want to be touched. She didn’t understand what
had happened and there was no way she’d risk hurting her best friend.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

Spencer
shook her head and shrugged. “I… I-I think I did that to him.” Spencer
pointed, but she couldn’t quite look at the guy… the statue. “He…
grabbed me and… I don’t know.”

“Him?” Cia’s eyes went from the
statue to her friend and back. “Is that… That’s Jeremy?” She squinted at
the statue and then it seemed like she was finally starting to
understand. “He grabbed you?”
Spencer nodded, unable to continue speaking. Tears filled her eyes, causing her vision to blur.

“Good thing we haven’t opened yet,” Cia muttered. “Hey, do you think maybe we could melt him down and sell him?”

Review:

Assassin’s Menace is the third instalment in the Assassin’s Magic series by Everly Frost and introduces readers to a new voice and heroine in this kick-ass and riveting adventure full of action, romance and edge of your seat moments.

Bookworm Grace Kennedy isn’t who she appears, and she’s spent a lot of time and effort ensuring this is the case. No one would suspect that she’s actually a killer and she intends to keep it that way--- hoping to escape her violent past as much as possible. Then Grace unwittingly gets between an assassin and his target, becoming prey to Boston’s most vicious legion of killers. Help comes in the unexpected form of Cain Carter, ruthless millionaire and someone who is much more than he seems. Cain is determined to keep Grace alive even if it means going against his brother assassins, but for a girl who has never known kindness, Grace is sure Cain’s help comes with strings. Sexy as hell, Cain could become Grace’s weakness if she lets him, but with unforeseen powers simmering inside her, trusting Cain my be Grace’s only choice….if only she can trust him with her heart too.

Can I just say; Everly Frost is the bomb! Seriously this woman knows how to get my blood pumping and the adrenaline running with her edge-of-your-seat stories and exhilarating endings. Assassin’s Menace is the third instalment (book number 2.5 if you want to be specific) in Frost’s sensational Assassin’s Magic series and takes place between Assassin’s Mask and the upcoming final novel, Assassin’s Maze.

Stepping away from normal protagonist Hunter for the first time, Assassin’s Menace introduces readers to Grace Kennedy, an equally awesome and kick-ass heroine who quickly captured my heart with her determination, strength and capability. I’ll try not to give away spoilers where I can, but Grace is vital to Frost’s overall series, something that was fairly obvious to me heading into the novel. Readers of the series should catch on pretty quickly why and this will make it all super exciting as you discover Grace and what she can do.

It was fabulous to finally see Cain Carter meet his match in Assassin’s Menace and I couldn’t be happier that he was paired with Grace. Theirs is a romance that builds beautifully, and their chemistry is electric and driven. You knew where it was heading but that didn’t make seeing them fall for one another any less satisfying.

Everything really comes together with Assassin’s Menace. Everly Frost ties previous storyline arc’s together and allows the readers to discover where she was heading with certain hints and titbits that were suggested in the previous novels. I loved the inclusion of Cain’s sister Parker who is a real sweetie—and someone I’m hoping will be paired with Lutz Logan—and thought her inclusion to the story was really adorable.

Thrilling and so very good, Assassin’s Menace was another brilliant read in a series I genuinely adore. I can’t wait to see what Everly Frost has planned for the fourth and final instalment—I have no doubt it will be spectacular!
From Renegade......

Renny’s lip twitches, and he nods toward his black motorcycle. “Get on. I’ll try my best to get you there on time.”

“Thank
you, Renny,” I say, grabbing my handbag from my car and crossing the
strap over my body. I have my purse, ID and credit cards; anything else
can be bought.

“Have you ever ridden before?” he asks as he helps me climb on, his large hands on my waist sending shivers up my spine.

“Yeah,
I have actually,” I tell him, smiling fondly, remembering the times I’d
ride with my cousin before he passed away. “On the back of one,
anyway.”

“Okay,” he murmurs, studying me with a slightly narrowed
gaze. I’ve always had a weakness for men with blue eyes, but suddenly
brown is looking extremely appealing.

“I’ll skip the debrief
then. We need to stop at the clubhouse first, but then we will head off.
You have the address of where you need to be?”

“Yeah, I do,” I reply, reciting the name and address of the hospital to him.

He
nods and hands me his spare helmet. “I’ll have your car towed to the
clubhouse and it should be ready by the time we get back from Vegas.”

“That’s great. Thank you,” I say, feeling grateful it’s one less thing to worry about. “I just need to get there.”

The
thought of Ariel in labor alone makes me feel sick to my stomach. The
baby decided to come two weeks early, otherwise I would have been with
her this entire time. The father is my sister’s ex and wants nothing to
do with the baby, which makes my role even more important.

Renny gets on in front of me and fires up the engine. “Let’s do it then.”
Feeling
awkward, I put the helmet on and hold on to the back of his leather
vest, very aware of my personal space, knowing that I’m about to be
pressed up against this man for the next few hours at least. I’m not
exactly sure how I’ve found myself in this situation, or how this Renny
ended up being my knight in shining armor, but I’m glad he was around.

I’ve
heard a lot of things about the MC—like that they engage in criminal
activities and are dangerous womanizers. I know they are judged in the
community and that no one wants them here, but I want to form my own
opinion. Even the real estate agent who sold me my house told me that he
wished they would move away, because they are nothing but trouble.

But from what Renny is doing for me, they don’t seem too bad.

Or at least I hope they aren’t.

Because I just signed up for the next few hours at their mercy.

Ariel, I’m coming.

Renegade is the second novel in Chantal Fernando’s Knights of Fury MC series and is another fun and entertaining biker romance.

Good girl Isabella wouldn’t miss the birth of her sisters first baby for anything. So when her car breaks down and one of the bikers from next door offers her a lift to Vegas, it’s too tempting too pass up. Besides, travelling with her arms wrapped around sexy Renny, otherwise known as Renegade, isn’t exactly a bad way to travel. After all, living next to the Knights of Fury MC has always left Izzy curious. And during a wild night in Vegas, she gets a firsthand taste…..although not the way she expected. When drinks turn into dares, Izzy wakes up the following morning; married. To Renny. Reeling from her cliché Vegas experience, an annulment should be the next step…..but nothing endangers a potential annulment more than a sexy new husband who is also unexpectedly sweet. When Isabella and Renny give into the attraction that simmers between them, Izzy will need to decide if outlaw life is something she can handle….or if she’s in over her head.

Chantal Fernando is back with another enjoyable instalment in her Knights of Fury MC series. Proving once again she knows what she is doing with biker novels, Fernando writes an entertaining and effortless tale with romance, humour and action. So far this series has included two delightful tales that are quick reads and easily leave me satisfied---while also craving more.

Renegade unfolds through the eyes of Isabella, the next-door neighbour of the Knights of Fury Motorcycle Club and a kindhearted and easy to follow protagonist. Isabella is a friendly and nice young woman who finds herself drawn into the outlaw world when a night out in Vegas ends with her married to Renny, a member of the Knights of Fury. It was a cliché situation Izzy found herself in—drunkenly married in Vegas—but boy was it still fun to read about.

Renny was a softer male lead than I’ve seen in Chantal Fernando’s novels lately. He was more laid back and easy going. Don’t get me wrong---he was all for his woman, but he didn’t come across as being as alpha as many of the other club members do. He had a sweet relationship with Isabella. It was perfectly balanced with sexy moments, angst and softness.

As I said after I reading Saint, I’m looking forward to seeing some of the other Knights of Fury members get stories, but I’ll now add two more names to the list---Temper’s brother Trade and Isabella’s sister Ariel. I think they were super adorable and Chantal Fernando needs to give them a tale together!

Fast reading but enjoyable from start to finish Renegade was another great MC tale from Chantal Fernando and has me looking forward for when she will release the next instalment in the series---hope it’s soon because I need more!
Review:

The Queen of Nothing is the tantalizing and beguiling final novel in The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black and is a phenomenal way to conclude what has been a breathtaking series from the very first page to the very last.

After being crowned Queen of Faerie and subsequently exiled by her wicked husband King Cardan, Jude Duarte spends her time in the mortal world watching television with her brother Oak and sister Vivi and doing the odd job for the fae folk that live within the human realm. Having spent her life in the Fae world, a life in the human one is bland and uneventful….until her twin Taryn arrives as asks Jude for a favour. Taryn is in trouble and to help her, Jude will have to return to the world of Faerie. This means facing Cardan, whose betrayal still hurts but who Jude can’t help but still love despite his actions. When a curse is unveiled, Jude has no choice but become the first ever mortal Queen of Faerie to save Cardan and the world she reluctantly loves…..

Holly Black has entranced me with this series from the very moment I began reading The Cruel Prince. The beautifully written storyline, enchanting setting and layered, multi-dimensional characters bring the series to life with poise and excitement. I honestly believe that nothing I can say will do this series justice and eloquently describe how much I love and adore it. It genuinely does deserve all the hype surrounding it and is without a doubt deserving its place as one of the best fae series out there.

Continuing to follow mortal girl Jude, The Queen of Nothing picks up after the shocking conclusion of the previous novel and begins by detailing Jude’s time in exile. Banished from her home in the world of Faerie, Jude is struggling to assimilate in the mortal realm and yearns for the place from which she was expelled. Jude has been a fabulous protagonist from the very beginning of the series and I have highly enjoyed following her with each novel. Jude is a mortal in a world of wicked fae. At a disadvantage thanks to her human weakness and fragility, Jude has had to be as cunning and calculated as her fae companions, if not more so, in order to survive. Jude’s intelligence, capability and determination is something to be admired. As does her love for her family and those within her inner circle. I feel that Jude has grown into a formable young woman and now Queen over the course of the series and Holly Black has done her a real service writing her in such a manner.

Throughout the trilogy Jude’s nemesis, love interest and reluctant alley has been Cardan, former Prince of Faerie and now High King. What can I say about Cardan other than that I love him? I love him with his wickedly deceptive and devious nature. With his cheeky attitude and laid back approach; his reluctantly vulnerable and unexpectedly loyal personality. I love him in all his cunning and calculating magnitude; in all his glory. I just love Cardan and think he has been a fabulous character within the series to push Jude and fight Jude and fall in love with Jude.

Holly Black has written one hell of a romance with Jude and Cardan. Never have I seen two people be so good for and so bad for each other. They have been enemies and allies; have loathed and now loved one another. They’ve pushed and pulled; fought and bickered. Betrayed and supported one another. And it’s been absolutely thrilling to watch unfold! Their chemistry has been undeniable from day one. Black has slowly built their relationship from the first novel as childhood enemies and classmates, to a King and Queen who are now deeply in love with each other to a fault. There’s no pretty words or sugary promises between them—their feelings are crushing and awkward and raw……but I really like this. I think it suits who are as individuals and now as a couple.

Throughout the entire series the twists, turns, shocks and surprises have always kept coming. Eloquently detailing the story perfectly, author Holly Black has proven once again why she is one of the Queen’s of the fae with The Folk of the Air. As addictive and beguiling as its predecessors, The Queen of Nothing brings the series to an end in spectacular fashion with an exciting but satisfying ending. Though I’m sad to see the trilogy conclude, I look forward to reliving Jude and Cardan’s story time and time again and cannot recommend this series enough!

Saint is the first novel in Chantal Fernando’s new MC series Knights of Fury and is a quick and engaging biker romance that will entertaining from beginning to end.

Five years ago, Skylar O’Conner lost the only father figure she had ever known when her mother took her and left her then husband----Sky’s stepfather and president of the Knights of Fury Motorcycle Club. Losing the love of her father and his band of brothers hurt but Sky has tried her best to put the past behind her; until she’s contacted by her childhood crush and Club member Saint who writes her a letter……from prison. Once upon a time Saint was Sky’s everything and she dreamed of the day when the older prospect would see her as more than just a schoolgirl with a crush. Hearing from him now reawakens not only the desire she once harboured as a girl, but all the questions Sky has about why she mother and her left. As Sky sets out to find out the truth, Saint’s steadfast love and loyalty may be the only thing that will keep her up when her whole world begins crashing down.

I have to be honest; I don’t read a lot of biker novels. I know that MC novels have become widely popular in recent times, but of the ones I’ve given a go I find them too vulgar and violent for my tastes. So I tend to steer clear of them, but not Chantal Ferdando’s novels. I love the way she is able to blend the drama and angst of a MC novel with a passionate love story. Fernando manages to write sex, drama and passion perfectly as far as I’m concerned. I don’t hesitate to pick up one of her MC novels and having adored the Wind Dragon’s MC and Cursed Ravens MC, I’m always super excited to discover she has a new one coming out.

Which leads me to Saint, the first novel in her new Knights of Fury MC series and the start of what I have no doubt is going to be another fabulous biker series with tangible characters and camaraderie to die for. Told through the eyes of twenty-one year old Skylar, Saint is an entertaining and enjoyable romance. A quick but well told story, Saint follows likable characters and has all the drama, angst, sizzling and sex readers could want.

Protagonist Sky was easy to follow. Her family situation was all kinds of messed up. Despite being a sweet albeit somewhat naïve person, the way in which Sky was treated by her mother was heartbreaking. A parent—especially a mother—is meant to be there to protect their child and instead Sky’s mother was a jealous and resentful woman whose actions towards her daughter were abhorrent. I felt so bad for Sky and couldn’t understand how her mother could treat her as she did. The saddest part is that I know this happens in real life, so I found myself appreciating the happiness Sky found all the more for that.

I’m really excited for Chantal Fernando to continue this series. She’s already introduced me to club members I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing feature; Renny, Dee, Temper….I think they will all make great leading men when their time comes and I can’t wait to see it happen. Fun, romance and effortless reading, Saint was a great kickstart to a new MC series from Chantal Fernando!
Years ago, Elle—never call her Cinderella—escaped her evil step family

witches. Although she still must live in hiding from her evil
stepfamily, Elle has always found ways to get whatever her heart
desires.

That is, until Alec Le Charme.

Alec is the heir to the Le Charme dynasty of high-end jewelers. He’s
also kind, charismatic, has a knee-melting smile. Elle has fallen for
him, hard. Unfortunately, thanks to Elle’s evil step family, Alec
is absolutely off limits. In fact, if Elle and Alec
so much as kiss, it will start a magical chain reaction that would end in powerful factions of witches and wizards going to war. As a result, Elle and Alec vow to stay friends, no matter what. Then West Lake Prep holds a masquerade ball. Identities get mixed
up and forbidden kisses are finally shared.

Time for the Magicorum to go to war, and for Elle to confront her hidden past in ways she never thought possible.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Thoughts On... Where To Find Good Books

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">By Christina Bauer

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For
me, being a writer means being a reader. On average, I read a book/day.
And it's hard, but not from the reading side. My challenge is finding
new books that I'm excited about.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Let's face it. Nothing's worse than a reading slump.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So, in the interests of sharing best practices, here are my favorite places to find new books that feed my brain...
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">One.
iBooks
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">iBooks is what I consider curated content. In other words, the
iBooks team work their butts off to find authors that are fresh,
original, and about to 'break through.' I can say this from experience
because they took a risk on promoting my books when I was a first-time
author. My trick is to go to the categories page and see who they have
featured in:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Romance

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Science Fiction and Fantasy

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Young Adult

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Finding good books is as much an art as it is a science; the iBooks team does a great job.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Two.
BookBub and Freebooksy
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There are a lot of book newsletters out there.
As I said before, I'm a fan of hand-curated content. Both BookBub and
Freebooksy are selective in who they accept. Their teams do a great job
of making sure that the featured books are interesting and cool. And
subscribing is free!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Three. Goodreads
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hands-down, this is my top
place to go. I have a short list of all-time favorite books where, every
so often, I go to Goodreads and check out their "Readers Also Enjoyed"
section. There's always something cool in there.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I also look at
the equivalent on Amazon, but that doesn't seem to work as well for me
for some reason. I suspect it's because the Amazon algorithm takes my
personal browsing/buying history into account, which is a mess. I look
into all sorts of books and genres as my 'publisher self' versus my
'reader self.' You don't want to know the strange things I get
recommended (hint: on occasion, it has included dinosaur porn!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Four. Goodreads Friends
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I also get TONS of great ideas from my friends on Goodreads. Plus, it's a lot of fun to see what people thought of the books that I've read, and vice versa. The bottom line? Goodreads is all-around awesomesauce.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So there you have it...my secret weapons in the war for finding new books to read. Hope you found some of them helpful!

**I'm a BIG fan of Goodreads so I love to see it in this list! Some great ideas from Christina!**

Review:

Slippers And Thieves is the fourth instalment in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series by Christina Bauer and is a fun and easy story that finally features Ella and Alec in their long awaited tale!

As a Cinderella template, Ella has put a lot of effort into changing her fate and that includes escaping her evil stepfamily and making a life for herself in Manhattan. She even attends West Lake Prep alongside her best friend Bry, an exclusive school where regular humans mix with fairies, shifters and witches. Although she must live a life in hiding, Elle has always been able to get her heart’s desire……until Alec. Alec Le Charme is the heir to a chain of high-end jewellers and someone who melts Elle’s heart with his charm and kindness. Despite her best intentions, Elle has fallen for Alec, something that is a big no-no thanks to her evil step-mother, who is determined arrange a marriage between Alec and her daughter Ivy. Staying friends with Alec is the best option, but when masquerade balls, mixed identities and secret kisses occur, Elle and Alec will need to decide just how far they’re willing to go to be together and if they can overcome not only all the obstacles in their way, but Elle’s fear of letting someone close as well.

I’ve been a fan of this series since the first instalment was released and even now I continue to be entertained by the tales Christina Bauer creates. Fairy Tales of the Magicorum is a fun and effortless series to read. The idea---that a number of supernatural beings exist (shifters, witches, fairies) and that there are people whose lives mimic the structure of a number of common fairytales (Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty etc) is really intriguing. I think it’s a different twist on a fairytale retelling. I mean, the characters know they are living fairytale templates; it was a part of everyday life---this idea is just really fun to me.

After three novels, we finally get to see the story of Elle and Alec! Readers will be familiar with Elle who is Bryar Rose’s best friend and Alec who is Knox’s. The chemistry between them has always been there so I have been [patiently] waiting for the day Christina Bauer finally told their tale and I don’t think she disappoints!

Slippers And Thieves unfolds through Elle and Alec’s varying, back and forth perspective. Part of the novel takes place prior to any of the other events of the series to help set the stage and give readers a better understanding of all that Elle has been through to get where she is. I actually quite liked this aspect, although I was surprised to see that Elle and Alec had actually met before I thought they had.

I really do love both Elle and Alec as characters and think they are both sweet but capable individuals. They had a great chemistry together and were adorable. I enjoyed the fact that even though they were somewhat influenced by their fairytale templates they didn’t let that dictate their decisions and actions. Their feelings were entirely their own.

Slippers And Thieves is full of colourful creatures and characters including mining dwarves, animated objects and talking animals. Romance, adventure and excitement mingle and I can’t wait to see what will happen with Elle and Alec next. Oh and I wouldn’t mind seeing Jacoby feature and brought to his knees by a woman….perhaps by Agatha!
Review:

Navigating the Stars is the first novel in Maria V. Snyder’s Sentinels of the Galaxy series and is a rich and surprising science fiction YA that draws readers in with its mystery, suspense and promising storyline.

Terracotta Warriors have been discovered on planets all across the Milky Way and Lyra Daniel’s parents are the foremost archaeological experts on them. This means Lyra has been dragged to various planets to study them all her life. Lyra is tired of always loosing friends and of the constant moves, even as her parents promise that the most recent find is the most exciting of them all. Stuck on a research base isn’t Lyra’s idea of fun, but when one of the many Warrior planets go silent and looters storm the base, Lyra quickly finds herself involved in discovering the Warriors true origin but with dangers coming from unexpected places and a blast from the past throwing her through a loop, Lyra will need all her skills to outsmart the bad guys before those she cares about are hurt.

Maria V. Snyder is an author I absolutely love. I’ve been a fan since Poison Study came out as a debut (yes that long) and have devoured her novels ever since, continuously getting lost in her tangible and alluring worlds. Navigating the Stars proved to be something different than her fantasy tales and Snyder doesn’t disappoint with this intergalactic and futuristic adventure.

I really enjoyed the concept of China’s infamous terracotta warriors being discovered throughout space, although at this point the implications and reasons behind their existence is yet to be explained. I have a feeling that Maria V. Snyder has a lot planned where their origin and purpose is concerned and given some of the events of this first instalment, I’m very keen to see what we uncover as the series progresses.

Navigating the Stars is told through the eyes of Lyra, a talented hacker (called worming in this series) and daughter of the two leading archaeologists on the terracotta warriors. Admittedly the novel does read younger than some of Snyder’s other books and I think this stems from the fact that protagonist Lyra is seventeen years old and still very young in a lot of ways; something that is highlighted in her occasionally childish voice and actions throughout the story. Lyra is rash and often unthinking however I do see a lot of area for potential growth in her and can only envision the kind of character she will become throughout the series.

Maria V. Snyder weaves elements of action and romance within her story while also focusing on the mystery and unknown surrounding the terracotta warriors. Her ideas behind space travel and time jumps was interesting if not somewhat confusing in the beginning. I felt the story got off to a somewhat slow start in the very beginning but steadily progressed with the turn of each page.

Building towards some surprising revelations that leave more questions to be answered, Navigating the Stars features likable characters and an intriguing storyline. Maria V. Snyder concludes this chapter of the series very well and has me excited to see what she has in store for her characters and her readers with the next novel---I can’t wait to read it!
Review:

Assassin’s Mask is the second novel in the Assassin’s Magic series by Everly Frost is a fantastic sequel and continuation in the saga that is full of danger, exhilarating romance and edge of your seat excitement.

When Hunter Cassidy revealed the truth of what she is to Slade Baines during a battle for their lives, everything she treasured was ripped away. Now with a broken heart, Hunter is left with only her mission to locate and destroy the weapon that led her to infiltrate the Assassin’s Legion to begin with. This is easier said than done and Hunter will have to make deals with fellow assassins if she wants to succeed; something that will put her straight back into Slade’s path. Now Master Assassin, Slade’s power grows day by day, as does his resolve to fight the bond he formed with Hunter---if only for her own good. Then a new enemy surfaces and Hunter and Slade have no choice but to work together if they want to survive. Will their fears keep them apart or will they discover that their greatest strength lies in each other?

I’m seriously in love with this series! After two novels I am very much besotted with the characters and story and am invested in their journey. Well written and paced, Assassin’s Mark continues to explore this rich world of assassins, magic and monsters that Everly Frost has created. With elements of mythology and plenty of solid fight sequences, battles and action, this series has plenty to offer and continues to develop. It’s enchanting and enthralling with a fantastic main character and a great cast of supporting characters whose dynamics I’m loving; Cain, Vlad, Tansy, William, Briar, Dean---they’re all fabulous!

Everly Frost writes our protagonist Hunter as someone so very likable that I’m hopelessly addicted to her story. Hunter is kind, genuine, honourable and so very kick-ass. She’s not perfect and she’s not infallible, but she tries her hardest to do the right thing and not hurt anyone in the process. Hunter is just a fantastic character that is perfect within the story and in her role.

Oh, and she certainly has a perfect match in Slade Baines who faces a lot of his own struggles in Assassin’s Mask. Everly Frost is a writer after my own heart with absolutely NO love triangle in sight with this series. Hunter and Slade are committed to one another only and regardless of the difficulties they are facing there is no denying their chemistry and feelings for one another.

As Assassin’s Mask ends with some shocks, and some losses, I cannot wait to see what happens to Hunter, Slade and all their friends next and will be diving straight into the next book to find out!
Review:

One Blood Ruby is the second novel in Melissa Marr’s Seven Black Diamonds series and is a deeply engrossing sequel that is filled with danger, adventure and romance.

After discovering her true Fae heritage, LilyWhite Abernathy has accepted her role as heir to the Hidden Lands and the combined Seelie and Unseelie thrones. After decades of raging war with the humans, the Queen of Blood and Rage is open to brokering peace with the human world and Lily knows her position in both worlds is the key to securing this. Alongside their fellow black diamonds, Lily and her new boyfriend Creed stand alongside Lily’s newly found fae family to create a new peaceful world but with recent violent attacks on humans leaning towards a fae involvement is the hope for peace over before it has even begun?

Having fallen in love with Seven Black Diamonds, I jumped into One Blood Ruby as soon as my copy arrived and was delighted to find all the aspects I loved about the first novel alive in its sequel. Picking up where the first novel left off, One Blood Ruby is a thrilling and exciting story full of romance, friendship and blossoming familial connections.

One Blood Ruby continues to follow Lily primarily but is also told through the varying perspectives of Creed, Eilidh, Zephyr, Will and Violet as well, offering readers a very well rounded and inclusive view of the happenings within the novel. I genuinely love all the characters and enjoy seeing them individually and as a group as they connect and fight for one another.

Melissa Marr is very inapt at creating darkly riveting and complex characters with different personalities, desires and drives. One Blood Ruby continues to feature characters like this who are all very different but complement one another immensely. Fae, fae-blood or human, Marr writes her characters fiery, passionate, capable and endlessly thrilling to follow. I like their wit, attitude and mannerisms across the board and feel like the cast of characters within this series is truly fabulous.

As the Hidden Lands and human worlds look to unite, we see a more maternal and almost human side to the Queen of Blood and Rage. Amongst the romance, friendship and action of the story, it was sweet to see Endellion motherly towards her newly found granddaughter Lily and even her grandson Zephyr. This made for a nice touch to the story and balanced nicely with other aspects that were at play.

One Blood Ruby was another fabulous novel from Melissa Marr filled with excitement, danger and even unexpected loss. Emotional and riveting, One Blood Ruby leaves me highly excited about seeing more of the characters and I will be keeping my fingers-crossed and my eyes peeled for another novel in the series as I would love to see what Melissa Marr does next!

Assassin’s Magic is the first novel in Everly Frost’s series of the same name and is a fast paced and deeply addictive urban fantasy full of magic, action, danger and romance!

Having seen her mother die, Hunter Cassidy plans to infiltrate the Assassin’s Legion in order to avenge her death and recover the relic her mother died trying to protect. Pretending to be an assassin-in-training, Hunter thought she was prepared for danger, but she certainly wasn’t prepared for Slade Baines, a fellow candidate and someone who treats Hunter with respect and kindness. In the male dominated Legion, Hunter is the first female to train with the Master Assassin and seen as weak by the other candidates. All except for Slade who quickly becomes an ally. As Hunter attempts to fulfil her secret mission, getting close to Slade can only be a mistake, yet he makes her lower her guard despite her best intentions. As the Master Assassin closes in on a weapon of immense power, getting her hands on it first is the only way Hunter can ensure he can’t use it but with her growing feelings for Slade weighing on her mind and clouding her vision, will Hunter be able to make difficult choices or will the Master Assassin find a way to destroy her first?

As the first novel by Everly Frost I have ever read, I have to say I was very impressed by Assassin’s Magic. Heading into the story I don’t think I was as prepared to like the characters and the story as much as I did, but I will say one thing…..I’m seriously hooked! Perfectly paced, Assassin’s Magic introduces readers to an intriguing world of magic and monsters where certain individuals train to become assassins and hunters of things that go bump in the night.

Assassin’s Magic unfolds through the perspective of Hunter Cassidy, a young woman with secrets. I genuinely loved Hunter and thought she was intelligent, capable and kick-ass. Her voice is distinct and easy to follow with author Everly Frost writing Hunter as someone you can’t help but like. I felt she was honourable and mission orientated even as it becomes clear that she has many secrets and isn’t what people think she is.

Everly Frost implores some really interesting mythology within her novel and I’m really keen to see more of her take on Keres and Valkyries. Greek myth is some of my favourite and I always enjoy seeing something a little different which I think Frost manages to succeed with in Assassin’s Magic. I appreciated the way Frost slowly revealed certain parts of Hunter’s past and heritage and allowed readers to come to their own conclusion about what is happening while also making sure you needed to know more.

There’s so much about Assassin’s Magic to love—the mythology, the action, the mystery and most definitely the romance. Hunter and Slade’s romance has that slow burn feeling that develops over time from the initial attraction to slithers of friendship with an undeniable chemistry. I really liked seeing Hunter let Slade in. Slade was sexy and capable while also being kind and respectful and he clearly cared about Hunter. They have plenty of obstacles in the way of their relationship, the biggest of which the truth about what Hunter is, but I for one am cheering for them and can’t wait to see them find their way to each other again.

Thrilling and very enjoyable, Assassin’s Magic felt like The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare meets Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder and is something I can’t wait to continue with. I’ll be starting the next novel straight away to see what Everly Frost has in store for Hunter next!
