 My Reviews:

From Death's Embrace......

Nash sighs.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Something is. Tell me.”
He gives me a weak smile. “I’d like to spend some time alone with you. There are always others about.”
Which means I can’t pay much attention to him. The thought warms my cheeks and has me wanting to move closer. “You have me alone now.”
His gaze sends a blaze of fire through me. “And I intend to make full use of it, like I should have been doing all along.”
He leans in closer. My heart flutters. We’re going to kiss.
I haven’t felt his lips against mine in too long a time.
His breath is warm against my lips. Sweet. He is focused on me, no hint of fear clouding his eyes. I have waited for this to happen since he came back to me. There may be greater hope than I thought.
I can almost feel his kiss when there’s a knock on the door.
We bolt apart, heaving for air.
Nash takes a moment to look me over before answering the door. A servant says, “Shillian and Carver Nilmac, Your Majesty.”
The announced two come in, gushing about the trip. I want to shove them both outside, slam the door, and get back to our kiss. Why did they have to come now?
Shillian says, “I’m so grateful you invited us to tour the countryside with you. I’ve spent most of my life in Indell. It will be wonderful to see other areas for a change.”
She continues spouting off, but I have a hard time focusing. I'm only aware of him—Nash. The warmth that so abruptly left. The almost-kiss between us. That’s what I want—his lips against mine.
And if anyone knew, Nash would be dead.

Janeal Falor lives in Utah where she’s finally managed to live in the same house for more than five years without moving. In her spare time she reads books like they’re nuts covered in caramel and chocolate, cooks whatever strikes her fancy, and enjoys the outdoors. From Into Aether.....

Theo’s knock echoed along the wall. A loud grating noise replied, and a small square window opened up. Theo stood on tiptoes to look through, but she stumbled back when a robotic head popped up on the other side. His glassy brown eyes blinked, and small shutters focused in on them. Gears turned in his neck as he inspected the newcomers.

“Welcome to Aetherland Isle, home of the ‘Stein Family Clockworks Factory.’”
“Oh, my, the robot talks,” Auntie Grace exclaimed.
The head pulled back and huffed. “I am a Cybertronic Humanoid Automation Division Two, not a robot.”
“A what?” Theo asked.
“A Cybertronic Humanoid Automation Division Two, you may call me CHAD-2. Who are you?”
“I’m Theo Parson, and this is my aunt, Grace Monahan. We’re here to find my mother, Marjorie Parson.”
“Do you have an appointment?”
“No, but—
“Admittance is by appointment only. Good day.” The small window slammed shut.
“Wait!”
Wind whipped across the platform; reminding Theo of her very long day. Her patience grew short. Theo banged on the wall again. The small window ground open, and CHAD-2 stared at them from inside.
“Welcome to the Stein Family Clockworks Factory. Do you have an appointment?”
“Yes, we do!” Theo dug through her bag and opened Victoria’s letter. She held it up in front of CHAD-2. “We were invited by Victoria Corvus-Stein.”
“Very well, leave your luggage and enter.”
The window closed, the wall groaned, and two massive doors swung inward. Theo and Auntie Grace stepped into another world, and the doors closed behind them. CHAD-2 was nothing but a torso, sitting inside a guard stand. He reminded Theo of the old Esmerelda Fortune Teller machine in the NUC student center. He held his arm out.
“Welcome to Aetherland Isle, home of the Stein Family Clockworks Factory. Enjoy your stay,” the last few words faded out as CHAD-2 wound down.
“CHAD-2? Hello? Are you in there?” Theo tapped on his head. He didn’t reply. “I think he’s asleep.”
Auntie Grace didn’t respond. Theo turned to her aunt, who stood in awe at the scene around them. They’d stepped into another realm – a different time. Gas lamps flickered along cobblestone streets. Lush topiaries and flowering cherry blossoms lined the walkways in front of Victorian shops. A spring-like afternoon replaced the harsh winter gusts of home. The only thing missing in the pristine vision were people. The streets were lifeless."

From Forbidden.......

“You can’t mean to fight her,” Wolfe said in his odd accent.
Bregovi motioned for the weapon.
Wolfe tossed him another rapier, which Bregovi caught by the handle with ease.
“I hope the hellcat takes you,” Wolfe said.
“Traitor,” Bregovi replied as he rested the thin blade on his shoulder. “May I propose jousting rules?”
“Which would be what exactly?” she asked.
“The first to pin the other with blade or strength wins the bout and their boon,” he said.
“I and my party get passage?”
“I get that kiss.”
“Fine.”
Kate positioned her body with open ground behind her to ensure he didn’t have the initial advantage of forcing her into brush or trees. And through a gap in the forest, she caught a glimpse of Florian’s castle gleaming in the distant sunshine, sprouting turrets like giant trees reaching for the heavens. Truly a stone’s throw away.
“Magnificent. I would ask you to clasp hands on it, but I doubt you’d oblige. I suppose I will have to rely on your honor. Can I trust in that?” he said with a wink.
Her honor? Infuriating man. She sprang forward, her blade meeting his with a quick tap. He blocked each strike as she forced him backward toward a cluster of trees.
“Impressive,” he said, then, in the space of a blink, spun to her right.
She turned to keep him in her sights, but the man was light of foot and had her twirling in circles before she knew what he’d been up to. After freezing her steps to halt the dizziness, she felt the firm smack of his blade on her bottom.
“Is this how you fight all your opponents?” she asked, trying to locate him again as he stepped behind her at each turn.
“Only the beautiful ones,” a warm voice said in her ear.
Spinning the moment he spoke, she latched onto his tunic with her free hand. As mischief danced in his eyes, a long-forgotten memory bubbled to the surface. A childhood game of blind man’s bluff with her father. He’d always been full of mirth and had teased her much the same way.
“Perhaps you’d be better employed as the court jester,” she said.
“You may be right. I’ll inquire about the position the next time I see the king.”
As if he’d ever met the king. Stepping back, she brought her weapon around once again. He blocked blow after blow as she forced him toward a huge elm.
“I will disarm you,” she uttered through gritted teeth.
“Dear lady, you disarmed me long ago.” He said it with such affection, such warmth, it caught her off-guard, and her blade lowered a fraction.
At that precise moment, he twisted his weapon with hers, swiftly whirled her around and pinned her against the tree. They were both out of breath, bodies pressed against one another, their rapiers pinned between them, the back of his fingers resting against her right breast.
Hoping he hadn’t noticed the intimate placement of his hand, she struggled to break free.
His hold was solid.
Her mind raced. If she could use her powers, she’d draw a knife in an instant, or pull down a tree, or command a rock to—
“You smell like lavender,” he whispered, his eyes inches from hers.
“You smell like—” She took a whiff, expecting something repugnant. Instead, spices and mint filled her senses. She could almost taste cinnamon, and her mouth started to water.
“I smell like what?” he asked, his eyes teasing.
Kate was not about to tell him he smelled delicious. “I didn’t know bandits bathed.”
“We are not all as you would expect.” He winked and devilish dimples popped on both stubbled cheeks. “I believe I have won the point, fair lady. Do you concede?”
The idea of kissing him was becoming far less disagreeable, but she refused to give in. She struggled again to no avail.
Easing up, she said, “It appears I underestimated you.”
He smiled.
She smiled back.
He relaxed his grip. Exactly what she had counted on. Mustering up her strength and a knee, she shoved him off. As he struggled to regain his balance, she rushed forward, caught his blade with hers and executed a move to free it from his grasp.
In expert fashion, he recovered and countered with a twist of metal and will. Her weapon flew through the air, leaving her without blade, breath or speech.
Kate looked around at the men, the sword, Bregovi.
“Considering another play, fair one?” he asked.
“You agreed. Safe passage.” She could not be considering this.
He bowed in acknowledgment and threw the borrowed blade back to Wolfe.
“The bargain stands.”
“Yes, well, we’ve already discussed my view of your bargain.”
“A misguided view, indeed,” he said, his voice dropping to a whisper. “For I promise to do all in my power to ensure you are satisfied with the exchange.”
Satisfied. The word hung in the air. Taunting her. She wondered just what ensuring her satisfaction would entail and grew dizzy—either from fear or excitement, possibly both.
Whichever the case, she had little choice and once again uttered, “Very well, collect your kiss.”
He smiled lazily, started forward and halted. Reaching down, he slid a dagger from his boot and tossed it away. The men laughed and she couldn’t help but join in.
“At least you learn from your mistakes,” she said.
“Always.” He stepped closer.
Her knees wobbled.
He moved nearer still.
Kate drew in a breath and something fluttered in her stomach.
Guards and bandits cheered.
Bregovi smiled at their audience, then turned full attention back to her, a grin playing at his lips.
His eyes were full of magik and spells and mystery. Emerald pools flecked with gold. He held her gaze. Intimate. Intense. Hovering just a step away.
Waiting, while his lips and eyes beckoned.
Waiting, while a hint of spice teased her nose.
Just waiting until the suspense mounted to an unbearable degree. Unable to withstand the infernal tension another moment, she rushed forward to get the blasted kiss over with.
Unfortunately, she misjudged the distance.
Her lips crashed into his with such force she knocked him backward. But instead of toppling over—as she would have done under a similar attack—he grabbed her arms and softened his mouth over hers.

Spotlight: Thirst: Blood of my Blood by R.P. Channing- Guest Post

Hello lovelies!

I'm happy to feature debut author R.P. Channing and his novel Thirst: Blood of my Blood the blog today with a guest post. This book sounds quite interesting and I urge you all to check it out!

WITH BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS

~ Kira Sutherland ~

After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her 'boyfriend'), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated...), and being labeled as having 'issues' in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:

1. Continue her 'therapy' (where she's told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often...)

Or

2. Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for "Crazies and Convicts" (as the social media sites call them.)

She chooses the latter...

~ Cory Rand ~

Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother's best friend...sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.

Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual - he has a weakness) he's left with two choices:

1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks...)

Or

2. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he'll get an education.

He chooses the latter...

It's at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.

Things he's always ignored.

Until now.

WHY YA?

Young Adult is the one genre where a writer is pretty much free to do anything he likes.

Too many people look at the “Young” part of Young Adult and miss completely the “Adult” part.
Young Adult and MG are galaxies apart in content. Young Adult is the one genre read far and wide by almost all age groups.

We were all seventeen once (some of us still so), and Young Adult appeals to a market that knows what it’s like to be seventeen. That’s pretty much everyone who reads.

The stories deal with issues that we, as a adults, face every day. And it deals with them tastefully.
Young Adult stays firmly within boundaries that I feel comfortable with as a writer, without reducing anything in the quality of the story.

Some of the scariest scenes I ever read were in The Hunger Games. I had chills. And yet, when I move into Horror itself as a genre, I find all the gore to be in bad taste. I lose interest, and I’m even a little repulsed sometimes.

Young Adult focuses on the story without getting into excessive details that we don’t really need in order to tell that story. The romance in YA is endearing, gentle, sweet, kind, loving. Who didn’t think Twilight was one of the most romantic books ever written?

A Young Adult author has free rein in many genres. He is not stuck too firmly into a classification such as “Fantasy” or “Romance” or “Horror” because YA can encompass all those genres and still remains “Young Adult.” There are people who liked Twilight and yet didn’t like The Host. They are both “Young Adult” but they are also in different sub-genres.

I’m working on two stories right now, both in completely different genres, but both “Young Adult.” I’d hate to stay firmly within “Fantasy” or “Romance” or “Horror.” With YA, I can move around, I can act freely, I can write what I feel like writing, and write about characters that I look up to and that I’d like to be like.

The age of YA characters is a magical age. Nobody likes moping character. Teenage characters don’t mope. They have spunk, verve, sass.

In other words, they have all the qualities we find good in people.

And what is a story without good characters?

What a fab guest post! Really makes you think about the different YA sub-genre's. And for the record, I LOVED The Host! And I consider it Stephanie Meyer's masterpiece :)

R P Channing started writing three years ago, but never published anything even after churning out over a million words of fiction. Thirst: Blood of my Blood is the first book he dared to publish. When asked why, he said, “Because it’s the first thing I wrote that my wife actually enjoyed reading.” When not hammering away (most literally) at his keyboard, he can be found buried in a book, reading anything from romance to horror to young adult to non-fiction to comedy.

Spotlight: Crimson Earth by Anna Soliveres- Excerpt

In 2014 I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Anna Soliveres debut novel Violet Storm, and now I'm super excited about the release of it's sequel, Crimson Earth. Violet Storm was a great read and I have high hopes of Crimson Earth!
___________________________

Aeva Storm finally has the answers she’s been looking for since the night she was struck by lightning. She knows who she is—and more importantly, what she is. But her secret isn’t hers alone to keep, and some of those who know the truth will do anything to control her.

In the sequel to the acclaimed Violet Storm, Aeva must decide how far she’ll go to protect her identity and to find her missing sister in a world she hardly recognizes. She must embrace her new life—and her strange new body—if she hopes to save the only place she and her family have left to call home.

Filled with action, mystery, and heartbreak, Crimson Earth finds Aeva, Ruven, and Karth on opposing sides as the war between The False Alliance and the Monarchy draws near.

Can they band together to fight against the evil threatening the City? Or will they destroy each other before the war has even begun?

Add on Goodreads or check out my review of book one, Violet Storm!

From Crimson Earth.....

Ruven’s lips twitch into the distant echo of a smile—a rare sight these days. He moves to the other side of the wide corridor. He’s hard to ignore. As a whole, Ruven is jarringly present in the space he occupies. Mostly because of his unique modifications, making him incomparable to any other human on this earth. And when those crimson eyes lock onto you… it’s like being ensnared in a dream you’re not sure will turn into a nightmare.
Since I woke up from my near-death experience, there never seems to be enough distance between us, and yet, for some reason he’s always around. Some people are gluttons for punishment.
Don’t pretend you don’t care about him, Aeva.
How the heckfire am I supposed to do anything else? These days, my entire life revolves around pretending. Before the Monarch died, Ruven had been my friend—my closest ally. And then things got a little too intense. He told me how much he cared about me, and that he wanted more than just friendship. But I struggled with the idea of us, because there were more pressing issues occupying my mind—and my heart. I couldn’t give him what he wanted and now things have changed between us.
I hate it.
I hate it for so many reasons that just thinking about it makes me want to hurt someone.
There is no changing the past. No changing how I feel.

Anna Soliveres has always been a storyteller but it wasn't until her early twenties when she began writing novel length works. The result was an enthusiasm to get better at the craft until her work could be shared with the world. As with all writer's, she is an avid reader. You'll likely find Anna lost behind a novel or nonfiction work. If she's not reading, she's probably binge-watching a series on Netflix or Amazon, in search of inspiration, taking her imagination beyond words and into the realm of visual storytelling. She grew up (or rather, remained forever ensnared) in the world of anime, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Harry Potter, and all things with "Super" or "Hero" in the title. Her debut novel, VIOLET STORM released March 2014.

ANNABETH NEVERENDING AND
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN HAIR AND MAKEUP

By Leyla Kader Dahm

In my book, Annabeth Neverending, Annabeth Prescott discovers that she’s a reincarnated ancient Egyptian princess. Annabeth takes makeup, its ease of application, and the antiseptic nature of its ingredients for granted before her epiphany. But she soon learns that in ancient Egypt, looking presentable to the opposite sex (as well as the gods) was a dicey proposition. Back then, you couldn’t just pop into the corner drugstore and pick up some Cover Girl. Beautification was much more complicated.

In ancient Egypt, both men and women wore makeup. But it wasn’t just for superficial purposes, even though it looked amazing. That distinctive winged black eyeliner helped ancient Egyptians deflect sunlight in the same way that football players wear black grease paint under their eyes to keep from being blinded while on the field. Eye shadow had medicinal purposes, and helped prevent/cure eye inflammations and ingrown eyelashes (gross). Blush, infused with honey and salt, helped to both disguise and heal sunburns.

Makeup also assisted in shielding the body from the elements. The air was exceedingly hot, and rubbing oil and other lubricant ointments into the skin provided a literal layer of protection. Who knew that ancient Egyptian makeup wasn’t just beautiful, but practical? It was serious business, and makeup application was a specialized skill. There weren’t YouTube tutorials to help you achieve just the right eyeliner swoop. The rich would routinely hire makeup artists—actually, that’s one thing that has carried over!

Makeup was made of everything from black kohl and green malachite for the eyes to crushed beetles for the cheeks and lips. These powders were mixed with water and applied in paste form. Goose fat was a necessary binder to help the makeup stick to the skin. And that must’ve smelled delightful when sitting out in the desert sun. Let’s not even get into the alligator dung mascara. And of course, makeup could be removed with moisturizing creams made of whipped ostrich eggs and bile. The MAC counter is sounding especially good right now.

Hair was also a major consideration. Depending on the era, clean-shaven heads were all the rage, while at other points longer hair was preferred for men and women alike. For special occasions, the rich wore waxed and perfumed wigs made of natural human hair, while the poor had to resort to vegetable fiber extensions as a substitute. Gray hair was dealt with by using henna dye, though the more desperate tried casting spells on their heads with the aid of ox blood and putrid monkey liver to make the gray flee (I should try this, it sounds cheaper than a salon).

Sadly, the pressure to look good didn’t stop when you died. The dead had to look their best when being presented to the gods in the afterlife. Makeup containers, palettes and wigs have been found in tombs so the deceased ancient Egyptians could achieve that relentless aim. The power of a good makeover has always seemed magical to me, but the ancient Egyptians took it to new heights! If Annabeth Prescott were real, I imagine she’d be just as relieved as I am that we live in the present day. It’s a much better time if you’re a low-maintenance kind of girl.

Eeep! It'd take something fierce to ever get me to put blood and monkey liver in my hair. I'm seriously thinking we have it good in modern times! Don't you agree?

American Leyla Kader Dahm popped popcorn and dreamt of a career in show business while working in a movie theater during high school. The small-town Midwestern girl opted for the practical route and studied communications at Carroll College and Cornell University. But her life changed course dramatically when a temp agency placed her in a production and development gig at Miramax/Dimension Films.

Dahm went on to work as a script consultant for numerous production companies. She appeared in the acclaimed spoken word show Sit ‘N Spin and had her comedy feature spec, Due North, optioned by Michael Levy Enterprises. She sold her pitch, Survival Instinct, to Nickelodeon Original Movies.

Dahm lives with her husband and children in Los Angeles, where she focuses on writing quality material for families and young adults.

From Her Majesty's Necromancer.....

The door was unlocked so I entered. I was familiar with the layout of Lincoln's rooms, having been held prisoner in them for a few days. I set the jug beside the empty bowl on the washstand in his bedroom. I should cover it with a lid to keep the water as warm as possible. A book wouldn't do—the steam would damage the cover.

I looked over the surface of his desk for something to use, but could only find papers and writing materials. The top drawer contained a blotter, spare ink and quills, but the second drawer was more promising. Beneath some papers was a slate of the kind children used in school. It was just the right size to cover the jug. My fingers touched a thin chain at the back from which the slate could be hung. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to hang a slab of slate on the wall, but I flipped it over to make sure it wasn't something that could be damaged by steam.

It wasn't a chain for hanging the slate, but a necklace that had been nailed to either side of the wooden frame. A flat, oval pendant dangled from the center. Something had been carved into the pendant and I held the candle closer to see. It was a blue eye, rather crudely rendered.

How curious. Why was it nailed to the back of the slate? Had Lincoln done it or someone else?

The soft click of the door made my heart leap into my throat. I dropped the slate back into the drawer and shut it with my hip, but it was too late. Lincoln stood in the doorway. He held no light and I couldn't see anything more than his silhouette, but I felt the force of his glare nevertheless.

"What are you doing in here?" he growled. "I haven't given you permission to enter."

C.J. Archer has loved history and books for as long as she can remember and feels fortunate that she found a way to combine the two with her writing. Under her other name of Carolyn Scott, she has published contemporary short stories in women’s magazines, and she also writes romantic mystery novels under this name.

She has at various times worked as a librarian, IT support person and technical writer but in her heart has always been a fiction writer. She has won and placed in romance writing contests including winning RWAustralia’s Emerald Award in 2008 for the manuscript that went on to be released under the title HONOR BOUND. C.J. spent her early childhood in the dramatic beauty of outback Queensland, Australia, but now lives in suburban Melbourne with her husband and two children.
