Waiting on Wednesday #204

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Eden Conquered by Joelle Charbonneau
Releases on: June 12th 2018

The second and final installation in the Dividing Eden series, a Cain and Abel meets The Selection fantasy about two royal siblings forced to compete for the crown

In the electrifying final installment in the Dividing Eden duology, royal siblings Carys and Andreus, betrayed by everyone they believed to be allies, continue to fight to determine who will reign over the kingdom—but now, one sibling has changed the game.

Thought:
I recently read the first book in this duology, Dividing Eden and after getting off to a slow start, I came to very much enjoy this fantasy tale which for me was a blend of Game of Thrones meets Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. I'm solidly on Team Carys and am looking forward to seeing what Joelle Charbonneau does next and how she plans to end the series.

Book Shelf: Spellslinger (Spellslinger #1) by Sebastien de Castell

There are three things that earn you a man’s name among the Jan’Tep. The first is to demonstrate the strength to defend your family. The second is to prove you can perform the high magic that defines our people. The third is simply to reach the age of sixteen. I was a few weeks shy of my birthday when I learned that I wouldn’t be doing any of those things.

Magic is a con game.

Kellen is moments away from facing his first mage's duel and the start of four trials that will make him a spellcaster. There's just one problem: his magic is gone. As his sixteenth birthday approaches, Kellen falls back on his cunning in a bid to avoid total disgrace. But when a daring stranger arrives in town, she challenges Kellen to take a different path. Ferius Parfax is one of the mysterious Argosi - a traveller who lives by her wits and the three decks of cards she carries. She's difficult and unpredictable, but she may be Kellen's only hope...

Review:

Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell is a rich and magic infused tale that is perfect for fans of Rick Riordan and those who love their YA reads full of excitement, humour and character chemistry.

For the Jan’Tep people, a person’s value can be defined by two things; the strength of his family and the strength of his magic. Fifteen year old Kellan belongs to one of the most powerful family of mages. Too bad that Kellen himself struggles with even the simplest of spells and doesn’t seem to be very magically inclined. As he participates in the trials every young mage must complete before they turn sixteen, Kellen fears the day is coming when he will be deemed incapable of performing magic and be forced to take a position of servitude as those without magic are expected to. Then a strange woman saves Kellen’s life during a duel gone wrong and offers him for the first time a different way of life where he can rely on his wits and cleverness instead of magic. Facing the opportunity to forge a different path than the one chosen for him, Kellen must choose between the life he’s always known and the one now before him. When a dangerous new enemy emerges determined to destroy the Jan’Tep, will Kellen stand by his people, or venture out on his own?

Heading into Spellslinger I wasn’t completely sure what to expect. The description doesn’t give too much away, but as I quickly discovered, Spellslinger is a highly addictive story. Sebastien de Castell weaves together a magical world that features a society that has an almost archaic aura to it with intriguing elements and ideology. Spellslinger reads really well. The writing is sharp and precise and the storyline builds in excitement as de Castell details Kellen’s journey.

Main character Kellen’s voice is easy to follow and he comes across as a genuine kid who is just trying to do the right thing and find his place in the world. Sebastien de Castell includes a lot of intelligent and humourful dialogue between the characters, especially Ferius Parfax and Reichris who were absolutely brilliant. I mean, three words; talking squirrel cat! Mind you, Reichris is more what I imagine a flying fox would be in this fictional world, but boy does he have a lot of personality and spunk—a fantastic personality!

Reminiscent of novels by Rick Riordan (who I consider one of my favourite authors!) the style of writing Sebastien de Castell implores and the storyline of Spellslinger is really enjoyable. There’s so much I want to know about the world and Kellen himself and I am expecting big things as this series progresses. Can’t wait to begin the next one!

Review:

The November Girl by Lydia Kang is a compelling and haunting supernatural tale that is beautifully told and envisioned. Featuring a unique and compelling heroine and a powerful story, The November Girl is like nothing I have read before.

Anda is a daughter of the Lake, torn between her human side and the powerful, controllable urges she has to be the November storms; sinking ships and revelling in the death that empowers her. Every November Anda embraces more of her nature, slowly loosing comprehension of what it is to be human and to feel, until one day a sad and lonesome boy comes to the island where she lives and awakens thoughts and feelings in her she thought long gone. Seventeen year old Hector is on the run from his abusive uncle, hoping to hide out on Isle Royale for the winter until he turns eighteen and can legally live by himself. All he has to do is survive a few months alone; only he soon realises that he is not as alone on the island as he expected to be. Hector is no stranger to violence, something that runs through Ana’s veins, but as the strange but beguiling girl and the sad boy with secrets spend time together, is the connection they share enough to keep Anda on dry land? Or will the call of the Lake be too strong?

The November Girl is a truly unique and unexpected novel. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this before, largely in part because Anda is such a different and incomparable character. Beautifully told, The November Girl unfolds through Hector and Anda’s varying POV’s with Anda’s voice extremely eerie and compelling—a highlight of the book in my eyes.

Anda is an odd mix of ferociousness and childlike wonder and innocence. Her haunted voice portrays a strange kind of hopelessness and incomprehension as she wars with her brutal and often uncontrollable nature. Though half human as well, her inability to care for her human side or even understand what is was she needed came across as oddly endearing and the sweet. It was adorable watching her try to offer small gestures to Hector while not fully comprehending or understanding the why of things. And yet she was also vastly intelligent and capable. It was a strange mix but deeply intriguing.

Author Lydia Kang has created a bewitching and dangerous island home for Anda. The harsh and vast nature of the storms that raged and Anda's connection to them was highly alluring. The icy, winter wilderness Anda and Hector fought to survive in was ferocious and I was entranced by the danger and wonder I found in equal measure in Kang's words.

Anda was magic and power brought to life while Hector was escaping from true, brutal pain that should be incomprehensible, but seems to be more common in today's society than I wish it was. The blend of the magic and realism was perfect and the harmony of the story flowed wonderfully. It was just a truly captivating story from beginning to end.

Lydia Kang has created something different but strangely beautiful within The November Girl. Haunting, powerful and moving, this story will draw from it's reader every emotion and leave them with a deeply satisfying feeling of hopefulness.

Waiting on Wednesday #203

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart
Releases on: July 24th 2018

In a world where women have no rights, sisters Serina and Nomi Tessaro face two very different fates: one in the palace, the other in prison.

Serina has been groomed her whole life to become a Grace–someone to stand by the heir to the throne as a shining, subjugated example of the perfect woman. But when her headstrong and rebellious younger sister, Nomi, catches the heir’s eye, it’s Serina who takes the fall for the dangerous secret that Nomi has been hiding.

Now trapped in a life she never wanted, Nomi has only one way to save Serina: surrender to her role as a Grace until she can use her position to release her sister. This is easier said than done. A traitor walks the halls of the palace, and deception lurks in every corner. But Serina is running out of time, imprisoned on an island where she must fight to the death to survive and one wrong move could cost her everything.

Thoughts:
I've previously read and adored Tracy Banghart's Rebel Wing series, so I was stoked to discover she had a new novel coming out. I really like the sound of Grace and Fury and will defintely be keeping an eye out for this one. I'm sure it'll be brilliant!

What do you think of Grace and Fury?
Is it something you would read?

Book Shelf: Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James

"A thrilling Orwellian vision of Britain, with a rebellious Hunger Games heart, Tarnished City is the second title in Vic James's electrifying Dark Gifts Trilogy, following Gilded Cage.

A corrupted city
A dark dream of power

Luke is a prisoner, condemned for a murder he didn’t commit. Abi is a fugitive, desperate to free him before magic breaks his mind. But as the Jardines tighten their grip on a turbulent Britain, brother and sister face a fight greater than their own.

New alliances and old feuds will remake the nation, leaving Abi and Luke questioning everything – and everyone – they know. And as Silyen Jardine hungers for the forgotten Skill of the legendary Wonder King, the country’s darkest hour approaches. Freedom and knowledge both come at a cost. So who will pay the price?"

Review:

Tarnished City is the second novel in the Dark Gifts series by Vic James and is another darkly thrilling tale featuring a world of inequity, injustice and powerful individuals that is full of political intrigue, betrayal and a rebellion that burns stronger with the turn of every page.

In a corrupt and alternate Britain, those in possession of special abilities known as Skill are held in high esteem and lord over their unSkillfull counterparts. As commoners struggle in their day to day lives and are expected to participate in ten years’ worth of slave days, those with Skill live in wealth and opulence, high above those they deem less. Ever since beginning their slave days, things have gone from bad to worse for siblings Abi and Luke. Luke has been condemned and imprisoned in an inescapable castle for his role in an Equal controlled assassination and Abi is a fugitive as she attempts to prove her brother is nothing but a pawn in the plans of others. Torn between who they can trust and who isn’t as they appear, Abi and Luke find themselves caught up in a dangerous rebellion and the desires of entitled lords who will do anything to secure their positions of power. Even if it means killing in order to do so…..

After getting off to a slow start with Gilded Cage, I have come to enjoy the turn of the 20th century aristocratic vibe that runs through this series and that Vic James explores with each instalment. Blending danger and powerful abilities with historic monuments, estates and mannerisms give the series a noble aura and James weaves brutal moments and shocking atrocities into the storyline to keep things forward moving and her readers on their toes.

Told in the third person, Tarnished City follows a number of characters who as a collective bring a lot to the story. There’s such a diverse collection of personalities within the series that it offers a lot of different perspectives and points of views that you can follow. Some are fairly obvious such as Abi’s and Luke’s, but characters such as Silyen Jardine really pique my interest as I try to understand the workings of their minds and what their reasoning’s for many of their actions are. I know Silyen’s working an angle, but I just don’t know what yet; is he friend or foe? It’s really not clear, and this and other characters motivations make for some interesting reading and story development.

Admittedly some characters I like more than others including Coira whose history and heritage I’m keen to learn more about and Garver who is strangely one of my favourite characters and who I’m hoping to see big things from after the ending of book two. I’m hoping this means some changes and developments are in store for him.

Author Vic James keeps a lot close to her chest and includes some unexpected betrayals and revelations in Tarnished City. As far as I’m concerned, Tarnished City was better than the first novel in my eyes and am hopeful that streak will continue.

With the thrilling final chapters of Tarnished City shocking and more than one character losing their life throughout the course of Tarnished City, I can’t wait to see what happens next in the third instalment and am sure James will once more keep me on my toes!

Owl Post #197

Inspired by The Story Siren's In My Mailbox, Owl Post allows us bloggers to showcase the books we've bought, won or received throughout the week and is hosted by Brodie over at Eleusinian Mysteries. We all know that the Owl Post is the fastest way to send and receive mail and they certainly make me happy every time they drop a book off.

Hello lovelies and welcome to another Owl Post!

Not only am I a bit of a book hoarder and own sooooo many books I don't know how I'll ever read all of them, but I can't resist a sale; which is why this week I have a lot of books I bought to share with you. The first photo is of books I scored from Kinokuniya and cost me less than $35--and that includes two hardbacks AND free shipping :)

I Bought:
 - The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
I enjoy Richelle Mead's books but have only just gotten a copy of this. Can't wait to read it!

- Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
I still have the first book in this series, Illuminae to read too but I LOVE Amie Kaufman and am sure I will adore it when I finally get around to it; just have to find the time.

- The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness
I recently heard this series was being made into a tv series and I've heard great things about it so I decided to give it ago. Unfortunately Kinokuniya cancelled my order of Book 1 & 2 because they ran out of stock so I now only have this third book, but I'll get the first two eventually.

- Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
I ADORE Laini Taylor and I'm stoked to have waiting to get a copy of this book--this hard back cost me $9. Nine freaking dollars--yes please!

- Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Caraval seems to be one of the hottest debuts this year and I'm looking forward to reading it. LOVE this hardback copy I scored for only $8 :) It's so beautiful!

- City of Light by Keri Arthur
A few weeks ago I found a second hand copy of the second book in this series for $2 in perfect condition, so now I have book one so I can began this series :)

- Ash and Quill by Rachel Caine
I LOVED the first two books in The Great Library series and thought I might have received a copy of Ash and Quill for review. Obviously I didn,t so I had to get one for myself! Can't wait to read this!

- The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson
I read the first book in this Shades of London series a few years ago and enjoyed it. I haven't continued on with the series but this book was $4 so I thought I'd finally get myself a copy of the sequel.

- Stormbringers by Philippa Gregory
Stormbringers is the second novel in the Order of Darkness series. I don't have a copy of book one, however this hardback was only $3.50, sooooooo ;)

My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster
-   Forged by Desire by Bec McMaster
These are books three and four in the London Steampunk (I also own book one) and Bec is attending an author event next year that I'm thinking of attending. I'm still unsure if I definitely will or not, but just in case, these were on sale ($6 each) so I decided to get copies in preparation; just in case!

And that's me this week! I treated myself to plenty of goodies!
What did the owls drop off for you?

Book Shelf: Size Matters (A Perfect Fit #1) by Alison Bliss

The rules of (fake) engagement . . .
Leah Martin has spent her life trying to avoid temptation. But she's sick of low-fat snacks, counting calories, and her hyper-critical mom. Fortunately, her popular new bakery keeps her good and distracted. But there aren't enough éclairs in the world to distract Leah from the hotness that is Sam Cooper - or the fact that he just told her mother that they're engaged . . . which is a big, fat lie.

Sam sometime speaks before he thinks. So what started out as defending Leah's date-ability to her judgmental mother soon turned into having a fiancee! Now the plan is to keep up the fake engagement, stay "just friends," and make Leah's family loathe him enough to just call the whole thing off . But Sam has an insatiable sweet tooth, not only for Leah's decadent desserts but her decadent curves. Her full lips. Her bright green eyes. Yep, things aren't going quite according to plan. Now Sam has to convince Leah that he's for real . . . before their little lie turns into one big, sweet disaster.

Review:

Size Matters is the first novel in Alison Bliss’s A Perfect Fit series and is a fresh and flirty contemporary romance perfect for those who love their romance novels threaded with humour and fun.

Curvaceous beauty Leah Martin is the owner of a successful bakery and no stranger to temptation. She’s spent her life fighting the treats and deserts she’s so good at creating, and consuming, as well as the expectations of those in her life who are not happy about her weight. Enter contractor Sam, a man whose hotness gets Leah’s blood pumping….and someone who just told her mother that they’re engaged, which is absolutely not true. Sam Cooper doesn’t always think before he speaks, which is probably why he came to Leah’s defence against her nit-picking mother and announced they were engaged; a fact that definitely isn’t true seeing as they only just met. Sure, Sam can’t help but be drawn in by Leah’s delectable curves and delicious desserts, but posing as her fake fiancé was never the plan. Now he and Leah need to do find a way to get out of their fake engagement with both their reputations intact, but when their plan to convince Leah’s family that Sam is a terrible guy and can't possibly the right man for their daughter begins to backfire, will Leah and Sam realise that they may just have something together after all? Or will both be left unsatisfied?

As someone who has never been stick thin in her life, Size Matters appealed to me straight away for its curvaceous heroine and important themes. Tackling weight issues is never an easy gig, but I liked the way in which Alison Bliss explored it while still managing to keep things fun and sweet. Size Matters may be my first novel by Alison Bliss, but it definitely won’t be the last as I was won over by the fun and entertaining storyline within this easy to follow and enjoy novel.

Unfolding through both Leah and Sam’s varying POV’s, Size Matters introduced two characters who were both likable and a romance that was really sweet. Sam was a funny but sexy male lead and I understood Leah’s insecurities on a deeper level. I could understand where she was coming from having experienced similar fears and uncertainties in the past myself. Emphasizing with the heroine like this only made me cheer for her more as she finally stood up for herself and got her man.

Overall, Size Matters was a light (no pun intended!) but all-round fun novel to read. It was something you could sit back and relax with and not take too serious, while also being full of humour, sensuality and romance. I look forward to reading the next one!

Review:

Seducing the Defendant is the second instalment in Chantal Fernando’s Conflict of Interest series and is another passionate, romantic and chemistry filled story that will sweep you up into a stellar romance with a heart-wrenching ending!

Jaxon Bently is a partner in a prestigious law firm and one of the most sought after criminal attorneys in the country. Known for his abilities to win every case, Jaxton is considered the best of the best, which is why he finds himself approached by Scarlett Reyes, a woman accused of killing her police officer husband. All the evidence points towards Scarlett’s guilt, but when Jaxon meets his beautiful client, he can’t help but believe her innocence. Scarlett Reyes can’t believe her estranged husband is still tormenting her, even from beyond the grave. Having finally escaped his grasp, she thought her future was looking up, only to now be accused of his murder. Hardened lawyer Jaxon may be her own hope, but with the evidence not in her favour and her husband’s colleagues determined to see her convicted of his death, will Jaxon and Scarlett be able to uncover the truth about his murder? Or will an innocent woman go to prison for a crime she didn’t commit?

Chantal Fernando is back with another deeply sensual and engaging novel in her attorney series with Seducing the Defendant. Taking readers once again into her Wind Dragons MC spin-off world, Fernando features two likable  and easy to follow characters in Jaxton and Scarlett. We had previously met Jaxton in book one, Breaching the Contract, so it was nice to see him front and centre this time around.

Personally, I’m very much a fan of all the characters in this series. Scarlett and Jaxton were both easily likable and down to earth individuals who had a sexy and often sweet relationship with each other. I liked how Chantal Fernando developed their story and gave them a great relationship; they just complimented each other so nicely—they were effortless.

Plus, I adore all the minor characters who I’m looking forward to following down the track. Hunter, Callum, Riley, even Gwen all intrigue me and I’m hoping to see them feature in their own stories. Even the receptionist Yvonne is someone I’d love to see more of. Demon stole my heart in Seducing the Defendant too and will have it for a long time, even though Fernando chose to write the story the way she did.

Addictive and easy reading, Seducing the Defendant is a novel I just devoured. Emotional and heartbreaking too, I can’t wait to read the third novel as soon as it comes out. Chantal Fernando never fails to hook me from beginning to end—bring on book three!
