Book Shelf: If I Die (Soul Screamers #5) by Rachel Vincent

The entire school's talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee's no ordinary high-school junior. She's a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it's a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee's going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend's needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren't quite human, either.

But Kaylee's borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

Review: (Warning, contains some spoilers)

Yaheeeee! Best....book....in.....the.....series.....ever! If I Die is the 5th book in the riveting Soul Screamers series and is the one that every Tod fan has been waiting for! This is the one that we’ve all prayed, hoped and counted the days until, lost in the series and just hoping for this moment. Honestly, it was so good I spent the majority of the book practically dancing on my bedroom ceiling. And after all the time we’ve waited for Kaylee and Tod to be together, the two of them didn’t disappoint!

I’m a die hard Tod fan, but him aside (if that’s even possible, lol) I still believe that this was still easily the best in the series so far.
In this book Kaylee is newly back with Nash and soon learns that her mother’s borrowed time is almost up. She’s about to die and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. There was constant excitement and emotions galore as Kaylee and those she loved struggled to deal with her upcoming demise. There’s new problems in the form of a maths teacher who’s not who he appears and heartbreak galore as truths are revealed and feelings announced. This was a real tearjerker, especially towards the end (no spoilers here ;D) with so many moments that drew pain and anguish from the characters. But there’s plenty of happiness, passion and love here too, with tough choices and even tougher dangers that all leads to an ending that you don’t see coming, yet leaves incredible possibilities for the characters.

Kaylee is back in all her glory. She’s still the same character she’s always been and the threat of death hasn’t infringed on her desire to save the world, one threat and problem at a time. She’s been on a constant roller coaster ride since becoming a bean sidhe and life is about to slap her in the face when she learns that her life is about to come to an end. I felt like she acted very noble in this book, her mistakes where Nash were concerned aside and she dealt with everything well even though she knew her time was running out. Who can blame a girl for acting how she did in the situation she was in? She knew she was going to die and she was scared, but she didn’t give up or let it rule her and you gotta love a girl like that!

And Kaylee is finally with Tod! Woohoo!! I admit that things between these two seemed a tad fast in the beginning, but I understand that was because Kaylee’s time was running out and she wanted to be with Tod while she could. I also must say I wasn’t bothered by this all too much. I was just surfing the high that came with them together and I couldn’t have cared less about how it came about, only that it did.
Tod is one of my all time fave male characters (has been since he first appeared in the series) and I loved seeing him finally get the girl. He’s loved her so deeply and wanted her desperately for so long. Everyone saw it, us readers and the other characters in the story and it was soooooo great to finally have Kaylee see it too. To finally have her see Tod and know that what they have is more than friendship. And boy, were they good together! I liked Nash and Kaylee I did, but her and Tod have something more. They’re so passionate about one another and she feels for him in a way she didn’t Nash. She loved Nash and she wanted him, but there were insecurities within her when she was with Nash. Tod knows her, totally, completely and her him and they’re so comfortable with each other. She feels for him and it’s real because she trusts him and is just herself with him. There’s no fear in her when she’s with Tod. They’re just right.

It’s horrible how her relationship with Nash ended in tatters, but you can’t deny we all saw it coming. Their problems couldn’t be fixed and there was no going back. Plus just when I think I like Nash even though I’m a Tod girl, he goes and does something that makes me wanna hit him over the heard. I get he was hurting and I get he’d been betrayed, but get over it! I disliked how he acted and I disliked that he fell back into his weakness. I love Sabine too even though we didn’t see much of her in this book and I’m not quite sure she’ll even be enough to heal him. Guess only time will tell.

Fantastic book in the series and if you've liked any of the books in this series, you'll love this one. And....if you haven't read it, then I seriously recommend picking up the first book--you won't regret it!

  1. Awesome review. This was my absolute favourite of the series because Tod is so . . . THE MAN. haha. I used to be Team Nash until what he did to Kaylee but now I'm totally Team Tod 4ever.

  2. I SOOOO agree! I've always loved Tod, but I think I fell in love with him when he sucker punched Nash that time. Won my heart then and there he did!
LOL! I'm so on that team! I liked Nash, but never liked him. There was always something that held me back from really loving him....

  3. Totally agree with you. It's the best - my all time favorite of all the books/series I've read. And yes, this tops Twilight :-).... I'm frantically hoping to hear when/if the next book comes out.
