Review:

All Fall Down by bestselling author Ally Carter is the first novel in her new Embassy Row series and is a well written and highly mysterious story.

Grace is an Army brat and the granddaughter an American Ambassador. Grace’s life has been nothing but move after move and summers spent at the Embassy where her grandfather lives. At least it was, until Grace’s mother was murdered three years before in front of Grace’s very eyes and her life began to unravel. With everyone around her certain her mother’s death was an accident, no one will accept that Grace saw her mother’s killer in the act. Grace has spent years trying to convince everyone she is not crazy and refuses to give up protesting the truth, but when she’s forced to move in with her grandfather on Embassy Row, Grace begins to discover that the truth about her mother’s death may be more horrific than she first thought…..

All Fall Down is a bit of a mixed bucket for me. Though this is the first novel by Ally Carter that I have read, I am well aware of her prestige amongst the YA world and how well loved she is for her Gallagher Girls and Heist Society series, but I have to say....I’m a little bit underwhelmed by this novel. All Fall Down is in no way a bad book and is completely deserving of all three stars that I’m rating it, however it lacked the draw and power I was hoping for heading into the novel.

Carter’s writing is solid throughout this novel and I appreciate her desire to explore the different countries and governments brought together on Embassy Row; so nicknamed this for all the different embassies situated on the same street by the numerous teenagers who call Embassy Row home. The premise of this novel seemed quite promising, but I felt the novel progressed too slowly for my tastes and I felt as though we didn’t accomplish much by the end of the story. Personally I could have liked a faster pace and more excitement, but at the same time this doesn’t diminish the discoveries our main character makes and the shocking revelation she discovers at the end.

Grace was a satisfying main character to follow and I liked her tenacity. Grace has a reputation as a trouble maker and a risk taker; something she has been all her life, even prior to her mother’s passing. I enjoyed Grace’s strength and desire to uncover the truth in this novel and liked that Carter gave her some vulnerabilities as well. Grace has been slightly unstable since her mother’s death, with all those around her believing her to be, pardon the phrase, crazy, and I appreciated that this was explored.

The other characters in the novel were likable and I partially loved the Embassy children, Noah, Rosie and Megan that Grace bonded with. The hint of a potential romance with Russian Alexi was promising, but wasn’t very strong; something I would have loved to have seen more of, being a hopeless romantic and all. I’m honestly not sure where Carter will go with their relationship, but considering their dynamic I’m excited to see regardless.

As far as first novels go, All Fall Down sets the stage well. While it didn’t blow me away per say, I did quite enjoy it and would be very interested in picking up the next book to see what happens next and to see if any of Grace’s mothers secrets are revealed!

From Red.....

The tower room had an iron gate, like something out of a horror movie. It was open at the moment, but I could see the impressive locks even from here.

I wondered what could possibly need to be contained that carefully. Besides me. A tiny shiver danced over the back of my neck as I peered inside.

Spears with decorative beaded bands, arrows, and swords, were all lined up with military, rather than museum, precision. And a lot of stuffed animal heads. There was a stag with chunks of turquoise stones for eyes, a crane standing on a log, a white bull with gold horns, and a horse head with a horn attached to its forehead to make it look like a unicorn.

Rich people were weird.

I was stepping inside when a hand closed tightly around my arm, jerking me to a stop. I shouted something that was definitely not ladylike enough for this house. My pulse thumped in my ears.

“You shouldn’t be in here,” the person said.

He flexed his hands suddenly, the way people do when they’ve touched something too hot. He wore a silver ring on his thumb. I tried to concentrate on that instead of the spark of panic smoldering in my belly. Burning down a private museum seemed like a really bad introduction to my new life.

Had he seen the tiny spark that ate a hole in my sleeve? I rubbed it, making sure it wouldn’t flare up again. I wasn’t even sure if it was a new spark or a burn from an old one.

I’d learned I didn’t need kindling—, I was kindling.

My palms itched painfully. I shoved the guy to distract him from the heat coming off of me.

“Who the hell are you?”

“Ethan,” he replied.

Ethan Blackwood. Of course. Way to make a first impression.

“You must be Abby’s granddaughter.” He was standing very close. And I’d just known he’d be
gorgeous. I assumed he’d have better manners, though. Possibly no one else noticed with that
ridiculously beautiful face. His hair was blond, his cheekbones deadly. He was lean and muscular, like someone who knew exactly what his body was capable of. And I was thinking way too much about this.

“Get out of here,” he said softly, intently. His mouth was distracting; it belonged to a villain in a
movie full of secrets and temptation. “Now.”

I was suddenly embarrassed, as if he could read my mind. A little more aggressive misdirection
couldn’t hurt. “Have you considered taking up yoga?” I asked with patently false sweetness. “You’re a little tense.”

“Just go,” he said. “You—”

“Ethan!” Holden Blackwood interrupted us, sounding shocked and annoyed. “Leave the poor girl alone.”

A muscle leapt in Ethan’s jaw as he clenched it. He didn’t look at his father, just kept staring at me. “Ethan!” Holden repeated, annoyance hardening to anger.

Ethan shoved past me so suddenly I toppled into the door frame. I heard his footsteps stomp
down the hall and then the slamming of his bedroom door. “I apologize for my son.” Holden sighed. “I fear I’ve spoiled him.”

Yeah, I couldn’t exactly picture Ethan with an after-school job. Speaking of which, I was going to have to get one as soon as possible. Abby wasn’t the type to give out an allowance, even if she’d been able to afford it. I shrugged awkwardly at Ethan’s dad. “It’s fine.”

“It certainly is not, but it’s gracious of you to say so.” I couldn’t think of a person more opposite to Abby than Holden Blackwood. Or more opposite to my dad, come to think of it. He screamed sophistication and wealth. The Alcotts just screamed. “Perhaps you’ll do him good, Kia.”

I nearly snorted. He smiled briefly. “Sorry,” I said, motioning to the trophy room before I opened my big mouth and told him I didn’t do miracles and his brat of a son was beyond my help.

Review:

Red is Alyxandra Harvey’s latest release and is an unassuming story full of intrigue, passion and the paranormal and will ensnare you from beginning to end with its kick-ass heroine, sweeping romance and mythical creatures.

I feel it's important to express that I am wholeheartedly an Alyxandra Harvey fan. With Red, I’ve now read all of her published work and consider her simple, albeit entertaining writing and solid characterization not to be missed. I’ve never read a novel by her I haven’t liked and Red is no exception, though the ending left me a little dissatisfied.

I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting heading into Red, but as beautiful as it is, the cover and the description really don’t do the book justice. Red is told through the dual eyes of seventeen year old Kia Alcott, who has the ability to start fire with her mind and whose touch burns deadly and Ethan Blackwood, a privileged young man whose family has a history of hunting and capturing the most shocking of creatures.

After an accident at her school saw Kia’s best friend injured and her expelled, Kia is sent to live with her estranged grandmother at the country estate where she works and lives, the Blackwood family home. Set amongst a forest backdrop, Kia’s new home is eerie and mysterious and Kia soon starts to realize the family her grandmother works for is hiding secrets and those secrets are more impossible than Kia could have ever anticipated, even as she slowly realizes that Ethan Blackwood isn’t the cold-hearted individual he so desperately wants people to believe he is……

Red is quite an enjoyable read. I actually wasn’t expecting it to be told through both Kia and Ethan’s POV’s, but was quite glad it was in the end. I enjoyed the aura of mystery Harvey explored in Red and the creatures she wove into her novel. I really liked seeing the different mythical creatures throughout the story and loved that they weren’t the ones you typically see in most supernatural and paranormal tales. Obviously I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but Red often isn’t what you expect.

Harvey introduces her readers to a very fiery heroine—pun intended, with Kia Alcott. Kia is a feisty young thing with guts and tenacity; something I very much enjoyed whilst reading Red. Kia is sharp speaking and has a great internal monologue who has some great chemistry with her love interest Ethan.

As the male lead and the other point of view we follow throughout the story, Ethan surprised me by being personable, entertaining and full of character! He certainly is the mysterious young man Red’s description paints him as, but Harvey managed to give him enough depth and character to make him more than your typical good looking love interest.

Ethan is a part of a larger group in this novel, and I liked some of his friends, particularly Sloane who also befriends Kia, and Colt—he seemed like a pretty cool character. In fact, most of the minor characters seemed to compliment the story well; my only issue with Red at all was it's ending…..

Though I sometimes quite enjoy a well written standalone novel, Red was the kind of novel that would have made a great series. The story had a fun, fresh idea and was wonderfully paced until the end when the novel seemed rushed; leaving me very dissatisfied. I feel like Harvey forced the ending and the story wasn’t tied up nicely. There are so many left over questions I would have liked explained including Kia’s abilities and what will happen to the characters next.

Fast paced and wonderfully written all the way until the final few chapters, Red is highly worth a read and something Alyxandra Harvey fans will not want to miss!

From Bone Dry....

There are times when I listen to the moralistic words of the angel on my right shoulder rather than the wicked whispers of the demon on my left. With Kylie Wilkinson leaning across the cafeteria table, eager to hand over cash I so desperately needed, I couldn’t help but smack the halo off that perfect little angel.

"Two hundred bucks," I said, holding my hand palm up. The eagerness on Kylie’s heart-shaped face fell into a scowl. She tucked a stray strand of glossy hair behind her polka-dotted headband and shifted in her seat.

"You’ve got to be kidding me, Holly."

I pulled back my hand, closed my fingers into a fist and pretended to be interested in my bologna sandwich. That move got them every time. The din of cafeteria chatter rose up around us as we sat in silence. Girls laughed, plates clattered and sneakers squeaked. Five seconds passed before Kylie cleared her throat.

"Okay, wait." She reached into her Eddie Bauer backpack and pulled out her wallet.

I kept my attention on my sandwich, nibbling away while she anxiously counted the cash. She had exactly four fifties which made me think she already knew what I charged and had been playing me to see if I’d go lower.

A guy walking by our table stopped to watch the transaction. I turned to raise my eyebrows at the tall, thin figure towering over us. Nathan Whitman, Kylie’s ex-boyfriend. He flashed a grin at me, his dark, wavy hair curling on his forehead, his high cheekbones carving a V on his otherwise boyish face. I smiled around my sandwich and hoped I didn’t have bits of meat stuck between my teeth.

"Is our friendly, neighborhood ghostbuster in action again?"
I’d taken a case for Nathan last year. He’d thought he was being haunted—they all did. Before that day, I’d considered Nathan just another bland guy navigating the Seaport High popular crowd. A preppy sailor only interested in country clubs and stock points. But after seeing the stacks of comic books in his room, I decided there might be an interesting guy hiding behind the polo shirts.

Not that I’d ever had the time to find out.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer is the thrilling sequel to Michelle Hodkin’s smash hit The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and is a worthy follow up that sees readers discover more mystery and even more uncertainty as our heroine Mara sets out to discover why she can do what she can do, even while she is continually haunted by ghosts of her past that aren’t quite dead.

Hodkin’s debut absolutely blew me away with its mystery, suspense and attention to detail and although it’s taken me some time to continue on with the series I was pleasantly captivated once more with this thoughtful novel that is full of intrigue and unanswered questions.

During the first novel, we as the reader spent the majority of the story questioning our heroine Mara’s sanity right alongside her as she navigated the strange goings on of her life. The unexplained and unexplainable occurrences warred with what was impossible and improbable to open our eyes to what Mara can do, even if we’re yet to know why.

In The Evolution of Mara Dyer, Mara is back…. with her boyfriend Noah Shaw alongside her yet again as the two set out to discover more about their mysterious abilities; something hindered by Mara’s old boyfriend Jude who is back from the dead and determined to make Mara’s life a living nightmare. Through a number of creepy events and occurrences Jude makes it clear he will stop at nothing to destroy Mara, even going so far as to help make Mara’s family question her sanity and mental stability. With Mara’s life spinning out of control, she finds herself placed in a mental health program that is tasked with helping those with mental illnesses get better, only New Horizons isn’t what it appears and as the novel progresses it becomes more and more clear that something sinister is going on…..

My mind is honestly still all over the place with this novel….even though I’ve finished it. Though I definitely loved it, I found myself with even more unanswered questions at the end than I had when heading into the story. Michelle Hodkin is masterfully weaving this story together; twisting certain elements together and hinting at a bigger picture to explain what is going on. Mara and Noah are being put through the wringer time and time again, and I’m right there alongside them as Hodkin tells their mysterious story.

I honestly have no idea where Michelle Hodkin is going with this story, but I’m certainly enjoying what I’m reading. Mara is a genuinely likable heroine, despite all of her issues. Or perhaps even because of them; I like that she’s fighting where she can, and her small acts of defiance impress me as we see her story unfold.

I’m quite happy with the romance within the story. It is not over powering and instead compliments the mystique and mystery of the story. Mara and Noah have a great chemistry and I love the way they react to each other; it’s impossible not to be swept up into their relationship when they are front and center. They seem to bring out the best of each other and I love the dedication Noah has towards Mara.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer continues to develop the storyline within this series. More questions are raised and Hodkin twists details together to create an even bigger picture of what is going on. The Evolution of Mara Dyer concludes on a shocking cliffhanger and left me as the reader ready to dive into the next novel as soon as I can!

I change the subject quickly. “Thank you for doing this with me. I appreciate the company.”

“I’m at your beck and call. Where are we off to?”

“Can we please go down to the Municipal Pier first and see if we can find my friend?”

“You do know, I’m gonna go all Jackie Chan on anybody who steps out of line, right? By the way, you still haven’t told me what we’re doing with a cooler bag of food and whatever you’ve got in that bag of yours I noticed in the backseat.”

“Promise me you’ll accept what I want to do, just like Retro did.”

“Okay. I promise to hear you out, and then I will be prepared for my Jackie Chan moment because I know, if you’re keeping it from Harley and so is Retro by getting me involved, then you shouldn’t be doing this by yourself.”
