Review:

Every Word is the sequel to Ellie Marney’s sensational debut Every Breath and is as easily as good as the first! With its rich setting and personable characters, Every Word will easily captivate with its thrilling storyline and the electric chemistry shared by its main characters.

I have to say, this is good Australian fiction, plain and simple. Admittedly I don’t read a lot of it, probably less than I should as a proud Australian, but even I can recognize well written and well told Aussie fiction. Set in the urban setting of Melbourne, Every Word continues to follow Australian teenager Rachel Watt’s and her best friend/neighbor turned boyfriend James Mycroft and sees the two teens jet off to London to help solve yet another mysterious murder.

I truly found myself falling in love with Rachel and Mycroft in the first book and I only love them together so much more after reading the second. Perhaps it’s because I haven’t read a lot of books like this, but I really appreciate the freshness and uniqueness Marney has brought to the page with her characters and storylines. It may seem far fetched—two teens so easily inserting themselves into different murder investigations, but the authenticity of the characters means this is never an issue. At least not for me; I just loved seeing two intelligent and focused Aussie teens doing what they do best.

Whilst the first book was set entirely in Melbourne, Every Word takes readers on a different kind of adventure with Marney taking her readers into the heart of London when Mycroft races off to assist in a murder investigation in his home country and Rachel soon follows. The setting of Every Word brings some authentic English culture and life to the story when our teens experience some every day London life whilst assisting in the investigating.

Rachel and Mycroft really are fantastic characters to read about. And don’t even get me started on the sexual tension that runs rampant between them! Rachel is a typical Australian teen; natural and normal, but she’s also very intelligent and daring, something that makes her the perfect match for Mycroft.

James Mycroft is one of those characters who are incomparable to anyone else. The way he thinks, acts and questions things is uniquely his own and I honestly think there isn’t a character out there like him. Being British and extremely quick thinking and intelligent, the likeliness between Mycroft and the infamous Sherlock Holmes is something Ellie Marney plays with well, and yet she still manages to give him his own distinct personality. Mycroft is a very haunted individual and has a difficult time letting people in, something he and Rachel struggle with throughout the series but he is making process with.

Mycroft and Rachel are, at their base, best friends. Theirs is a relationship built on an extremely strong foundation of friendship that steadily progressed over time into a romantic relationship. The thing I really love about them is that they’re actually really awkward with each other at times, but I can’t help but feel like this only enhances the natural chemistry they share. I adore their romantic interactions and seeing their physical relationship develop. These two are really fun to read about and I very much enjoy seeing their romance continue to blossom. I hope Marney continues to allow them to grow and keeps them strong together.

Overall, Every Word is a superb follow-up to Ellie Marney’s debut and Marney delivers yet another brilliant instalment. This chapter of the series ends wonderfully, but I’m still geared up for the third and final book Every Move!

Review:

(Warning: Contains some spoilers from this book and potentially book one, The Beautiful and the Cursed!)

The Lovely and the Lost is the rich and startling follow up to Page Mogan’s sensational debut The Beautiful and the Cursed, and is as good, if not better than it’s predecessor!

Darkly gothic and magical, The Lovely and the Lost was a superb sequel to an unexpectedly brilliant debut and I just adored it. Having read the first novel, The Beautiful and the Cursed with next to no real expectations, I honestly think this series is an absolute gem…and so underrated! Page Morgan transports her readers to such a compelling world in her stories and so eloquently depicts a dark world where those of proper society are woven together with all kinds of different creatures that go bump in the night.

Perfectly written and incredibly paced, The Lovely and the Lost is wonderfully detailed as Morgan continues to develop her overall storyline, whilst still allowing The Lovely and the Lost to have its own singular storyline. Book two in the series continues to focus around sisters Ingrid and Gabby and is told through their POV’s as well as that of some of the many electric characters Morgan has introduced during the first two books. Seeing through the eyes of so many characters, including Ingrid, Gabby, Luc, Vander and Grayson amongst others only manages to enhance the reading experience and give you a very well rounded view of the world and the goings on in the story.

I’m so in love with so many characters in this series that I almost have no words. Almost. The characters Page Morgan has written into this series are amazing to read about. Honestly, I don’t have a bad word to say about any of them and I adore the way they relate to one another. They all have such different relationships; from the romances Morgan explores to the bonds between sisters and brothers, to those that are close confidants and friends—they’re all so magical to read about, and it’s this sensational character dynamic that wins me over time and time again. With the turn of every page I’m falling for these characters and the connections they share. I’m one hundred invested in their individual relationships and have been since the very beginning.

I think Ingrid and Gabby are fantastic leading ladies, although I think Gabby is particularly awesome. The lass has some serious fire and spirit that continually entertains me. Gabby is such a strong young woman and though she may be rash, she means well and has all good intensions. The Lovely and the Lost sees Gabby in a pickle on more than one occasion, especially with some of her actions at the end of the novel that may change things forever.

As always I’m continuing to adore the romances featured in this series. Ingrid continues to grow closer to Vander and though her feelings for him deepen, her heart is still very much with Luc. Personally, I love Vander but see Ingrid and Luc more together; they just can’t seem to fight what they feel, despite the dangers and cautions about them getting involved, but I do foresee Page Morgan continuing to develop Ingrid’s relationship with both amazing young men; something that both excites and irks me!

Gabby and Nolan’s romance never fails to please me. These two have so much fire and electricity together that I read, desperate to stumble across a scene between the two, simply because I know how incredible it will be. Nolan and Gabby bring out the best, and worst, in each other and I love the spark Morgan brings to the story with their relationship. She may be a bit younger than he, but Nolan adores Gabby exactly the way she is, scars and all. Some difficult moments towards the end of the book have me worried for the stability of their relationship and I can only hope that Morgan doesn’t do anything too cruel with my favourite couple!

A surprising development in The Lovely and the Lost for me was the one between Ingrid and Gabby’s brother Grayson and the attraction he feels for Alliance member Chelle. This may have come from nowhere after the last book, but I’m excited over the prospect of a future romance between them. Grayson has some very real inner demons considering he shares hellhound blood but he really tried in this book and I hated that it kept blowing up in his face. After appearing as a minor character in The Beautiful and the Cursed it was interesting seeing him have a more feature role and I look forward to seeing him develop in future books.

There were quite a few unexpected twists in The Lovely and the Lost that will both delight and shock readers. Page Morgan continues to slowly develop her characters, adding new dimensions, and dangers, to her storyline to keep you lost amongst the compelling romance, heart-stopping danger and unending excitement! Stunning story—bring on the next book!

.....From Threats of Sky and Sea....

My ladies nod at me encouragingly, and I kneel beside the princess. “Good day to you, Your Highness,” I say.

“Good day,” Princess Aleta says without moving her eyes from her roses. She examines the roots critically and paws through the fresh dirt with her trowel.

This is a different sort of gardening from my herbs, when simple watering and trimming would do. I tentatively reach my trowel into the dirt and sift through it, careful not to disturb any of the roots.

“It’s a lovely day, isn’t it?” Wonderful way to make friends, Bree. Comment on the weather.

Aleta only trims a few leaves from the bushes. 

I lick at the beads of sweat forming on my upper lip, trying not to be obvious about it. It’s so hot here in the capital. I’d been thrilled to get out of the confining walls of the palace after spending the past few days holed up inside but hadn’t thought forward to the sweltering heat. 
“It’s a bit warm. I’m from the north, you know. It’s probably snowing there now. I don’t know how it’s so warm here.” I feel as though I’m chattering on, but no one stops me.

“It’s likely you passed the Makers’ Margin on your trek. It accounts for the barriers in seasons in the realm,” she says shortly.
“Oh. Yes, I guess that must be it.” 

She turns back to her roses, and I rack my mind for something else to say. If I can make a friend out of anyone, it should be the princess. She doesn’t seem like she wants to be under the king’s thumb any more than I do. Though she doesn’t seem particularly eager to be my friend either. 

“I thought that roses were red,” I say, a half-question. The flowers that Da middle-named me for look pale and unassuming without the scarlet color to them.

“These are white,” the princess snaps.

A stab of irritation gouges me. “Yes, I can see that,” I say waspishly. She doesn’t have to be so curt. “I wondered why.”

“And, had you asked, I would have answered you.”

I stake my trowel into the dirt and face her. The princess is carefully toeing the line of rude and polite, slipping ever closer to rude. I don’t need friends like her. “Have I done something to offend you, Your Highness?”

“Your very presence offends me.”

Curses rise to my lips, but I stifle them. I had wanted honesty from someone in the castle, and here I’ve found it in the form of a girl who glares at me, the sun shining into her eyes so brightly that they seem yellow.

“You wonder why there is a lack of red in my rose garden. Look around you. Do you see red blossoms anywhere in the king’s gardens? Have you seen it anywhere in the palace decor in the time that you have been here?”

I open my mouth, but close it again, a fish tossed onto dry land. No, I realize. The flowers in the royal garden had been purple, blue, yellow—but none were red.

The look on my face answers for me. “There are two colors to which specific meanings are assigned by the Egrian king. Violet—all shades of it—are reserved for the royal family. Red roses grow only outside the dungeons. Red means death. Murder. Someone who has taken another life.”

No wonder Lady Kat wears the color so often. She’s boasting. 

Aleta pushes herself to her feet and nods to the attendant behind her, who hurries to her side with the parasol. She’s ready to leave. I scramble to my feet as well, absorbing this new information. In Abeline, colors are just colors. It’s not a custom—or law, whatever it may be—that’s made it that far north. 

“But you must know that, surely,” Aleta says. Her words are an innocent bundle of firewood in a hearth, safe until the wood shifts and the embers still glowing beneath it leap out to burn me. “Your father must don red quite often.”
