Book Shelf: When I'm Gone (Rosemary Beach #11) by Abbi Glines

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.

I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…

Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…

Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?

Review:

When I’m Gone is the 11th instalment in Abbi Glines’s ongoing Rosemary Beach series and is yet another sexy, entertaining and highly enjoyable read that this time follows Mase, Harlow’s brother and sees him finally fall in love.

Even though he is the son of famous rocker and celebrity Kiro Manning, Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred to live a quiet life on his family’s Texas ranch and has always gone out of his way to avoid associations with his father and his half-sister Nannette. Staying at Nan’s place in Rosemary Beach while she’s out of town takes an unexpected turn for Mase when he meets Nan’s housekeeper, twenty-two year old Reese and finds himself extremely interested in the dark haired beauty.

Reese Ellis has known so much unmentionable pain and abuse throughout her life and though she is finally away from her abusers, still struggles with the demons that haunt her. Trusting doesn’t come easy either, but when she meets Mase, Reese finds herself attracted to someone for the first time in a long time and as the sexy cowboy begins to look out for her, Reese can’t deny that Mase is possibly the nicest man she has ever known, and guarding her heart from him might be an absolutely impossibility…..

Though admittedly, When I’m Gone isn’t my favourite Abbi Glines novel, I still enjoyed it immensely. Abbi Glines seems to write a lot of similar tales that follow a similar script, but that doesn’t stop them from being sexy, sweet and very addictive. When I’m Gone was just a downright fun read. I enjoyed the chance to see the characters I’ve previously come to know and love and of course meet new individuals and get to know them too.

Mase and Reese were lovely to follow. Mase was a really down to earth, genuine guy and I have to say I appreciated the earthy, natural feel to this rancher/cowboy. Reese was a delightful blend of innocence and strength. She’d had the worst done to her, and this had taken its toll, but I loved how she’d fought to make a new life for herself.

Together, Mase and Reese made a really sweet couple. Mase’s protective and caring response to Reese was endearing to read about and I loved seeing him be so careful and understanding with her. Reese has a lot of scars and I liked how Glines wrote Mase’s advances to help her overcome her issues; both sexually as well as her learning disabilities. Mase and Reese’s romance built on a great friendship and I enjoyed see this foundation develop.

Light and fun, When I’m Gone details the first of two stories featuring Mase and Reese and leaves me, as always, looking forward to more from Abbi Glines!
