Ember Queen by Laura Sebastian
Releases: February 7th 2020

The thrilling conclusion to the series that began with the instant New York Times bestseller “made for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Sabaa Tahir” (Bustle), Ember Queen is an epic fantasy about a throne cruelly stolen and a girl who must fight to take it back for her people.

Princess Theodosia was a prisoner in her own country for a decade. Renamed the Ash Princess, she endured relentless abuse and ridicule from the Kaiser and his court. But though she wore a crown of ashes, there is fire in Theo’s blood. As the rightful heir to the Astrean crown, it runs in her veins. And if she learned nothing else from her mother, she learned that a Queen never cowers.

Now free, with a misfit army of rebels to back her, Theo must liberate her enslaved people and face a terrifying new enemy: the new Kaiserin. Imbued with a magic no one understands, the Kaiserin is determined to burn down anyone and everything in her way.

The Kaiserin’s strange power is growing stronger, and with Prinz Søren as her hostage, there is more at stake than ever. Theo must learn to embrace her own power if she has any hope of standing against the girl she once called her heart’s sister.

Thoughts:
I've quite enjoyed the Ash Princess trilogy so far as am excited to read the third and final novel. Laura Sebastian left the last novel with a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see how Theo and Prinz Søren's story ends!

Have you read this trilogy?
And what are you waiting on this Wednesday?

The Queen's Assassin by Melissa de la Cruz
Releases on: February 4th 2020
Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Red Queen, this is the first novel in a sweeping YA fantasy-romance duet about a deadly assassin, his mysterious apprentice, and the country they are sworn to protect from #1 NYT bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia's deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he's the Guild's most dangerous member and the Queen's one and only assassin. He's also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow--to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.

Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts--to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she'll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.

When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they're forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they'll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they'll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen's Secret series.

Thoughts:
The Queen's Assassin sounds just like my kind of fantasy. I've enjoyed Melissa de la Cruz's Blue Bloods series and I'm looking forward to seeing her foray into the fantasy genre. Love the sound of this book and hope it lives up to my expectations.

Do you like the sound of The Queen's Assassin?
Will you be adding it to your TBR list?

Add on Goodreads!
Bone Criers have a sacred duty. They alone can keep the dead from preying on the living. But their power to ferry the spirits of the dead into goddess Elara’s Night Heavens or Tyrus’s Underworld comes from sacrifice. The gods demand a promise of dedication. And that promise comes at the cost of the Bone Criers’ one true love.

Ailesse has been prepared since birth to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers, a mysterious famille of women who use strengths drawn from animal bones to ferry dead souls. But first she must complete her rite of passage and kill the boy she’s also destined to love.

Bastien’s father was slain by a Bone Crier and he’s been seeking revenge ever since. Yet when he finally captures one, his vengeance will have to wait. Ailesse’s ritual has begun and now their fates are entwined—in life and in death.

Sabine has never had the stomach for the Bone Criers’ work. But when her best friend Ailesse is taken captive, Sabine will do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means defying their traditions—and their matriarch—to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien. Before they all die.

Thoughts:
Alright, first, lets talk cover. This cover is absolutely STUNNING. So beautiful and pretty; it's the first thing that caught my attention. Then the description cements the fact that I must have this book when it comes out. I think it sounds like something different and I can't wait to read it!

Book Blitz: A Bite at the Cherry by Rita Stradling- Exceprt & Giveaway

I'm excited to be showcasing A Bite at the Cherry by Rita Stradling thanks to Xpresso Book Tours today. I also had the pleasure of reading A Bite at the Cherry thanks to Rita herself and shared my 4 star review yesterday.

A Bite at the Cherry was a very enjoyable novel and I highly recommend it!

Three things about Justin Roberts:
1. He’s a bully.
2. Our relationship is toxic.
3. He’s the only one who knows my secret.

A year ago, I woke in the morgue with a note in my hand telling me that I’m a vampire. I need blood or I’ll start killing people. Lucky for me, Justin has been sneaking into my bedroom and feeding me blood for a year, and the only price I have to pay for it is putting up with his cruel snipes and my unwanted feelings for him.

I just can’t figure out why he keeps coming back.

But all that changes when I’m offered a full-ride scholarship to Justin’s mysterious school, the elite Blackburn Academy, where I might finally learn about vampires. About myself. All I have to do is pass the grueling entrance trials, and the scholarship will be mine. Problem is, Justin doesn’t want me anywhere near his elite school and rich friends. He’s vowed to sabotage me.

Justin may have been feeding me blood for a year, but he doesn’t know who he’s up against.

But, Blackburn Academy is more than it seems. I’ll be facing more than what Justin Roberts alone can dish out.

Will competing in the trials be the new beginning I’m hoping for, or will it end my undead existence?

From A Bite at the Cherry....

When Justin’s hands went to my hips and guided me to straddle his lap, I climbed onto him, sitting on his knees. In this position, my sundress exposed most of my legs, and I situated the light-blue material, so it at least covered my underwear. Just as I thought about how exposed I felt, my dress strap slid over my shoulder, and I didn’t want to pull it up. My breaths came heavier as my gaze slid down to Justin’s lips and then up to his eyes.

The glint of mischief in Justin’s eyes changed into something softer for a moment, but the tender look vanished as quickly as it came.

“I drank from you twice yesterday morning.” Reaching up to his shoulders, I leaned in and whispered, “Am I supposed to bite you again, or is this just a rehearsal?”

“I told you . . .” His eyes blazed into mine and hands slid over the material on my hips, wrapping around my back, “I want to talk to you.”

“Like this?” The last thing I wanted to do was talk. My whole body thrummed to close the distance and press into him. I yearned to taste his mouth for the first time and finally know what his lips felt like.

He nodded. “January, I’m going to ask you — beg you — to turn down the Roberts Foundation Scholarship.”

“Damn it, Justin! You are so manipulative.” The asshole had me panting on his lap, even though I knew better, and just so he could tell me not to accept the scholarship?

I began to crawl away when his hands squeezed on my hips.

“January, please just stay here and talk to me. I’m not trying to piss you off or manipulate you. I’m trying to help you — to protect you from . . .” he made an exasperated sound that was so genuine, I froze and settled back onto his legs.

“Protect me from what? Because from where I’m sitting it really seems like you just don’t want your housekeeper’s granddaughter at your fancy academy, just like you don’t want your friends to know I exist.” When he didn’t answer right away, I asked, “Why do you care if they give the scholarship to me or someone else? What difference does it make to you?”

“It makes a huge difference.”

“Okay.” I drew out the word. “Why?”

Review:

A Bite at the Cherry is Rita Stradling’s latest release and is a thrilling and enjoying vampiric tale woven with mystery and sizzling romantic tension.

A year ago, seventeen year old January Moore’s life changed forever when she woke in a morgue with a note telling her she was now a vampire. Following the instructions in the note, January found her way to Justin Roberts, a fellow teenager who agrees to supply her with blood in exchange for two things; she doesn’t ask questions and they tell no one of their weekly encounters. Now January’s grandmother has just taken a cleaning job on Justin’s side of town and January finds herself in close proximity to the boy she both loathes and can’t get enough of. Offered a scholarship to Justin’s mysterious high school, the elite Blackburn Academy, January soon begins to realise that Justin has his own secrets and they may just be the biggest threat January has experienced in her undead life yet….

I have to say I was quite impressed by A Bite at the Cherry. Though it is a “vampire” novel at it’s base, the elements of mystery and secrecy Rita Stradling weaves around January’s story gives the novel a thrilling and intriguing vibe. I won’t give too much away as part of the story's appeal is that you don’t exactly know what all the secrets are until the final few chapters, but readers will find themselves keen to discover the truth as January navigates her new life living on the Roberts estate.

As our protagonist, I quite liked January. Being a vampire is only a really small part of who she is as a character. As someone with an alcoholic mother, January has not lived a very easy life; she’s done it tough, but she never comes across as someone who feels sorry for herself or who wines about her position. January tends to make the most of things and I enjoyed this spunk about her. She wants a better life for herself and those she loves and she’s more than willing to work hard for it.

Readers will find themselves keen to piece the clues together as Rita Stradling details A Bite at the Cherry. It may come across that January blindly accepts certain circumstances too easily—namely that she’s a vampire---without further investigating too much, but this tends to bring more mystery to the story. It’s easy to get lost in January’s turbulent but sizzling relationship with Justin that is charged with desire on both ends as well as her blossoming friendships with other Blackburn Academy scholarship recipients. Teen drama and supernatural threats weave together effortlessly.

As the final few chapters of A Bite at the Cherry offer some long awaited answers, they also offer more than a few new questions and possibilities. Rita Stradling pulls a rabbit out of the hat with some revelations I wasn’t anticipating and leaves me raring to delve into the heart of Blackburn Academy and the Hawthorn Group alongside January. Bring on the next novel!

Review:

Rogue is the second novel in the Hive series and brings the duology to a close as A.J. Betts brings to life new elements of this unique Australian dystopian.

There’s no going back for Hayley now that she has left the safe confines of the only home she’s ever known. Outside is like nothing she could ever have imagined and since going rogue she finds herself discovering new wonders every day. Yet outside is far from perfect, and for every miracle Hayley finds comes a disappointment as well. Is this outside world any better than where she came from? Or did Hayley make a mistake in leaving? As she searches for a place to belong, Hayley begins to realise that home isn’t always where you thought it was….

As Rogue brings Hayley’s story to a close, I find myself satisfied by the way A.J. Betts has concluded this duology. Picking up where Hive left off, Rogue sees protagonist Hayley discovering a whole new world and as the reader, Rogue is also an eye opener as we finally begin to discover more about the place Hayley comes from and the world that exists outside it.

I personally think Bett’s wrote the history of her fictional world very well. It was exciting discovering the series was set in Australia (gotta love an Australian setting!) and I appreciated seeing how Betts wove today’s current events and pop-culture into this dystopian world set in the future. The backstory was believable as I could imagine how our world could become the place Hayley was now discovering.

Rogue sees Hayley grow in a lot of ways and I liked her strength as she fights to find her place in the world. The naiveté she possesses dissipates throughout the novel but she still retains her wonder and hope to find a home. Her voice is young but clear and she comes across as determined but sweet. Hayley makes new friends and even finds herself a new kind of family as she explores the outside world.

The Hive duology has been a unique and easy to ready dystopian series. A.J. Betts has created a world not too unlike our own and gives it a twist with the vault. I think the beauty of this is that neither world is perfect; both where Hayley originally comes from and the world she discovers once outside. Hayley is hoping to find a place to call home, but throughout Rogue it becomes clear that perhaps the place she came from may have been a kinder place to live. I quite liked the idea that not everything is greener on the other side.

Featuring a satisfying and hopeful ending, Rogue brings to a close a fun and solid duology that will appeal to those who love dystopian but are perhaps looking for something a little bit different.

Review:

A Bad Breed is the third novel in Kat Ross’s Gaslamp Gothic series and is a passionate and whimsical tale of murder, mayhem and magic with a Beauty and the Beast underlay that sweeps readers up into a delectable Victorian world full of adventure.

After a Romanian village suffers a series of brutal attacks, occult investigator Anne Lawrence is sent to investigate the deaths. When Anne soon disappears herself, her mentor Vivienne Cumberland follows her footsteps to the Carpathian mountains in search of her missing ward and to a remote monastery. Tales of Pricolici abound, a creature of folklore more beast than man and as a blizzard traps Vivienne in the monastery, she faces the same fate as those unlucky enough to come across the creature. Is the perpetrator truly the creature of legend or is he something else entirely? Imprisoned in a rotting and decaying castle, Anne finds herself victim of a magical enchantment. Held prisoner by a man whose drive for revenge sees him determined to use her, Anne is determined to escape but as the weeks pass and Anne comes to learn more of her captor, will her heart leave her unable to do what must be done? Or will she find a way to reach a man whose inner beast is set to destroy everything Anne loves?

I’ve always loved Kat Ross’s novels and A Bad Breed is definitely no exception. Having read both her Fourth Element and Fourth Talisman series’, I was somewhat perplexed to see that A Bad Breed was advertised as being a retelling of Beauty and the Beast given the Gaslamp Gothic’s ties to Ross’s ancient Persian tales. And yet I should have known Kat Ross would do the impossible and weave threads of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale into her Victorian era world of necromancers, daeva’s and magic effortlessly.

A Bad Breed unfolds in the third person and follows a number of characters including Vivienne, Alec, Anne and Balthazar. I’m really enjoying following Vivienne and Alec in this series having known them since the beginning when they still went by the names of Tijah and Achaemenes. It feels like being reunited with old friends and I’m finding it highly entertaining seeing how they’ve changed and evolved over their centuries together. They’re very much different individuals than when I knew them in the Fourth Element novels and are more products of their current Victorian times, but at their base and in their essence they’re still the Tijah and Achaemenes I’ve always loved.

A Bad Breed sees a Beauty and the Beast element interwoven into the series in the form of Anne and Gabriel who are prisoner and captor respectively in an old dilapidated castle. Anne’s story of imprisonment takes place over a manner of months and Ross stays true to much of the classic timeline but also adds her own flavour to the story. I liked both Anne and Gabriel; daeva and necromancer together is the kind of forbidden romance that I enjoy seeing. Anne is very capable and worldly while Gabriel tormented and like many Ross heroes layered and complex. Gabriel is portrayed as somewhat of a villain but he has human emotions behind his tortured and tormented role.

This novel is more visually explicit than other Kat Ross novels I have read. Though Nazafareen and Darius were intimate during their relationship, Ross didn’t their sexual exploits with the same depth and description she does with the few shown in A Bad Breed. Younger readers may want to be aware of the sex scenes that are adult in nature, although they definitely serve a purpose and reason within the novel.

Fast paced, well written and very enjoyable reading, A Bad Breed is a luscious and vivid tale that ends too soon for my liking. I love Kat Ross’s storytelling and her characters who are multilayered and intricate personalities and who often blur the line between good and evil. A great read, A Bad Breed can definitely be read as a stand alone but leaves me very keen for more!
