Book Shelf: The Warrior Queen (The Hundredth Queen #4) by Emily R. King

In the final volume of The Hundredth Queen Series, Kalinda will risk everything to save the man she loves.

Kalinda has brought peace to the Tarachand Empire, at least for now. Bhutas no longer need to hide their gifts. The last of the rebels have been banished. And Prince Ashwin is set to take over as rajah.

But for Kalinda, this all came at a great loss. Her childhood home. Her best friend. The love of her life.

Deven is still trapped in the Void, although he is able to find his way to Kalinda each night. He has been lucky so far — mortals are not meant to last in the Void for long, and Deven has lasted longer than most. But when he doesn’t visit her one night, Kalinda knows that his luck has run out.

She will do whatever it takes to save the man she loves, even if it means convincing a god to guide her through the Void. Freeing a mortal from the Void is nearly impossible, but Kalinda has never let those odds stop her before…

Review:

The Warrior Queen by Emily R. King is the fourth and final novel in The Hundredth Queen series and is a commanding and action packed finale to this riveting desert fantasy full of adventure, danger and thrilling romance.

Former Kindred Kalinda has helped bring peace to the Tarachand Empire. The Bhuta’s are no longer forced to hide their abilities and the rebels have been banished. Prince Ashwin sits on the throne as the Empire’s rightful leader with a peaceful and prosperous vision for Tarachand’s future. Only Kalinda’s heart is still broken, for the love of her life remains trapped in the underworld and though his soul visits her through the shadows each night, each day he loses more of himself. Determined to find a way to rescue Deven, Kalinda sets out to convince a god to guide her through the Void. Yet journeying where no mortal is meant to go, Kalinda faces incredible dangers and neither she nor Deven are guaranteed to make it out of the Void alive…..

Emily R. King’s Hundredth Queen series has been a delightfully woven story of action, adventure and forbidden romance mixed with unique mythology and culture. Bringing to a close the series, The Warrior Queen is once again riveting in its storyline, stakes and romance. I’m honestly a big fan of this world that King has created; it’s full of life and addictive; featuring multi-dimensional characters and a forward moving storyline.

I’ve really enjoyed following Kalinda in this series; she’s come such a tremendously long way and I think Emily R. King has detailed her journey wonderfully. She’s experienced loss and pain throughout the whole series but also found so much happiness, friendship and love. Kalinda’s voice has always been strong and determined and I felt King complemented that perfectly in this final instalment where Ashwin and Deven also featured prominently. Seeing things through their eyes allowed for a well-rounded story but also helped us see how far they’d come too; especially Ashwin who was a sheltered boy when we first met him and who has grown into a capable and commanding leader.

Even though this is the final novel, there’s still a lot happening within it and we’re also allowed a glimpse into a whole new branch of the world with the Void. Desolate, brutal and painful, this land was its own kind of torture and hell. King puts her characters to one final test in this series as Kalinda fights for her love and Ashwin fights those what would stand against his new ideas and plans for Tarachand—it makes for exciting reading as the novel progresses.

Emily R. King has created an addictive desert fantasy series with The Hundredth Queen; one I highly recommend and would definitely revisit sometime in the future. I’ve loved following Kalinda and all her friends and will keep an eye out for King in the future to see how she follows up this wonderful debut series!

Waiting on Wednesday #228

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

The Last 8 by Laura Pohl
Releases on: March 5th 2019

A high-stakes survival story about eight teenagers who outlive an alien attack—perfect for fans of The 5th Wave

Clover Martinez has always been a survivor, which is the only reason she isn't among the dead when aliens invade and destroy Earth as she knows it.

When Clover hears an inexplicable radio message, she's shocked to learn there are other survivors—and that they're all at the former Area 51. When she arrives, she's greeted by a band of misfits who call themselves The Last Teenagers on Earth.

Only they aren't the ragtag group of heroes Clover was expecting. The group seems more interested in hiding than fighting back, and Clover starts to wonder if she was better off alone. But then she finds a hidden spaceship, and she doesn't know what to believe…or who to trust.

Thoughts:
I do very much love dystopian/apocalyptic tales featuring alien invasions so I definitely want to read  The Last 8. The description makes me think it's right up my alley and I'll be keeping an eye out for it's release!

What do you think of The Last 8?
Is it something you will want to read?

Book Shelf: True Blue (Paterson Sisters #2) by Sasha Wasley

Love is random. Accidental. You just live your life and then one day it’ll hit you with the right person.

Wandering soul Freya ‘Free’ Paterson has finally come back home. Idealistic and trusting, she’s landed the job of her dreams working on an art project with the local school, but she hadn’t planned on meeting the man of her dreams as well.

With his irresistible Irish accent, Constable Finn Kelly is everything Free wants – genuine, kind . . . and handsome as hell. He’s also everything Free isn’t – stable and dependable. Yet despite the passion simmering between them, he just wants to be friends. What is he trying to hide?

As Free throws herself into the challenges of her new job, fending off the unwelcome advances of a colleague and helping to save her beloved Herne River, Finn won’t stay out of her way, or out of her heart.

But just when she needs him the most, will Finn reveal his true colours?

Review:

True Blue is the second novel in Sasha Walsey’s Paterson Sisters series is another passionate and riveting rural fiction tale brimming with romance and personal development.

Freya “Free” Paterson is known for her wandering heart and her flighty nature, but after all her travelling she has finally returned to her home town of Mount Clair after landing a job working on an art project for the local high school. Working with the kids is easier than Free thought and as she finds herself inspired by their passion and desire to learn, Free begins flourishing in her new job. It also doesn’t hurt that she seems to have met the man of her dreams in Irish expat Constable Finn Kelly. If only he would give into the desire that simmers between them instead of holding her at arm’s length. As Free throws herself into work and the recent redevelopment plans for the local dam, fighting against her feelings for Finn becomes near impossible. Sometimes love finds you where you least expect and when it’s real, overcoming your differences can have the power to make or break your relationship. Will Free convince Finn to take a chance on them? Or will the level headed but kind policeman decide Free’s spirit too much to handle?

After falling in love with Willow and Paterson Downs in the first novel, Dear Banjo, I was so excited to visit the characters once more. Introducing readers to Free Paterson, the younger sister of previous main character Willow, True Blue is perfect for those wanting to get to know Willow’s sister, but can also be easily read as a stand lone novel. Sasha Wasley once again draws readers into a lush country town and fills it with vibrant personalities full of colour and kindness.

As expected, there’s a lot to love within True Blue. Encompassing so much beauty about the Australian outback and Aussie spirit, True Blue is captivating with its poise and integrity. Through Free, Wasley explores important themes including the effects of land development on agriculture and finding ones own version of happiness and mixes them with romance, friendship and humour against a quintessential Australian backdrop.

Free is very much the passionate individual and her way of seeing the world is unlike many others. Though she has travelled abroad quite a bit, Free is still somewhat naive about the nature of man and tends to see the best in things. Her kindness and inability to understand peoples motives gets her in trouble throughout True Blue as does her flighty and harebrained, often forgetful, nature. There are moments whilst reading you will find yourself shaking your head at Free but she honestly is just a good person and she expects everyone to be the same.

In True Blue Free finds a friend and then lover in the form of Finn. Admittedly Finn was less “Irish” than I expected after reading the books description, but I enjoyed the genuine, down to earth individual he was. Free and Finn’s relationship begins with a series of funny misunderstandings that make for a laugh and I especially enjoyed seeing how they ended up “sharing” Max—that made me laugh.

Fun, light but beautifully written and instilled with just enough Australian heritage and heart, True Blue is another authentic tasting rural fiction story and leaves me highly excited to see what Sasha Wasley has up her sleeve where the final Paterson Sister, Beth, is concerned. I have no doubt it will be as bewitching as its predecessors!

Review:

The Pageant by Leigh Walker is is a fun, fast paced and highly enjoyable novel with a wonderful blend of romantic possibility, sass and action that is The Selection meets The Hunger Games....with vampires!

After the most recent world war, control over the world eighteen year old Gwyneth West lives was seized by a mysterious family who rule over their new subjects in the shadows. Rumours of this new Royal Family run rampant in the various settlements that make up the kingdom; they don't sleep, they don't eat, and they don't go out in sunlight. They're also rumoured to be immortal, something Gwyn isn't so sure about. Then a pageant is announced where girls from each settlement will journey to the palace to enter a competition where the winner will receive a marriage proposal from the infamous Dark Prince, Dallas Black. Gwyn dreads the idea of being chosen for the pageant, but also knows that there isn't an option of saying no. Arriving at the palace marks the beginning of a dangerous new journey and as Gwyn begins to discover some startling truths and secrets about the world she lives is, will a vampire fiance be the worst thing she faces? Or are there bigger horrors out there?

From beginning to end, I thoroughly enjoyed The Pageant. Weaving together various elements that make for a wonderful paranormal novel with a dystopian vibe, The Pageant was very The Bachlor-esq in a fun way with many of the interactions and dates between the prince and the contestants filmed and televised for the public to witness as well as various rounds and "cuts" that saw contestants eliminated.

Leigh Walker offers readers only a taste of her world in The Pageant. Hinting at more to come and various secrets about the settlements, I'm quite keen to learn more about the ruling Royal Family and the world heroine Gwyn inhabits. I feel like we haven't discovered enough about the world in The Pageant, instead jumping straight into the competition as Gwyn is whisked off to the palace. I'm hopeful we'll discover more with the next book as I just haven't had enough to leave me satisfied where the back story is concerned.

I'm very much a fan of main character Gwyn so far. We learn quickly that she came from wealth before the settlements were conquered but she's in no was uptight or snobby and instead quite likeable with just enough sass and attitude to keep us on our toes. She's smart enough to keep many of her opinions to herself but is also opinionated and clear in how she sees the world. Something I think will change as she learns more about The Dark Prince.

At its base The Pageant is a love story and Leigh Walker writes this aspect oh so well. The Prince and love interest Dallas is actually very kind while also being mysterious, well spoken and even quite cheeky where Gwyn is concerned. I loved that Dallas and Gwyn quickly become quite comfortable with each other and drop most of the presences. It makes for some spirited and occasionally sweet interactions with their chemistry evident throughout the whole novel. Gwyn doesn't want to fall for Dallas because he is a vampire---something she routinely reminds herself and the reader but ultimately can't deny what her heart is beginning to feel.

Fresh and delectable, The Pageant is such a promising start to the Vampire Royals series and with the novel ending right when things were starting to get even more addictive, I'm eager to dive straight into the next novel as soon as possible! Highly recommended this one!

Review:

Defy the World’s is the second novel in Claudia Gray’s intergalactic Constellation series and is another fast paced, adrenaline packed and romantic novel that will sweep you away into a science fiction world of discovery and love against all cost.

Solider Noemi Vidal has returned to her home planet of Genesis as an outsider, ostracised for her actions in the Liberty War that included refusing to sacrifice the life of Abel who had become a trusted friend and someone Noemi cared about. Now Noemi finds herself lightyears away from Abel and unlikely to ever see him again; struggling to re-assimilate on her planet. Across the galaxy, Abel is captaining his own ship for the first time and learning to balance his mech nature with his newly found soul. When Earth launches a new bio attack on Genesis, Noemi must venture to find assistance, with each step bringing her closer to Abel once again. Time is running out to save the citizens of Genesis but with Mansfield still trying to locate Abel anything they do could have disastrous results. Will Noemi and Abel find each other again? Or will they both be lost before they have the chance?

After the cliffhanger that was the ending of Defy the Stars, Claudia Gray is back with another edge-of-your-seat exhilarating instalment with Defy the World! A wonderful sequel that picks up approximately six months after its processor left off, Defy the World sees readers once again follow Noemi and Abel is this dually told novel that sees them face their next fight—both against their latest enemies and in their fight back to get back to one another.

Personally I really like the world Gray has created. It has all the elements of a great sci-fi I love and blends all the action, romance and character chemistry I would want in this kind of YA novel. Both Noemi and Abel are solid leads who propel the story forward and share a fantastic dynamic. Much of their relationship was established in the first novel as they got to know each other on board the Persephone but it was adorable to see them reunited in this sequel and begin to explore the romance and connection between them.

Even though he is a mech, Abel is so very sweet and human in nature so seeing he and Noemi connect was adorable to witness and something I highly enjoyed. His way of thinking makes for some highly entertaining reading and I just love how loyal Noemi is to her planet and her own idea of morality.

Racing towards a powerful and unexpected ending that once again leaves readers hankering for the next novel, Defy the Worlds is a sensational sequel and leaves me dying to see what Claudia Gray has up her sleave next!

Book Shelf: Mother of the Chosen by Janeal Falor

Adriella always wanted children. Now, she finally has her wish. Overcome with joy, she cannot wait to tell her husband about her pregnancy…until she hears a new prophecy proclaiming that a child will soon be born—one who will destroy the High King.

When a royal decree demands the death of all young children, along with any born over the next two years, Adriella’s life comes unraveled. Instead of the excitement of a new baby, she feels nothing but trepidation at telling her soldier husband. She decides to flee before he can turn her in.

With the High King and his men searching for anyone who defies his edict, she knows there isn’t much of a chance she’ll survive. But in a country full of newly grieving parents, on streets red with the blood of innocents, Adriella will do whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of the law. If she doesn’t, she’ll lose the one thing even more precious to her than her own life—her child.

Review:

Mother of the Chosen is Janel Falor’s latest release and is an adventurous fantasy novel that is brimming with magic and danger.

Adriella has always wanted children and after trying to conceive for so long she finally has her wish; she’s expecting. Excited to share the news of her pregnancy with her husband, Adriella soon learns of a prophecy where a chosen child will destroy the High King. In response, the High King is sending out his guards to kill all pregnant women and young children. Terrified for her unborn child and afraid where her solider husband’s loyalties will lie, Adriella decides to flee before he has the opportunity to turn her in. Yet escaping is far from easy and with the King’s men searching for any pregnant women, Adriella’s chances of survival are slim, but she’ll do whatever she needs to do in order to protect the most important thing in her life; her child.

As someone who has always loved Janel Falor’s work I was very excited to read Mother of the Chosen even if it looked somewhat different that her previous YA novels that focused heavily on a romantic element. In the beginning I found the novel to be somewhat slow before quickly picking up. After this initial slow beginning, I found it to be well paced, with some fabulous magical creatures woven into the story including trolls, fairy’s, orcs, dragons and more.

There was plenty of action and fight sequences as Adriella and those helping her to get into one pickle after another making for exciting reading, but I also had a few concerns with the story. I honestly did enjoy Mother of the Chosen, I don’t want you to think I didn’t but there were some issues I think could have been addressed differently.

To begin with I found it strange that our protagonist Adriella could know her husband so little despite being married for four years and having created a child together. I had a fair idea of where Janeal Falor hoped to take the couple as Adriella’s pregnancy progressed and could envision this lack of familiarity changing. I think the idea of the characters way of life within the story fit with this situation, but to me it was still weird and left me unsettled. This could be more a personal ideal for me (a man and woman knowing each other and caring for one another before making a baby) than an issue with Falor’s storytelling and plot-arc than anything else.

I also wanted to know so much more about the world the characters inhabited. We weren’t given much backstory to set the stage and rather were thrown right in. Adriella and her husband Richart also seemed to come from two different religions featuring the Sun and Moon that I didn’t really understand. I’m hopeful to learn more about this as the series progresses as well as more about some of the characters who assisted Adriella in her escape and the High King that seems to be the driving force behind all the danger threatening Adriella.

Overall I did enjoy this novel and am looking forward to the second novel to see what happens next to Adriella and her baby. I love the idea of a series focusing solely around a mother’s love for her child and considering the cliff-hanger Janeal Falor ended Mother of the Chosen with, I’m looking forward to book two sooner rather than later!

Blog Tour: #1 Lie by T. Gephart

Welcome to the Blog Tour for #1 Lie by T. Gephart thanks to InkslingerPR! Yesterday I had the pleasure of sharing my 4 star review with you guys and today I have some tantalizing teasers to get you intruiged by this brilliant book!
__________________________

Working in Hollywood meant Jessica Dawson was used to lying. As an assistant to one of the biggest agents in town, biting her tongue and spewing out sugarcoated untruths were an almost daily occurrence. But fabricating alternate realities never spilled into her personal life, until three months ago when she told the biggest lie of all.

While her dear gran lay on her deathbed, Jessica mentioned she’d met her soul mate. It had been Gran’s last wish to see all her grandkids settled down before she went to see Jesus. And as the only one still single, Jessica didn’t have the heart to disappoint her.

No one expected Gran to make a miraculous recovery.

Now, Gran was expecting to meet Jessica’s perfect man at her cousin’s wedding, which meant she needed to find a perfect man fast. Hiring a professional was the only solution.

Enter Dave Larsson, younger brother to one of Hollywood’s elite.

Sexy, funny and just as smoldering hot as his super-famous sibling—he had talent and charm to spare. But most importantly, he was affordable and available.

All she needed to do was haul Dave home, have him meet Gran and the family, then shortly after the wedding, “break up” with him.

It was either that, or admit to her #1 Lie.

Only thing she didn’t plan on was the bigger lie she would need to tell herself when it was time to let him go.

T. Gephart is a USA Today and International bestselling author from Melbourne, Australia. With an approach to life that is somewhat unconventional, she prefers to fly by the seat of her pants rather than adhere to some rigid roadmap. Her lack of "plan" has resulted in a rather interesting and eclectic resume, which reads more like the fiction she writes than an actual employment history. She'd tell you all about it, but the statute of limitations hasn't expired yet. But all those crazy twists and turns have led her to a career she loves—writing romantic comedy. When she isn't filling pages with sassy and sexy characters with attitude, she's living her own reality show in the 'burbs of Melbourne with her American husband, two teenage children, and her fur child—Woodley. She loves adventure, to laugh, travel, and strives to live her life to the fullest.

Review:

#1 Lie is the latest installment in T. Gephart's sizzling #1 series and is another tantalizing love story full of chemistry, romance, humor and fun.

Jessica Dawson was used to lying. As the assistant to one of Hollywood's biggest agents, Jess was no stranger to sugarcoating truths and deception, but she certainly never planned to let the untruths spill over into her personal life. Then her beloved grandmother was on her deathbed and Jess mentioned she had finally met her soulmate hoping to bring her gran a final measure of peace.....only for her gran to make a miraculous recovery. Now Jess has to face attending her cousin's wedding and presenting the soulmate in question; too bad Jess made him up. Desperate and dateless, Jess decides to approach Dave Larsson, one of the actors her firm represents, hoping he'll agree to pretend to be her boyfriend just long enough to attend the wedding, convince her family she was actually seeing someone and then "break up" with her shortly after the wedding. Easy right? Wrong. Convincing Dave is just the beginning, but when their supposedly "fake" relationship begins to blur the lines of fiction and reality will the biggest lie of all be the one Jess tells herself to convince her heart she's not falling in love with Dave?

T. Gephart never fails to win me over with this series and #1 Lie is no exception. Perfectly told, #1 Lie is fun, flirty and so addictive to read. Gephart instills all her trademark humor, sass and passion into the story as Larsson brother Dave finally features with a woman who quickly gets under his skin.

As always I found the heroine to be a strong, capable woman who was effortless to follow. Jess was cheeky but kind and I thought it was wonderful seeing her with her big Louisiana family. Obviously Jess finds herself in a bit of a pickle as she must pretend to be in a relationship with Dave, but the way she handles things and her hair brained schemes made for some entertaining reading and certainly brought a smile to my face.

The story and idea within #1 Lie certainly isn't one I haven't heard before but that didn't make for any less enjoyable reading. I adore the Larsson boys and have loved seeing them each find love with #1 Lie full of sizzling sex scenes, passionate moments and witty and funny dialogue.

Having now had the pleasuring of following three Larsson brothers--and Ryan--with  wonderful results, I cannot wait until the youngest brother Nick is front and centre in the final novel #1 Muse and will be eagerly awaiting to get my hands on it as soon as possible to see how T. Gephart plans to conclude this fabulous series!
